BUT I’m not finding writing a puzzle, in which you need to assemble an outfit that meets with the Fairy Godfather’s approval, fun. It’s just not working out for me.
Immediate feedback, and the Fairy Godfather’s snarky responses as you pick each individual part of the outfit, is a lot more fun. And it breaks up the monotony of picking from endless lists I think.
So I suppose I can just tally up an approval score to summarise everything at the end, and have the immediate reactions. It’ll be a lot less puzzle like though.
And I’m working on the list of magic wands, although I might trim that, I’m not sure, since if I don’t let you choose your magic wand, and just default your wand to being appropriate to your flower, that makes the flower choice have more impact. Which is probably better, and has more impact, than the throwaway wand jokes I wrote.
I’ve just to think of something to say about Poppy. Or else Poppy’s getting cut. Yeah Poppy’s probably getting cut. Which is a pity, I like red and black colour scheme. I can’t think of a way to make Poppy fun though.
Then I’m going to have to write up descriptions of each outfit, only I rather suck at writing descriptions.
Poopy is great AND IS POISONOUS DRUG I AM IMAGINING A drug dealer fairy with golden chains and love making people see illusions. LIKE TINA TURNER ACID QUEEN FAIRY
I’m writing the first draft with just one personality. The plan’s to go back over it though and add in possibilities for the others. (First draft is super silly fairy.)
Alas! There’s no one really to deal drugs to (everyone’s already acquired theirs before the party and the game only takes place over a couple of hours). However your ability to be able to analyse potions and drugs and poisons will come in useful.
I should probably add some Poppy powers, if Poppy gets included. I suppose being able to magically calm everyone down will be useful.
I suppose Poppy will also be very useful for the person who twists their ankle.
The Fairy Godmother’s the most powerful person in the room. Really nothing’s too overpowered for them. They do have limitations though, and it’s mostly “will this power serve the plot in any way.”
I’m not sure if people having visions would. It’s certainly an intriguing idea.
Now, visions of the past would be far more fun than having people just speaking to you. But everyone’s version of things contradicting each other and working out who’s telling the truth is part of the game, I guess.
I’ve got a choice of hair colour and skin colour on my list.
BUT it doesn’t particularly matter, and won’t change anything in the game. It’s one of the reasons I dislike eye-colour choices, because they’re generally irrelevant save for if the game wants to give you a colour coordinated gift/outfit. And I’ve already set your colour scheme in a previous choice.
I’ve been imagining the Fairy Godmother with all sorts of rainbow shades of hair and skin. Oh you might look human(ish), or you might have have bright purple hair and green skin. I’m not certain if a choice to pick is even important, or if it’d be better left to the imagination.
And I’m poking at finding ways to set your hair style and/or headgear. Which I suppose is another irrelevant choice, only whether it’s messy or neat or wild or stylish, simple or elaborate, seems to fit with me for what your personality is like, in a way that just colours don’t.
And do I allow for a choice of height? Or just assume you’re one of the shortest in the room? Your height could be relevant for dancing, people judging you, and the one character with a Napoleon complex. And the Godfather likely has something to say if you choose the wrong height.
Hrm.
She most certainly would not approve. While pink is an acceptable colour, that hair’s far too short, there’s too many muscles which people would find intimidating and not reassuring, and that’s certainly far, far too tall for a mere neophyte godmother.
Since this seems story-driven, you can have the Godfather intervene and decree the MC should be a prescribed height …
The eye color and things like that help me connect to the MC, even if not used in the story … but from a writer’s stand-point, my goal would be to use such choices in some flavor text throughout the story. In other words, write the main bits and then once you’ve accomplished your main milestones these extra touches could be added later.
Whatever you do decide, I am sure your story will be grand.
Please have at least an option for average height, we’re supposed to be powerful right? Of course I still have my versatility issues that I’d rather not encounter in my escapism too.
Particularly if we choose to look like a cute guy, women at least get petite as a term of endearment, we guys just get pipsqueak and there’s absolutely nothing positive about that.
Usually it just means your selection is more limited and less likely to be on the rack when shopping. Online shopping is a god-send for those not “average” … tall or short.
That goes even more for guys, I’ve said it before but I’m sick and tired of getting sent to the young teens department by sales-people. At least the last couple of years they don’t actually assume I’m still a teenager anymore, which is a small bit of progress. But I hated the young teens section even back when I was a young teen (and still got sent to the kids department). Really if I were a super-villain scientist I’d develop a device that allows me to adjust people’s heights, particularly since it seems to be the one thing modern medical science will never, ever be able to do (post-puberty).
I can! The Godfather has the power to veto everything, and they’re a tyrant. They’ve a very clear vision of what we should look like, and what height is appropriate for our role.
We’re the most powerful person in the ball room. We’re considered the least powerful Fairy Godmother, and part of the Godfather section is meant to be frustration at her constantly judging you, declaring your choices are ridiculous, and policing how you should look. Never mind that there are a history of tall, majestic fairies, that are terrifying to behold, she wants to keep you small and cute.
Height is a thing in the game with the NPCs.
There’s a male character with a Napoleon complex, who certainly does not appreciate being called cute and adorable, instead of fierce and majestic, just because he’s short.
There’s also a woman, who’s told not to wear heels because she’s far too tall and in them she towers over everyone. She’s judged on her build and thought less feminine because of it.
And there’s another female character that’s tiny and delicate and fragile in appearance, since that’s what Princesses in Fairytales frequently are. Like the Princess and the Pea who was so delicate she was bruised by a pea beneath all those mattresses.
I think I’ll keep height as one of the things you can fight the Godfather on. Adjusting your height on a whim is a very small magic for a Flower Fairy. So she might magic you shorter if you choose to be too tall, you may be able to fix that.
My fairy probably desperately wants to be that? I don’t mind the word cute, but there’s cute as in cute movie star guys or the way it used to be directed at me, cute (and child-like).
Sounds like me, at times when I’m not in the best of moods. [quote=“FairyGodfeather, post:98, topic:20104”]

Oh, yes, please even more than not wearing anything leather that is probably what mine would choose to defy their elders on. Cause, like I said, height discrimination is one of the things I tend not to enjoy in my escapism. In fact most of my characters tend to be towards the taller end of the scale.
I’ve a character that’s meant to be extremely common, and who has a ‘rural accent’, informal speech patterns and likely overuses terms of endearment. Her limited vocabulary and accent is considered an embarrassment, (not by her, she doesn’t care) and leaves people to assume that she’s stupid. (Which she isn’t, she’s clever and emotionally intelligent but not booksmart.)
I am absolutely terrible at typing out accents. I generally hate doing so. I just can’t seem to capture her voice at all.
Anyone have any tips?
Likely I’ll just write out her sections in the bland style of everyone else and mark it as in need of an edit.
