<3 it’s nice to be back here, posting, crying, thinking about dogs. FOS has been more active on tumblr, so there’s some art and things there if you want to check that out! I have to finish editing the initial post to reflect the changes FOS’s story has gone through, but the re-release will be out on November 3rd! Give me a moment and I’ll pop back in here and talk about some notable changes between versions, but I just wanted to say hello, thank you for sticking with me, glad some of you are still excited!! Wish I could say I was writing the entire time lol

I know this is a huge coincidence but Nov. 4th is when my school is sending me to practice at hospitals!

I’m excited! I tracked you down on Tumblr to find out more about the new demo since I stumbled across the old one. (Thanks for responding!) and now a few days later it’s active here again, too. I loved this story so far and I can’t wait for more.

On another note, I spruced up the initial post (I still need to rewrite things like the summary but i’m just going to keep it like that for now). Again, thank you so much for sticking with me for this long! I know some people actually liked the first demo, and to those people, ur strong and i respect u. But the new one’s coming out, and here are some more notable changes:

  • FOS has always been a story about abuse/trauma, or rather people who have gone through such pain and find purpose and love–so the re-write leans more into that theme, though it still is meant to be more of a light-hearted/comedic story (there actually are some passes where i’ve written FOS to be more dramatic, but it just…didn’t fit, so we’re back to the lighter tone)
  • The addition of an older sibling. Same gender as the MC, mostly for the thematic reasoning (they’re meant to be a mirror of the MC, or more like a shadow looming over them but you get my point here). This also means there’s a less space to define what the MC’s childhood was like, but it’s still vague.
  • More personality options, in dialogue choices and what’s quantifiable. I think the old demo had the MC be kinda snarky, which is still an option, but you can also be…not that
  • Affection points simply define how a character reacts to yours, not the eligibility of romance. You can be rude to Adelaide, she’ll be mad at you, and your romance can proceed with that kind of a dynamic if you prefer
  • A lot of lore and story elements got shifted around; Fey like the MC are more rare, “common” fey are treated more like subclass citizens
  • I know I said I was putting in more appearance options but they’re here, and now you can be a pink fox and no one can stop you
  • more weapon options
  • developing your MC’s magical specialty/element, this is more than a choice. It’s a result of your choices in game, and what your character feels an affinity to–this also means the MC is a lot weaker in the magic department at the beginning of the story
  • Special gifts that you can find as fun side-quests, and get special scenes + influence the story, for fun
  • There’s far more exploration of who your MC is, what they’re feeling, why they’re doing what they’re doing
  • While this still is a story about saving the world, and your MC is inherently a good person, you can be…maybe…not so good…murder someone maybe…live fast die young (overall the MC has more of a story, and motivations of their own)
  • The MC knowing Yoon and Faith before the events of the story, and having met their uncle before as well
  • The MC being a thief by trade, though its your choice if that’s the only job they’ve tried to have (cut to your MC trying to be baker but putting salt instead of sugar)
  • And about the light-hearted fantasy note, I know some people prefer angst and drama and while that is in here, it starts on a lighter note. FOS had been inspired by JRPGs, and specifically the jovial tone they had (I tried to make FOS into an RPG but we don’t talk about that). I can honestly say that when I tried to right it more “dark” it felt wrong. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but!!! maybe sometimes we need a fun story!!!
  • I would add more but I don’t think I ever talked about the story in detail so I’m not even sure how to explain what I changed askjhdkajd all I can say is that I’m a lot happier with it now and I hope you guys will like it too!

Not sure how I feel about this. If we could choose the sex it’d be better, I don’t have a brother (I’m a guy) but I do have a twin sister so…I don’t know, it could work better that way.

Sarcastic for the win. The old MC did seem to already have a set personality so this is a good addition.

Another downgrade. We’re meant to be a magical creature and yet we’re weak in the magic department?

Always glad for some side quests.

Great. It was rather simple before, “we need the money.”

Always good to have a hero that isn’t necessarily a good guy.

Makes sense, to be honest.

I’ve said my piece but your writing is really good and I really like this story regardless of what direction you set it into. I’m looking forward to what you’ve got in store for us.

Aww…shit, I liked mage mc, so no option to be that now.:cry: Now that damned sorceress is going to be even more obnoxious. :unamused:

Pacing would be my concern there, only just becoming a semi-competent mage by the time the credits roll on the epilogue isn’t usually much fun as it tends to mean spending most of the game particularly weak or inept. Heroes’ Rise is the worst offender in this case, but you’ll can also note my concerns in Keeper.

I hope so too, being punished for favouring magic by having to spend most of the game inept isn’t much fun and I blame the original D&D and its “Vancian” magic in at least some part for this imbalance as high level/competent mages tend towards the overpowered, while low level ones could lose fairly easily to a bunch of rats. :unamused:

I’ll have to see this play out in story and hope my favoured element matches with my favoured playstyle. I want to continue to play snarky/sarcastic and I hope that doesn’t lock me out of my preferred element, for example.

As an only child I tend to like fictional siblings, brothers in particular, though there are exceptions there. Being the unfavourite tends to be not so much fun, for example. As would in this case having our brother be the powerful mage while the mc is almost comically inept would be another.
Again I’d need to see this in game to make any sort of judgement on the mc’s new big bro.

̶M̶y̶ ̶w̶i̶f̶e̶ Camille does descend from a powerful line of magic-users, who once ruled their own empire and may or may not have brought about a natural disaster???, so her magical clout seems earned…Not that that makes it any less ‘obnoxious’ or intimidating (or insanely hot in my case), depending on your MC’s pov, ofcourse. :smile_cat:

I also prefer playing a mage/magical MC; it’s my chosen background in most every game. I think the progression may be kind of rewarding to go from fire—>fira—> firga–> melt-the-faces-of-enemies-off-with-a-snap-of-your-fingers, plus it reminds me of a video game where you’re not well versed in something right off the bat. I would hope we have a slight edge over another Fey/person, if we select to use magic as a weapon to acknowledge the path choice, but don’t really mind the growth. The sorting into a class of element based on choice as opposed to selection is also neat, and unexpected (kind of reminds me of ATLA or the Elementalists).

I’m an only child (ergo usually my MCs are too), so the sibling as a foil/mirror is a device that makes me go ‘hmm’. Aside from the practicality of the coding tidbit that was mentioned on Tumblr, I also like that the sibling is gender mirrored/set for story reasons, because I agree that it does help facilitate a more direct comparison of what the MC ‘could’ or ‘should’ have been. I wonder if they are dead…Idk, it sounds like the dynamic could possibly be angsty, so bring on the blood relative. :drop_of_blood:

Basically, the changes seem pretty cool and logical…Going through each would make this post too long with my tendency to ramble, so yeah.

(i wore a lot of pink, “Violent”, & purple as a little boy and dress up as heman often)

Considering I was all for choosing a pink sash in the WIP formerly known as Dragoneer, I would be all in to make have a male fox with pink fur. :joy:

Of course, I can’t think of a color that would make hiding nearly impossible more than pink fur. :sweat_smile:
