My favourite Fate combination is Hunger, Fate, Mob Boss. It has a, falling in reverse feeling, where each and every step they take their place at the top of Los Diablos’ underworld seems closer, after all, they were broken and pushed to the bottom by this city, the only way they will ever heal is by taking control of it.
Honestly I like all of the potential motivation + scar ´+ villain paths just because the opportunity to see various playthroughs and potential to see different sides to characters.
but my favorites from my Sidesteps playthroughs would be the following:
Justice + Outsider + Anarchist [Sneaky and cautious]
Life + Puppetmaster + Mob Boss who is friendly and likable. Cautious but with a high sense of ego and ruthlessness.
Anger + Revenge + Hero Hunter. Chaos incarnate! Very much “destroy it all” and “kill or be killed” variety
Life + Hunger + Thief who steals art and jewelry. Chasing the dream, I like the high daring and arrogant variety.
I have one Sidestep who has Fate motivation. They are an anarchist and their scar was originally Suicide but changed to Outsider in Retribution.
I think the Fate motivation works with everything as long as you can think of a reason why your Sidestep would choose certain villain path to go with it and what scar might factor into it (but I do personally find Thief career maybe least fitting for Fate motivation)
My favorite is Life + Hunger + Tech Thief, as a daring tech-savvy fighter. I generally play it as very pragmatic and fairly selfish. If the Farm offered a “you go your way and we go ours and we don’t screw with each other” style truce that he felt he could trust, he’d take it and not look back.
My second favorite is Justice+Revenge+Hunter, of the “make them stronger” variety. If she wants to take down the Farm, she will need allies, but all her potential allies are too weak right now.
Really, I like the motivation+scar combinations where the motivation flows into the scar, where you have to deal with things like where does Justice turn into Revenge? At what point do you have your Life and are now just feeding your Hunger?
Yay, twinsies!
My Step didn’t feel like choosing a name for himself, so he let the press name him. They gave him the name ‘Mastermind’, which doesn’t really fit him, and yet again, it plays into the whole “the villain persona doesn’t feel right for me, but I have no choice” idea.
Why did your Sidestep chose the name ‘Anathema’?
His base is tunnels (not a sewer!), and he still lives in his old shitty apartment. I really wanted him to be poor to add to the whole tortured soul theme of a reluctant villain (hence the worst living/working conditions), but I chose to steal from villains (because it’s the good guy thing to do), and he ended up being wealthy. I don’t know if I should change it and make him poor for real, or just leave it like that, because it’s hilarious that he has so much money but he hangs out in the tunnels with the squatters. My headcanon is that he thinks he doesn’t deserve this money, so he chooses not to use it, unless he can give it away for charity.
Mine is addicted to sugar. Sweet vice for a sweet Sidestep!
Limited Twins…
You are not going to try and steal Ortega, are you???
Because we are haunted by her. The Anathema MC, feel guilt over her death.
In Book 2, I think it was in the 2nd book where it say something like ‘If I didn’t trail behind, Anathema would have been in Steel dampener range’ or something. I’m assuming there is some guilt there, since the mc did trail behind when they were going up there to face heartbreak. Steel was at the front, Ortega was behind him, then the MC, then Anathema…
Mc fault or not, there is trauma related to Anathema death and the bond the mc had with her was broken in a terrible way. (I mean, she literally melted her own face in front of the mc…its a miracle they can even sleep at this point).
So, yeah. An mc with more guilt baggage…fun for the whole family!
Mine is poor…have enough guilt for a couple of life time, not gonna add ‘Swindling Dirty Money to survive’ to that heavy burden.
Sugar is good for telepath…
But not the other vices. I’m a smoker, so I use that vice often too.
But for a depressed-wish-for-death-MC…alcohol work better.
On the plus side…it get me Steel Dissaprove -10
More reason to drink I say
@Nemureru_Mori beside, it turn out being poor is good! Just look! Ortega got us Gucci! Talk about being Pampered Think she can get my mc some Louis Vitton?
