I'm Sorry, But I Think We Should See Other People - ROs You Hate

That one in particular is a copypasta.

The “please, for the love of all that is good in this world” is so genuine it floored me when I found it

I adore the HG subreddit. It’s like if this thread and the “ROs you secretly love but everyone else hates” thread got mixed together and was also hilarious. The lovechild of the most bitter threads on the forum but there’s a dislike button.

It’s a good place to air your grievances. At times I simply scream into void and the void responds to my inability to kiss Cauis d’al Cazarosta with sympathy.

This thread would legit not exist if it were so easy. XD

The one asking for “games where ROs can die” is sort of the odd one out. It seemed more like they were asking for games with low/no plot immunity levels even for main characters, rather than games with abusive/uncaring/red flag ROs.

Idk, I’d say the posts asking for older RO and the post asking for himbo ROs are more like outliers, since they don’t ask for angsty or clearly potentially angsty stuff, Red Flag ROs, abuse, general destructive behavior and similar stuff.

And to be fair, if you look at the top 10 posts this week for that particular subreddit, only two to three of them seem to be about requests for angst, Red Flag ROs or destructive behavior in general and similar stuff and one of those seems to be made in jest.

But, still, there’s no question that there’s much more of those kind of posts in that subreddit than in this forum and that that subreddit have much more posts by people openly horny or at least thirsting for particular kinds of ROs, whether problematic or less problematic, maybe even wholesome, ones. As far as I can tell the average age of people in that subreddit(like reddit in general), skews much younger than the average in this, so that probably also plays an important part in making the vibe there so different from the vibe in this forum.

The youngest audience of CoG is definitely on the subreddit, mostly because I don’t think they understand how forums work. Hell, I’m on the older side of gen z and I only know about forums because I was a very curious about the internet as kid, otherwise i would have stayed on mainstream social media and played dragon city for eternity lmao.

It’s also a nice place to get a general idea of how the global fandom feels about certain games, new releases and the like. Most of the time I agree with them. The rest of the time? They talk about Wayhaven and Sword of Rhivenia as if they’re the best books on the planet lmao

I don’t think they talk about SOR like it’s the best game since Tin Star. If anything they talk about it because it’s such a waste of potential.

I have to admit, Sword of Rhivenia could have been way better, especially RO wise cause I don’t remember a single one.

Fallen Hero provides you with: Argent.

I actually see a lot of criticism for Wayhaven on the reddit, primarily concerning the PC. There’s usually two points at which Wayhaven gets brought up there; talking about how bad of a detective the PC is, or talking about how amazing the RO’s are. There’s usual not a lot of in between.

Fallen Hero gets brought up a lot though, to the point where it’s a meme on the reddit.

EDIT: For the record, I don’t think the MC in Wayhaven is a terrible detective, I just think the gruesome mystery portion of the cases don’t get light shone on them because that’s just not the kind of book it is, so a lot of the times the plot moves forward due to revelations and not detective work.

If you mean the younger part of the global fandom, I agree. Not so much for the rest of the fandom though. Certainly not for the 30+ part of it(which I do think is also an important part of the fandom these days), though there a few exceptions like me and a few others from this forum, and I’m not so sure about the 25-30 crowd either.

But I do think that this forum and the sub viewed together give you a quite good feel about how the fandom feels about the different COGs and HGs. Since both the subreddits are less closely linked to the company than this forum and, even more importantly, are less often frequented by writers of COGs and HGs people feel more free about criticizing and making jokes about HGs and COGs they don’t like outside of threads being set aside for that in particular or “acceptable targets”. So you can always be sure that you get people’s honest opininion. It is interesting how the takes there can often be really different from the takes here and I do think that’s quite fun to see.

Sometimes I agree with their opinions and sometimes I don’t. I do often get frustrated by the tendency of large segments of the people there to view more stat-heavy COGs and HGs or where the game aspects otherwise play an important role and that are not about military MCs(or is War of the West) as almost like a thing of the devil and moaning about them being “broken” or "unwinnable or what have you. And I was getting bored by the HG subreddit drowning in Infinity Saga posts for a long time. But I do like that just about no COG or HG series are immune to criticism. Even the most popular ones in the subreddit, like Fallen Hero( which seems much more universally popular in the subreddit than TWC and certainly Sword of Rhivenia) and the Infinity Saga have some detractors who are upfront about not liking them.

It’s got a more laidback and casual atmosphere than this form, both for good and bad. I do sometimes miss the really deep discussions you can get here on the forum, but on the other hand, unlike here, where I usually feel the need to be more perfectionist or at least thorough about what I write, it’s more easy there to write comments that feel more “throw-away”(though not in a mean way) and feeling completely ok with that.

