Eh, I’m perfectly happy with 4th place.
Welcome back, @malinryden – great to see you’re still working on this!

And now I remembered that I can reply to several people at once, than you kind forum reminder function!
@Gapaot - Thank you! Yeah, my intention with having choices with details is to add flair in how the character thinks. For example, the comments about how the MC looks are all utilitarian/negative. We get the feeling that they don’t like themselves very much. On the other hand, the comments about the Puppet looks are all very positive. Even though looks technically doesn’t make much of a game difference other than in some descriptive areas, I wanted to try to use them to give character depth. Also, yes, I adore sneaky/clever characters/games. They are very hard to write, but so much fun. Especially when they end up being too clever for their own good…
@Lithophene - Your feelings will end up in the dirt one way or the other, that I can guarantee. There is no win-win situation in this game, no magic path that has a perfect ending.
@RedRoses, @qpinskey, @Lithophene - Yeah, I meant people going to therapy, but it is a confusing sentence and thus should be rewritten. Thank you so much for pointing out things like this, as I said, this has not been beta:d, and english is not my first language, so there are bound to be weird things. Especially since I have to keep track of the coding at the same time. Such a headache!
@Zilla, @Lithophene - I WISH I COULD SHOW YOU GUYS THE FUTURE SCENES BUT THERE’S ONLY THE MAIN PATH WRITTEN YET! Oh god do I want to get to those bits…
@Interestedparty - There will be many paths to pick once the lies starts piling up. After all, the best way to deal with a discovered lie is to make a new one, right? You will have the option to either be the reluctant liar, skirting close to the truth (maybe too close?), or a someone that can change their story at the drop of a hat and not care. It will all depend. Most choices changes things like relationships to characters, your personality traits (arrogance vs anonymity for example), or things i the background. Yes, I am tracking clues here, and if certain people get too many of them, they might start to suspect that something is very, very wrong indeed. No unicorns tho…
@Zilla - I has not planned for a therapy buddies session, but now I feel that I have to fit one in there. It would just be too funny/awkward/heartbreaking.
@Shockbolt - Go deep, and have either enough of a positive rapport with Argent from earlier choices, or enough strength of mind to be able to power through. Also, making the right choices…
@Razgriz - Thank you! That was exactly what I was going for, so I am glad you reacted this way! I am trying to write a story about a specific character, that also at the same time is a character that the player gets to make together with me. It’s a weird mix, but that’s what made me make this into a game and not a book. Choices will hurt more if you are actually the one making them.
@kitkat - That is one valid path to make, but… there comes a time when telling the truth might smart more than actually continuing to lie. Just be prepared ;).
Also, one big question for everyone!
The meeting with Ortega in the last chapter is my attempt to code sort of an open ended discussion, where paths can go back and forth depending on choices and stats (for example, if you are too good friends with Ortega, they will catch you if you try lying to them). Was there anything there that felt weird/awkward? I think I managed to make all the paths connect independent on which order you arrived at them in, but it was my most complicated bit of coding yet and I am a bit rusty so I wanted to check.
I think that scene with meeting up with Ortega was good and there was nothing awkward about it but thats just my personal opinion. But other wise I still love this WIP and please keep up the good work!
Well in my opinion the way my character just ran away kinda makes it seem like Ortega is gonna try and find out what happened to us… Honestly I’m curious and afraid of how she’s gonna shun me man… Either way hope to see more.
Well in the scene I went from nice to fight to nice again, it felt kinda awkward but in a good way.
That’s where I feel you really hit a home run. To give you a little insight on myself, every time I play these games a check the stats pretty regularly to see what’s gone up or down and look at the options as a way to get the best outcome for me based on those stats. In this game, I looked at the stat screen one time before getting lost in the story. I started looking at the choices not so much as a means to get what I want but more like I’m the one actually making these choices and will have to live with the consequences.
Also as an added bit of depth I named my MC after one of my usual persona’s for interactive fiction but named the puppet after myself. Now that was really cool in a mind boggling way.
I feel bad for being the villain though I also feel as though I have to continue down this path. The only thing I know is that I’m doing this because of something the government did here. It’s so tantalizingly vague that nearly had me screaming at my tablet,“What did they do?! Why am I doing this?!”
Right now though it’s my feelings about those around me that are the most interesting. I’ve accepted the role as villain but can’t help but fail in finding a reason to despise the rangers and the good doctor. Hell even Rosie made me want to make sure nothing happened to her. This game has gone beyond my wildest expectations for pulling me into character.
@malinryden first of welcome back! I really loved the new update and cant wait to begin my date with the crazy scientist and get rid of all the heros and become the ultimate evil! MUHAHAHA
Was there anything there that felt weird/awkward?
No not really! My MC just felt mad and tired at Ortega and would much love to get rid of him, but well all in good time (No offens to all that like Ortega!)
This is AWESOME. I was confused about a couple of things, though.
The suit we are building, will that be our kind of permanent outfit, as in our legitimate costume?
Will I get to kill Herald BvS style?
Why is the writing so good?
The first two were serious. Amazing demo, though. Especially the setting. Like, damn. It’s so unique, and the back story just makes sense, and goes together so well, it’s almost intriguing. Modern day Wild West, with metahumans. My inner superhero fanboy is going off once again. I just can’t wait for that suit. I want to mix telepathy and ass kicking combos. Yeah. Thank you for coming back. The CoG lineup just needs this and every other superhero game coming out. None of them hit the nail on the head, they pick up a city bus and smash it over the nail again and again, until no bus is freaking left.
I can only echo your thoughts on this one. The writing is nothing less than phenomenal and I feel we are really lacking in this type of superhuman game. It’s dark, it’s gritty, you’re not some 18 year old in spandex saying you’ll save/doom the world. For me it hits all of the check boxes.
Oh, it seems I’ve been overcome by the inner fanboy in me.
I’m going to end up crying, aren’t I?
I want my character to be a hero because of Ortega, the discussion she had with my character made me want to change my initial playthrough (I wanted to be a villain before).
One of the best WIPs I have seen. Makes me feel like I’m red hood or something. Love the direction of the story and the characters. Keep it going.
So, for reference, what kind of superheroes are we dealing with?
On a scale of “Justice League” to “Powers”
I’m just guessing here because I’m not @malinryden, but the Rangers kinda feel like the West Coast Avengers. They’re not the strongest team, but they have heavy hitters and shouldn’t be underestimated. I’m just glad we don’t have to fight a team like the Great Lakes Avengers because while most of those guys are kinda losers, they’re technically unbeatable.
Well, when I said trying to avoid lying, I didn’t mean out of ethical reasons. I meant it for reasons you stated in this very reply, when you lie a lot it tends to stack onto each other and people figure it out, so it’s just safer to make your lies as close to the truth as possible. I was wondering if that was a tactic we could employ
Hey, I’ve been a lurker on this website for a few years now but never had much too contribute so I stayed a lurker. However I enjoy this game a lot and feel like I need to avoid my support. This game is GREAT. I feel like my character is a dark brooding villan who desperatly wants to be a hero and be with Ortega, however he has this secret that drives him to keep going, too shut out the outside world, to become the “____”.
Voice 20 characters…
Oh god yes you have been revived by those heathen thread Necromancers.
Now time to continue reading this masterpiece.
Super excited that this is still being worked on. I’d hoped as much! Absolutely love it.
