Longtime lurker and enjoyer of interactive fiction (made a new account for this post because I felt more comfortable that way). I recently got an idea for a game so I thought I would post here and see if the main concept has some meat to it.

Basically, the game would be set in the regency era type setting complete with balls, dashing dukes, irredeemable (or are they?) rakes and a good old Lady Whistledown knockoff. Very much Bridgerton/Jane Austen inspired.

To be honest, I donā€™t have super sturdy ideas beyond the following basic concept. The MC is a debutante on their first season in the marriage market. Their familyā€™s circumstances make it absolutely urgent that they wed before the end of the season. It would very much be a character drama, though once I develop the idea further, I certainly intend to add a bit stronger of a plot backbone.

I suppose my main concern is historical accuracy. By which I mean that I donā€™t think I really want to be limiting the gender, sexuality and race of the players. I have thought of a potential solution to this.

So basically I would make this a regency meets fantasy sort of thing. So a bunch of fantasy races + magic is thrown into the thing. Instead of the gender dichotomy, there is a ā€œMarkā€ dichotomy wherein you are born either with the Mark of the Gem or the Mark of the Steel and depending on which one, the typical feminine and masculine norms are attached to you. This allows space for typical regency dynamics, without tying players down to playing female.

I have run this exact setup for a TTRPG before so I feel it should work reasonably well enough. But I am pondering whether mayhaps it would be far more resonant to stick to historical accuracy.

In the former case, I am going to be going with my own setting. In the latter, I shall likely go with good old Mayfair.

Regardless, as this little concept of mine is very much in the brainstorming segment, I am very grateful for any thoughts on it that I receive.

Question regarding my WIP Life of a Dinosaur game, would people rather see more popular dinosaurs or less popular dinosaurs because im not sure?

Probably a balance between obscure choices and the mainstays. Also probably shouldnā€™t have too many options to not overwork yourself so more work can be put into making each dinos feel more ā€˜uniqueā€™.

Dinom1315 - omg, my inner child is so stoked for that game. I was absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid, to the point where I had teachers forbid me from doing any more dinosaur specific projects. I think popular or not, so long as the main trends of the different dinosaur types are represented, it wouldnā€™t matter. I might be wrong, but I think you might have slightly more success audience wise by using more well known dinosaurs . . . then again, Iā€™d never heard of Velociraptors before Jurassic Park, and now they are probably one of the better-known ones . . . so Iā€™d recommend doing what feels right for the choice-based story you want to make.

Jules - this reminds me a little of what I am trying to do with my game Sense & Sorcery minus the gender selectability problem. I went with making it female protagonist locked, which probably cost me a ton of audience . . . but you win some and lose some. It sounds like you have an interesting solution to the overall issue, and I think readers would likely enjoy that. Making your own setting also sounds nice - while I went with a vaguely historically accurate alt history version with strange bits of sorcery and magic spread throughout regency England (i.e. fairy mist, demons serving families, towers of sorcery in each county or realm) having it be less locked into Englandā€™s actual history and setting is appealing at times, as one can do a lot more. In one of my future games I definitely want to do my own setting, as I keep running into situations where I can see a lot less limitations, and frankly less study needed. Best luck with your project!

Ill add 4 choices for both carnivores and herbivores instead of 3 to balance out the popular and less popular dinos(2 popular and 2 less popular) the next time i get a chance to start coding again, thx for the help

Thank you! Hereā€™s a link to itā€™s thread if you are interested: Sense & Sorcery (WIP, Working Title, Gender Locked Female) - Hosted Games / Works In Progress - Choice of Games Forum
Ha, sadly it tends to get buried in the forum rather quickly, which is probably why you havenā€™t seen it before. Itā€™s premise is a regency / sword & sorcery mashup, though its fairly pretty similiar to a regency / high fantasy mashup in many ways, especially as a lot of my story crafting comes from my experience with tabletop roleplaying. I think that is wonderful that you had a TTRPG version of your prospective game - Iā€™ve yet to make one for my own, though it has been something Iā€™ve brained stormed for a while, though then Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™d build it around an existent system or make my own. But yeah, hope to play your game someday; I think the regency / speculative fiction cross over subgenres have a lot of potential.
