No idea, I like roleplay characters with a bad past and vengeful against a terrible society so they decide screw the world and care only to themselves. Having a cheesy crying parent relationship and all that is a no buying for me. I am not interested in cheesy lines with family to be honest.
I think it really depends on the type of story you want to tell; I think a reason that trope is so popular is that it enables an author to set a tone and background for the main character quite easily. If you’re playing an orphan character, you kind of already go into the story with some expectations and some assumptions that the player will have some lingering angst and conflict about their dead parents, so it’s useful character-building where you don’t have to do that much.
I think it would definitely be interesting to have parents that aren’t just dead, although I don’t have much of an opinion about whether they should be a part of the main cast – that really depends on what they actually do in the plot.
Authors can always add choices like “we argued with my parents and we don’t see each other again”, as an alternative for just killing. Killing parents is the simplest choice, but I think letting them live and establish some kind of relationship can be more profitable for the MC character and story.
If we talking about personal experience, I’m full of “my parents ded me sad” lol.
My story will revolve around family. I mean you start out with a good relationship with them, but the MC doesn’t have to keep it that way.
I normally don’t kill parents. For instance,in my contest entry your father died and your mother was an addicted person who never really cared for you. You can choose if you are bitter with her or you want to solve it. Or simple not engage any relationship or dialogue with her.
But that is something in the background that is not in the storyline.
It is a personal thing I just don’t like play families in interactive fiction. Except for parent simulator because is very well written and with humour.
Was talking about the same thing, sorry for misunderstanding.
Then I think it could definitely be interesting – I mean there are instances of IF where the parents are very much alive and you do get to determine how MC feels about them: Mind Blind and Conspiracy in Emerson have both parents alive and you get to choose how to feel about them; The Sword of Rhivenia, Forgotten Names, Diaspora and Hollowed Minds all have one parent alive and you get to interact with them, etc etc.
If it’s a story revolving around family, you can definitely include them. I think it’s important to keep in mind the narrative you’re trying to tell - even if others don’t commonly do something, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it in your story. It might be what sets your work apart from the rest, and it’s definitely always interesting to play a story with a new element! For example, in Myrk Mire and Curious Cuisine, you play as an MC with a child in their care, which is definitely super interesting and uncommon!
Don’t be afraid to explore outside of common tropes
Interest check on my first game. A basic rundown on how it’ll go.
It’s the year 2050, a dictatorship has been established in Mexico. The Leader of the Country goes to war with neighboring states; winning the war but setting up a military regime in Mexico which threatens freedom. You play the role of a rebel and it’s your choices which will ultimately dictate the downfall of Mexican Government.
Pancho Villa vs. Patton?
Something like that but even better!
An EZLN vs Gustavo Díaz Ordaz?
Hello Everyone,
I have been suffering from Attention Deficiency Disorder as a kid. One of the things that this allowed me is to create my own fictional world and live it. I lived in this world for 21 years and now that I have started living in reality I simply cannot forget that amazing world I created and wish to share it with the world.
On it’s base level it will be a superhero book but unlike most other books, the said superhero will be a supernatural entity possessing a man and making him powerful. The world would be as grey as the real world with the ultimate message being that no matter what circumstance one finds themselves in, one can always choose how one reacts to it and what actions he or she takes to remedy it.
I know I will probably face a hundred people yelling at me for my language but I do have an idea of the plot and revealing anything more than this would ruin it. There would be realistic romance options of course and I intend on making it as open choice as possible.
Would any of you be interested to play it?
I am interest
I am actively working on a romantic thriller, Crown of Poppies, which will be a free half of a game. The complete game will be a visual novel and ultimately cost money, but that’s a ways away.
The premise is as follows:
You are the personal assistant to your boss, the owner of an elite fashion boutique in New Jersey, called Verducci’s. You also happen to be the assistant store manager of the store. Every year, a fashion week is held in your boss’ home country, and this year is the first year you’ll get to go, along with your best friend, a design intern, your boss’ best friend, and your boss’ best friend’s younger sister, a model.
Of course, the sister dies under mysterious circumstances the first night in Cordia, your boss’ home country. The rest of the game involves you trying to keep your former rival, who is now an investigator with Interpol, off your back, while you try to figure out who actually committed the crime in question. Deep down, you know it has to have been someone from your party: Carmine, your boss, Sergio, his best friend, or your best friend, Millie.