Hehe, no! (Not with this MC at least ) This Sidestep had a secret crush on Ortega, but now these feelings are disappearing because he’s falling for Steel.
Aww, so it’s like a tribute to Anathema, in a way. I love it - it’s very touching and sad.
Ortega simply couldn’t resist such an opportunity to give some proper clothes to your poor Step, the breakout was just an excuse!
Oh, I’m sure she can! (As long as you’re not a mass murderer, like my Ortega-mancer…)
and since my Mc is a certified asshole, Oh man I’m gonna give Ortega so much shit over Gucci
Don’t care if the ribs hurt!
it was Malin doing lol I just run with it lol
Yay Steel romance! I’m always happy to see this, Steel is my favourite RO here and yet no one seems to like them, even Herald seems to be more popular, like people want a puppy for a lover.
I ADORE Steel! But to be fair, I adore all the ROs (including puppy Herald ). And if not enough people love Steel, we just have to love him twice as much, which is not a hard thing to do!
I like Steel. Not gonna romance him, but I like him. Can’t stand Harold though lol
Steel has some fans too, maybe they aren’t vocal enough. But he got some Lovin too.
That’s exactly my main Step’s combo She’s a street smart tactician and she’s very bad at being a villain - not killing anyone, saving civilians, etc… And being in love with Ortega is making things so complicated because she wants to tell him everything but she’s afraid to lose control.
That is another one I really enjoy. I like the dynamics with the crew quite a lot.
I tried the Anger + Revenge + Hero Hunter path, but I couldn’t finish this playthrough, maybe some day…
My main Step’s combo is Outsider + Truth + Hero Trainer. Like your Step, he’s a villain, but not a bad guy (he’d probably say that he only seems decent because the Special Directive and others such as the Void are heinous). He did not expect to fall for Herald after agreeing to train him (and in some instances, he falls for Ortega too. In the past he was too shy (and afraid) to tell her how he felt, but he’s glad she reciprocated his feelings now), but he’s glad for it all the same.
Meme time
But seriously, this part always makes me wonder how Sidestep must have felt when Owl said it
Poor kid.
There’s just too many responses for me to thank everyone, but I love all of your ideas! I can’t wait to try them out.
Do you have to find someone else to put the Regenerator together if you’re confess to Mortum, or is it possible to wait? I don’t really trust anyone else when it comes to Mad Science. I’d rather not maintain the lie, but I also don’t want to put Angie at risk. The regenerator also seems like the way to get them in a room together, and making out.
And, is it possible to win the fight against Hollow Ground, Nocturne and Jake?
If you’re tech savvy you can try doing it on your own, probably + Ximena help as well.
If you go in your own body there are many paths to winning that fight, do you want me to list all of them?
Mortum can help later in book 3 if you have not completely piss them off
Personally I like the Mob boss or Thief career, since for Mob boss route Sidestwp think along the lines that finding their teammates was like fate and everything seemed to come together without much effort.
For thief career Sidestep thinks everything in their life is stolen so thief career is just another think that is fared to happen.
And for me ‘Revenge’ scar is best fit! Since Sidestep feels like everything is meant to happen in fate motivation what wouldn’t be the best part that than ‘Revenge’ scar?
I’m obsessed with playing characters with the heart of a hero and put them through the worst trauma over and over, only for them to still choose to sacrifice themselves to save others/do the right thing. The emotional reward of being viewed as a monster/villain only to end up being more virtuous than everyone else can’t be compared to anything.
With that in mind, I play an anarchist Heartbreak (I think the scar was about a void you can’t fill) who’s “closer to a hero you may think”, hellbent on exposing the truth; if he’s going to be hunted and tortured again at the Farm he’s gonna take all the corrupt and morally bankrupt people responsible for it with him.
That’s the hunger scar, which to be fair gives a big 20% boost to empathy when you pick it.
