Highlands, Deep Waters [Released]

Probably the best Hosted Game from this year and I´d say best game in HG and CoG of this year. I definetely hope you can make more of the detective games like this. 10/10

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

He doesn’t need to die. You can even control him again if he survives.

Was your buddy August, the criminal? Did he invite you to come to a farm? If so, what happened?

How do I do that? :open_mouth:

Also no the buddy was called lorenzo I think. He was the international drug dealer but it was a meeting on a farm. I couldnt go to the meeting though.

It’s August Lorenzo if I recall correctly.

The option never appeared or you couldn’t click on it? If I recall correctly there are a maximum number of actions you can take until the day of the ritual (Like 3 per day and then you need to rest), but you should be able to go to the farm at some point at least.

I don’t remember! :joy: Let me check on the code and I’ll edit this post.

Edit: You can survive if you drink from the correct bottle in the tea room(the third one) or if you don’t try to leave the house beforehand. I think your character always survives the fight against the hooded man with the hammer, but goes missing regardless. Then after Chapter 1 ends you have an interlude with him with will define what happens to him during the rest of the game.

This is really cool! I’l try ithat.

Ok well yeah thats him. The option was there and when I clicked on it it led to a discussion with him where he proposed blackmailing them and we could agree with that, ask to kill them all or ask to take them prisoners. When I told him we would kill them all he told me to meet at the farm as soon as possible but I never saw any options to go there but I could still cal’ him and repeat the scene at the cost of an action

:star_struck: This is the most thrilling game I’ve ever played/read! :star_struck:
I aced it all the way until at last in the Domnhaim/whateverit’scalled ritual location I died :face_with_head_bandage:

Really awesome work there @MahatmaDagon and @Nerull ! You guys are awesome!

P.S. = To play game smoothly and efficiently one should use the google translate to understand Gaelic (I did it as I dont understand wtf was all that gibberish :stuck_out_tongue: ) it adds a lot more flavor to it that way…

I got up to the… Church I think, but died. I don’t really want to spend another 2 hours retracing my steps, and the files are confusing so I can’t metagame, so I’ll probably wait for a “general how to get main hints and not die” walkthrough before going back, but it was very engaging.

Potential continuity error: after dealing with Ewan Black, I had the opportunity to send an email to Cassandra, even though I had never heard of Cassandra before. Also, how do you actually meet Cassandra?

Wow. Just… wow. The game is amazing! One of the best games I played here.
But I don’t know if it’s a bug, but

  • I did send evidence about Cassandra to the police and press, but when I was interrogated at the end, the policeman told me that I didn’t share any.

  • I kinda wish that there was an opportunity to lie IF you drink this shitty cocktail from blood of the f*ckers. I said that yes, I will kill Alexander but damn, I was bluffing! Aaaaaand after that I kinda didn’t have a choice at all. Did I miss something?

All in all, I really enjoyed playing, thank you!

I’ll be testing those personally and send a fix to Hosted Games by Monday. Thanks for the report!

Thank you! Glad you liked it.

To be honest I really think the game should have checkpoints or at least save states like it had during beta testing at dashingDon. I’ll try to contact Hosted Games to see if that’s possible. If it isn’t I’ll try to make a walkthrough for it.

I was about to say that Ewan’s notebook has information on his victims, but you’re correct, there is nothing checking if you met Cassandra beforehand on that specific interaction. I’ll fix it, thanks for the report.

You don’t actually meet her until a brief scene on the Seannloch while waiting for the day of the ritual. You can just hear people talking about her at the Sweet Revenge and the College.

Thanks!

Noted. I’ll check the files, but it’s probably something we ended up overlooking.

At the moment only the first character can betray the cultists if he ends up joining them. Our in lore explanation for that once you go through the Sublimation, it messes up your mind hard and you’re “connected” to Them. It takes years for you to recover from it.