The game will involve elements of all of the following:
Drug abuse, violence, organized crime, murder, and investigation
Throughout the game, there will be a slowly cracking veneer of happiness, a la Stepford Wives.
The text-based version of the game will have two routes: Carmine and Millie.
Does this sound interesting to anyone?
Sounds good to me. Il recommend that while writing the romance scenes, try going for a unique approach. It’s one of the few things that have literally bored me. Every single romance scene is nearly the same. “People go under covers.” The end. Try going for a bit of description there as it otherwise kills the roleplay. Detective Genre is liked by a lot of people but take care that you let people know if they need to sit with notebooks so that they can remember a choice they took. I remember playing the keeper game series and having a bad academic career in game despite taking all choices for studying because I did not note it down when they gave the story text cuz there wasnt any disclaimer to it.
Overall I’m excited to see what you’re gonna bring to that table. All the best and lemme know if I can be of any help in feedback.
Hello all! I’m a new(ish) user of the forum and have been inspired by months of lurking around CoG to attempt a project of my own. I’m not sure how much interest this idea will generate, and am trying to scale my expectations appropriately before I get too ahead of myself. Regardless of initial response I do intend to try and follow through with this, for experience’s sake and satisfaction at the very least.
Blurb
Despite the murky details surrounding your summons, you find yourself once again in the quiet coastal town where you spent summers of your childhood with friend and family. One of your fourth cousins - a fifth, perhaps? - has come into a sudden, unexpected, and substantial sum of cash through inheritance; being fairly trusting of you, they wish your help in settling the matter before you embark together on the Vacation of a Lifetime
. Surprisingly, Oar’s Rest (name is a wip lol) is not at all what you remember, having downgraded from a peaceful beachfront escape to a dying place rife with conflict - large chains are trying to take root and pave the way for modern tourism, while older and lifelong residents refuse to let go of the image of their quiet town which they hold dear.
The story is meant to be character-driven. Its plot revolves around your choices of management of the funds you have at your disposal, whether you choose to try and take full control of the money or leave it all up to your cousin. Despite that focus, this is not a resource management game - your financial decisions will impact your personal decisions and vice versa, entangling both till you find yourself caught up in the affairs of total strangers and end up becoming friends out of sheer exasperation with one another. You might instead choose to estrange yourself from those near you and pursue wealth, fame, or some ultra specific success only you can define. You may otherwise prefer to simply go where the food is, and allow decisions to follow suit.
Do let me know if this sounds the least bit interesting to you. I’ve plenty of planning regarding characters and narrative both done already and am more than excited to get started writing, or even just talking about the project.
Interest check here. I hope I’m doing this right.
Shattered Stars
Find a place to live, seek your path amongst the stars and try your best not to become little more than a derelict starship of shattered dreams in the process! As a captain of a starship among the United Fleets will you find a suitable planet for what remains of human civilization, forge an empire on the broken backs of your enemies or find Earth and reclaim humanity’s cradle?
Shattered Stars is a game that takes place after Earth was abandoned due to a combination of pollution, war and civil unrest. Millenia later, humanity still traverses the stars in large Ark Ships which hold all of human kind’s last hope and salvation. After several dozen clerical errors and faulty navigational calculations, the fleets have lost track of where Earth used to be. Humanity lives in a void where no habitable planets that can sustain human life for more than a century have been found. Alien life, though discovered, is either too radically different from our own biology or too hostile to consider cohabitation with.
In a universe where no planets suitable for humanity have been found and where forces both good and evil are on the move, all you have ever known was a starship’s deck underneath your feet and your hands wrapped around the controls. Since the United Fleet has determined to make you a captain and send you on a suicide mission to find a place to call home while the Fleet’s supplies dwindle the eyes of the universe watch you as an emissary and some perhaps even a prophet to lead your people to the promised lands.
Where will your choices lead you?
• Play as male, female or agender, straight, gay, bisexual or asexual.
• Take up the responsibility of captaining your starship… and maybe add a few more to become an admiral.
• Unlock and discover the mysteries of the universe; seeing what others may have thought imposible before.
• Ally with the aliens, destroy them or even turn on your own species.
• Become a captain and lead your people to salvation or doom.
You have done better than most in their first attempt of doing things. Welcome to the community.
Huh, so many good ideas, godspeed to all of you guys
Thank you. I am currently typing out the wazu. Up to… 34 thousand ish words on the first chapter. I’m excited but Choicescript slows me down significantly.
