I assumed the subreddit was at least partially joking/memeing about the obsession with mean ROs at this point - some truth to it but exaggerated.
(I enjoy a variety of RO attitudes personally, as long as they’re well written and I find them interesting; I don’t think there’s particular stigma on the forum about liking mean ROs but as with any snapshot, it’s worth taking this thread with a pinch of salt as it represents an even smaller section of players than the subreddit does)
I agree. Also I sometimes love making my characters miserable. (Also also I like messed up characters admitting they’re messed up and trying to do better, but.)
I don’t often want messed up LIs to get better. Always a sucker for evil power couples, always enjoyed the idea of being a… well, in russian we call it “a hound of the regime” with a partner that shares your sensibilities in tow.
For me it’s more preferable to be an evil underling that pours himself a coffee after a hard day’s work than the god-emperor of the world. Usually it’s also easier to get yourself a similar-minded person if you aren’t an evil god-emperor.
And that is a rarity, the hounds of the regime in role of LIs. Zhu was an example during Tibet, but after it I rapidly lost interest in him.
From my point of view, it depends on character (and plot). I mean, if everyone is happy in the status quo, there’s obviously no need to change; or if the character changing wouldn’t make sense; but I do like the idea of characters being able to change if they have a reason to.
In LT it felt very weird. A, the man I regularly blast for inability to pull out a stick out of his arse and tendency to lock up the second things get serious, was actually much kinder and attentive to my MC in comparison to N. N just kept pushing, my MC, dense as she is, didn’t get it and generally felt he was acting incredibly weird. Me and her managed to dip out of all opportunities to start romance with N because god damnit, he does not take no for an answer. N kept prodding the romantic tumour in the worst possible moments as well.
Yeah, A is a better option in the LT. N just downright creepy in the LT.
I think one issue is that the game constantly tells you how the MC feels when your MC may not feel that way because the narrative doesn’t really build to it. It’s very discordant. “I can’t concentrate on what I’m doing because N is there and N is so hot and sweet and perfect and I’m drawn to them!” Uh, no, that’s not what’s happening at all. Can we research now, please? Narrative: “No, you will worship N! Don’t you want a relationship now???”
And you’re right about N with the pushing. I swear, if this weren’t Wayhaven, I’d totally expect N to go off the deep end and chain the MC up in a closet to keep them to themselves. Hell, that would be more interesting than this weird UwU crap, at least.
Weird thing is, I remember Mishka describing N as something out of romance novels. I read those quite often and he does feel like he came from one… but mainly from works of Beatrice Small and her copycats. It feels downright weird to see him constantly trying to grab my MC and ask her how she feels, constantly pushing, pushing and pushing.
I expected to string A along until the very end of the series when I started LT, but now I genuinely feel like she’s going to end up with A. A in LT is just a superior experience compared to his solo route.
Yep, didn’t fully understand why the thread got shut down? At first I thought maybe it was because it was too crowded, but it was uh funny how it died only after the negative feedback.
Also noooo I was really looking forward to reading your husband’s takes on that shitshow.
I don’t want to crowd this thread with wayhaven shenanigans, but I will say that both A and N suck in the LT. A because you get the character development they don’t have in their normal route and N since they’re just whiny and creepy with approximately nothing else going on.
I don’t hate any of the wayhaven ros, but the LT did somehow manage to partly change that.
I like the subreddit and occasionally 4chan’s board for text games for their ability to discuss a game unabashed. Felt quite nice to discuss my grievances and complaints without someone trying to convince me the thing that annoys me dearly is authorial intent. It is, I get it! It still pisses me the hell out and I want to discuss the flaws fairly.
I’ve moved the more general discussion about feedback/critique to the Forum Feedback Decorum thread as I think it will be more helpful there rather than getting lost in RO chat
When it’s a nice couple you they’re probably together because the follow the same ideals. When it’s an evil couple you know it’s personal.
Although I also distinctly remember in the pirate game not dating anymore because the pirate lady I was doing well with also wanted to be the pirate king.
This thread has… The Cycle. It goes between Wayhaven, A Mage Reborn (to the point where whenever anyone brings up AMR, someone comes in to remind everyone its not AMR thread), Jun/ko and Golden Rose. You’ll notice whenever one isn’t mentioned for a few days/weeks it pops back up as the focus of discussion.
