Highlands, Deep Waters [Released]

I just finished my first playthrough and WOW! What a great game we have here!

This is the best CoG game that I ever played!

The only trouble I had was the accent of some characters, english isn’t my mother language, but still was amazing.

Congrats fellas!

Best regards from Brazil!

I’m playing for the second time right now, and I’ve just been addicted to the game. Got the detective score of 18 in my first playthrough and just had to try again and find everything I can.
I really like what you guys did. Apart from some bugs, and I think a checkpoint would make things easier too, the game is a 10/10 to me.
Had some trouble with the accents as well, because english is not my main language, but nothing major really.

Great job guys, loved it

Have you updated the game?

If so, can you send a report through the app or towards support@choiceofgames.com ? It’s probably something only they can fix. Someone else told me about that bug and they said the person needs to go through the support.

Just wanted to say, this caught me off guard and I got totally sucked into the experience. Excellent work!

Can you romance characters in the game?

You can have some weird and unexpected sex filled with alcohol and sometimes drugs with people you’ll probably never see again or that won’t survive this whole ordeal.

So it’s basically like any other Friday night.

Wew. That was… That was ingenious. I honestly didn’t put the book down and now I’m sleep deprived but it was worth it in thr end. I finished with a detective score of 19 but I’m not happy with the ending >.> replay number 1 to be done soon.

I have to applaud you two for making a cyoa with such themes and dark events, few people I’ve seen would consider publishing under hosted games that could be considered offensive or “risky” if misconstrued. My hat is off to you both

P.s. I love that there’s a game set in Scotland and with the occasional travel around England.

Okay, this might be a stupid question, but oh well.
First of all; God Damn. That was one hell of a prologue and Iwas shocked when I read “chapter 1” and stared silently at the screen of my phone for God only knows how long I stared at. It was awesome.

So my question… At the end of the prologue, is your character meant to die? Can you avoid their death or is it just unavoidable? Because I played through the prologue, 3 times or so, just to see if there was a way out of it and I wanted to be sure. thank you. And now, I’m going to continue chapter one because I’m curious as hell where all of this will be heading.

No, that is pretty unavoidable. You always play one character for the prologue and another for the rest of the game. The character from the prologue can survive, in a way. When you are in the house at the end of the prologue, it can end in two ways: One is that you find the tunnels under the bathroom and get beaten to death. Another is that you do something in the sitting room that is next to the front door that causes you to ‘live,’ but not in a good way. It is from solving a puzzle using your detective skills, so I won’t spoil it, but you will get two achievements if you are successful, one that says you guessed correctly, and another that says your first investigator ‘survived’ the prologue.

Thank you ^^
I replayed that part, and God. Dying right there was a wiser choice, probably. Who would want to go through that hell?
And I finished the story now and I must say, I played tons of choice of games stories, and this one is so far the best. AND the most frustrating. Because I feel like I made the worst choices and got the worst ending and I feel so empty and sad for the protagonist- argh I killed this possessed baby child thing because, well, it looked like a good choice at the moment but I had a lill “oops, what have I done” moment and everything changed into Hell and all of my contacts, except for Alexander died in the end… Decided to stay at the party to see that fucker dying at the end because I was furious and just wanted to see him dying, but now the protagonist is in jail for the rest of his life. Speaking about bad choices, huh?the only good thing about my playthrougj is the fact that I got the detective score of 18. I would really love to see a sequel on this one…
How many different endings and prologues are there, exactly?
Thank you for giving us this wonderful and messed up experience. I freaking loved it

One question that bugged me from chapter one, though… about the detective mc and an old case of them… what the hell happened at this “farm” :persevere:

I just finished my first playthrough of this game It was really fun, it really exceeded any expectations and was a really memorable read.
I was just wondering though (and this isn’t directly gameplay related just some stuff that’s bugging me a bit). I haven’t read through every single comment here so I dunno if it’s already been questioned/addressed

  1. why did Kevin start dating the owner [I don’t remember her name rn] of Sweet Revenge? Did I read all that correctly? Because what I read was Kevin having insightful things to say about being gay that really resonated with me and then after that he’s suddenly dating a girl? And I’m not sure if this was just my playthrough but I got the chance to flirt with the bartender when my character found out about it.At first I thought maybe Kevin was bi but after all those “he’s gay” background comments and Kevin talking about himself and Matthew it felt very out of place for me. Again, a minor thing though since he wasn’t by any means a super integral character and this doesn’t really have anything to do with the overall plot.