SoR’s first two weeks after release were incredibly hyped by a good portion of the fandom, for some reason. It did die down after it but I still catch people recommending it as a good medieval game (it’s not)

And I do have to apologize for putting Wayhaven and SoR on the same level because as much as I don’t like it, Wayhaven has a great and cohesive writing style, easily being able to situate yourself and other characters at any moment or time, it’s even fun, especially when talking to your department partners.

SoR is such a huge mess…that game is NOT finished to me. Everything is rushed; the writing hurries you along from scene to scene that have no weight and gives you no respite at all to try to process anything thats happening (and that’s maybe for the best, because there is little to nothing going)
The characters are paper thin, the prose is so boring and dull; combining these two it’s obvious why I can’t remember a single name from any of the ROs or what their path involved. The plot is just about the inheritance of the throne and being paranoid about it, which could have worked if the plot wasn’t going at vertiginous speeds and didn’t let your siblings cook up something, either good or bad. The stats are maybe used four times in the whole game despite having a huge, huge amount of them.

And its worst crime? The ending, which is not an ending at all, not a single choice changes the outcome of the people going up into riots
(tbh, unrealistic behavior of the peasants, it would take way more than a few months of mild discontent for the masses to go up in mobs). And barely anything changes from the midpoint of the game to the finish; its such a boring, uninteresting book, unlike other books I’ve talked badly about in here, this is the only one where I genuinely don’t think it could have been good with a different touches.
I believe a total rewrite and reconceptualizing of everything would have to be in order to fix Sword of Rhivenia

Tldr: i rlly dont like sor lol

Nah, the wayhaven mc is a very bad detective, but that’s because the plot demands it, nothing else
Also I didn’t bring up Fallen hero because that game rewrote my brain at 14 and I have never been the same since. I adore fallen hero lol

Something I found pretty interesting is that on the subreddit, people seem to be more… open? When they prefer controversial (for the lack of a better term) ROs.

Even though I’m sure its a meme at this point, people do seem to be more open regarding their preference to toxic/yandere/otherwise problematic characters as ROs.

On the official forums, there seems to almost be a stigma against certain types of ROs, with a large, vocal section asking “why would people even be into them” when discussing characters such as Jun(ko) and Mannerkol, while people who do enjoy them have to start out their statements with an “I acknowledge its fiction”.

Idk, I just find discussions on ROs here vs the subreddit to be pretty interesting. Here it seems to be a point against for a RO to be problematic, while on the subreddit, if they’re not at least a little problematic, they might as well not exist.

SOR, I think, benefited from the widespread (myself included, I admit) desire to have a medieval-ish family drama/political simulation game with lots of ROs and power fantasy (of the “underdog/outcast rises above all others and gets their sweet revenge [or could have gotten their revenge but they don’t because they’re a kind person]” variety) in the CSG library at its release.

All I remember is the commoner piece that your older brother is the world’s biggest SIMP for and she’s all over the MC everytime you see her.

The conversation is interesting, so please allow me to throw in my two cents.
I 100% agree with the sentiment that some people might, for a lack of a better word, sanitize their views on anything when it comes to the forum.

I’m a picky reader, so I haven’t read too many threads, but I saw this happen with wayhaven. For whatever reason, people were really against voicing their negative thoughts on the game at first, before we got a convo started.
I kinda fell into that category as well in the past, but that’s mostly because I didn’t want people to think I made an account just to shit on their birthday party.
Some people are seemingly afraid to admit to xyz for fear of backlash and idk it bothers me, since you should be allowed to voice your opinions (as long as you’re not being a troll for the sake of being a troll.)

Oh and on the subject of problematic ROs: I personally have no issue admitting when I love fucked up characters.
The only reason you might have saw me complain about idk Jun here is because I think he’s not written well lol.
Same for Marnekol. He was just boring. Otherwise I have no problem with characters that don’t fall in the uwu category, if anything I wish I could find one I like.

This forums, for good or for bad, is much more subdued compared to reddit, in my opinion, here you get much more in-depth opinions but on reddit, you get more unbiased opinions, free from the big eco-chambers that tend to form around the forum, with an almost cult of the authors works that admits no sort of criticism, not helped by the fact that you can get your post hidden by the comunnity for very minor things.

That extends to the way people talk about the ROs, its more of a meme to this point (looking at that recent Argent post, for example), but people really do indulge more freely in ROs that are either overlooked or disliked around here for being weirdos or evil.