I’m really enjoying the game, it’s a good combination of detective work and Lovecraft. However, I have the same issues raised earlier by @maetropa. I was killed by the priest below the church, and I don’t look forward to the prospect of making my way through the rest of the game again. If there was a save and/or checkpoint system (Such as in the Infinity series, Tin Star, Lords of Aswick), I think that it would really improve the game, if only because there are some places where things can go really bad for your character.

Love this game and concept so much! It’s fantastic, but the only thing I want to mention is that I agree with @Jukka_Sarasti and @maetropa, my character died really far into the story, and of course I wanted to restart, but I was literally 2 hours into the game. I think a checkpoint(s) would be nice, if it could be implemented.

Thanks for the feedback!

I just finished doing the manual checkpoints for every major death and sent the updated files to Hosted Games. I’ll edit this post when the game is updated with them.

Hello there,

Thank you so much for your feedback! Indeed, we tried to impersonate a Scottish accent in certain characters - especially the ones who lived in Invernock all their lives and/or older folks. I think @MahatmaDagon and I achieved that with varying degrees of success - and I do believe that we screwed it up in some occasions.

Any particular character you think could be better designed in terms of accent representation? And are there any characters that in your opinion had their accents well done?

Cheers, mate!

Oh man, the woman who lived near Mayberry Walk - now her accent was harder to decipher than some of the puzzles in this game.

I finished with a score of 16 - I imagine that’s out of 20…? I don’t know how much I missed because of failures in the deductions or if there was more to discover. Probably both, but I tried to exhaust as many of my options as I could before the ritual.

I don’t know if I understood the Buddy system or not. Is it limited to the choice you make of the occultist vs the police officer vs the drug dealer? Or is it related to the people you actually interact with in the town?

Also, are there full romance options in the game? I think I made out with Ray in the Sweet Revenge, but then he didn’t get mentioned again in the entire game. Not sure if I just missed all the options for it or if the game just doesn’t have a lot in that department.

And thanks for the Midnight Child. That really fucked me up. Especially walking in on it under the church. Yikes.

Really enjoyed playing this! It’s a great tribute to the Lovecraftian genre.

My first attempt ended messily, with my character being murdered by a crossbow-wielding cultist in the church . Looking forward to wreaking a terrible revenge on him later in the week. :slightly_smiling_face:

Does buying books and furniture do anything, or is it purely cosmetic?

The blood splatter book didnt help me much but the furnitures I bought turned out usefull. Its pretty much one of the only opportunity you have to use cash anyway.

It gives you more material to read. You should be able to get to them via the stats page I think. (I really liked being able to look at the extra books and documents you pick up  )

So I wrote up my solutions to the deductions (and a couple of the fights)… according to the achievements this should be all correct.

Prologue

Joanne’s attacker probably got stained with her blood.
Gordon probably did not stab Joanne.

At the Macleod house:

The position of the body is wrong. Someone else moved the body before the police arrived.

Inspect the keyhole.

Enter the kitchen, check the fridge, check the other note.

Go upstairs, walk corridor, go left, check table.

At the Lone Manse, drink from the middle bottle.

William:
investigate everything. Ask if William is right or left handed.
Solution:
William fought the killer before dying.
The killer escaped by stealing William’s keys.
Someone else made the occult symbol.

Dr. Carter Rutherford lives in Stonehaven.

Lone Manse deduction:
An object thrown from the inside.
There was a fight.
It was a mock ritual.
College students conducted the ritual.

10 Dawning Street:
Walk to door left of entrance.
Walk to door across from kitchen.
Check everything.
Walk to door across the kitchen.
Check everything.
I figured something out.
There is someone else inside the house.
Some kind of pornography has been recorded.

Fighting Ewan:
One option: enter quietly, draw your gun, kick the bottle from his hand, sidestep and make him trip.

Chapter 2

Fighting Father Grant:
Throw yourself on the ground.
Dash and tackle him.
Punch him.

Meeting location: 5

Congratulations for releasing the game. It is one game that is so intriguing and outstanding that I was literally lured and trapped into every scene of the game. This game is simply top-notch! Good work and hopefully the other game you are working on called War of the West can be completed soon!