  2. just another small thing. At the start of chapter 1 I picked the “recently divorced” option and then got the option to refer to my MC’s ex as “he” “she” or “none of your business”. I figured this was a way of choosing your sexuality so I picked he for my male MC, but throughout the game kept getting the option to flirt with random girls that didn’t seem like they had anything to do with the plot (random waitresses etc, excluding the bartender). I figured there would be some chance to romance someone since choosing your sexuality was an option, and while I saw (and ignored) several flirt options with non-primary characters I didn’t really see any actual romance? It didn’t really impact the game or bother me too much because I was enjoying the gameplay without it but I was just confused about why it was listed as a thing you can do in-game, as that usually means there’s romance? and if this is just me not playing through the right way and missing something

Sorry if I misunderstood anything! I did really love the game and I’m about to play through it again to see what other endings I can get. Thank you for your hard work

I spent a few hours today reading this game while taking notes in my notebook :joy: I still got a lot of the deductions wrong though so I hope to figure them out… Btw I really appreciated the little moment when Alexander quotes what the first MC first said to him in chapter 1

I really liked my first MC I gotta try to help her survive the prologue the next time I play it…

I’m not sure how many exactly, because we just kept adding them all the time, but there’s an ending where you kill yourself, an ending where you get arrested, an ending where you join up with Alexander and Emilia to keep tracking the rest of the cultists, an ending where you are working for the cultist’s leader, an ending where you join them early in the game, an ending where you become some sort of serial cultist killer, an ending where you get killed by Calum Douglas in the woods, another ending where you kill yourself as the ultimate statement about free will when you realize there’s “someone” dictating your actions, feelings and thoughts… those are the ones I remember from the top of my head.

Thanks! Glad to know you liked it.

It was something I purposefully wanted to left unexplained for the most part. You get references from it across the game, and even a few dreams about it as well, and it’s something that “haunts” your character. so much that he just doesn’t want to think much about it There’s a brief interaction with Father Grant where you can question him about it/learn that he was associated with the people who owned the farm, if I recall correctly, and a few other hints across the game.

They never dated. I don’t remember if Emilia(the owner of the Sweet Revenge) is lesbian only or bisexual, but Kevin is a gay character. What gave you the impression they have dated before? It’s possible we misrepresented something. They are supposed to be very good friends, but that’s just it.

Oh, we normally just let the option to everyone, because it was easier to provide the player with all the possibilities instead of “locking” them into a specific path. Like, instead of just checking if someone is straight, gay, bisexual, genderfluid or whatever, we just let the player pick whatever he feels is the right choice for their character at any given moment. It could be that there was something weird happening in one of those instances, though.

Now, about romance: You can kiss a few people inside the Sweet Revenge, but you can only have sex with Emilia or Kevin, and I think both only happen if you follow a very specific set of choices. There’s no actual “longlasting romance” option, as it indeed was not the focus of the game. We advertised the whole “• Play as a male, female, gay or straight. The Abyssal Ones treat everyone just the same.” both as a joke and because we based or bullet points in the preset provided by the Hosted Games submission form. It might also serve as a nod to people that we try to be inclusive in our representation of different sexual orientations, but

That was Nerull’s original intention with the game: that people played it with a notebook around. I told him it would never happen, but it seems I was wrong. :joy:

I really like this as well. The small nods to previous interactions that the majority of players won’t see or recognize, but that are worth the world to those who do so. At least that’s how I feel about it, as a player.

And good luck trying to make the MC survive! I would guess it’s actually the most probable outcome of most gameplays, and it adds a few new scenes and game changing consequences.

Oh I’m sorry haha I’ll check what it was that made me think that. I wasn’t 100% sure, I probably just made a mistake  I’ll check it at some point and see why I thought they were dating

I definitely did this and I was so concentrated on it that I’m pretty sure to all my classmates I really looked like I was super focused on some school work (to clarify I didn’t have anything to do in class so I wasn’t really missing out on anything haha) I had a ton of fun. Most my notes weren’t really that helpful in the end (“?? ? ? that’s the 4th time they’ve mentioned some student does marine science :eyes: suspicious” (I would’ve definitely lost a lot of sanity points if every suspicion I had was shared by the MC)

I saved her! ! I think. Maybe. Unless the cult got to her again.

I definitely loved it when I saw that, felt a bit like an easter egg even though it hadn’t been that long!

What sort of specific set of choices would you need to follow 0: I think I figured Emilia out but no clue about Kevin. (Now that I think about it a good start would probably be to not, you know, total his car. whoops!)

Hey!

Could you elaborate? How do I can have sex with Emilia?

I’m confused about some of the missing people.
1.What is the story behind Logan? I know you can talk about him through vague details by Calum in the first part but what is the relevance?
2. Is there a part where you discover one of bodies of Ewan’s victims? Elizabeth or Cassandra?
