Still moving forward, but slower than anticipated. Life got busy.
Build a castle to hide in, where you can write in peace and we’ll man the walls. Until your purple robed guests secretly poison you at a feast…

Hey guys I’m wondering if it’s possible to marry and have kids because I’m a fan of that in the past games where you can build a dynasty?
It probably won’t be a high priority, since this is very much more of a simulator type of game than anything story based
Hello. How long has that been active since your last post?
Author was still working on it as of September 29
I’m not sure but I think so
Just a quick appreciation comment, because I feel a little bit sentimental this night.
Your games (Last Heir trilogy, Last Wizard, and Life of a Wizard) are one of few games that introduced me to CoG/HG community. I was always found it amusing that your game (from Last Heir trilogy, Last Wizard, and Life of a Wizard) is somewhat interconnected.
I considered yours are my personal “hood-classic” in this community.
So, I’m strongly looking forward to whatever you make.
Thanks for your vote of confidence. I really do appreciate it.
Well, I’m coming up on 10 years of game writing in February, more about that later.
More importantly to this thread, progress is speeding up.
Yesterday I re-playtested and fixed errors through chapters one and two. I built my kingdom up to the iron age, but I did it differently than intended. A random event gave me the coins for the bloomery instead of having to make stores to tax the people. I don’t know if it’s a bug or a feature yet.
Today I re-playtested and fixed errors through chapters three and four. My kingdom is strong, but I still haven’t bothered building an economy yet. I think it’s fine, so I’m calling it a feature.
I’m going to keep going. The game will have six chapters. I’ve honestly forgotten how far I’ve already finished, but I know it isn’t done.
Ever onwards! Finish the plot, finish the nobles (most are done), and finish the two endless mode features. And then test, test, test!
Congrats onten years may there be many more years to come
Chapter Five went well. Lots of narrative.
I fixed a big hole that I had been putting off and although I haven’t seen it break, I haven’t seen it work either. Should be good.
I’ve run into the end of the coded Nobles. All and all, they’re pretty much complete and actually have more done then I remembered, although the last couple (War and Finance) have some parts that need reworked and fixed.
I still have an unidentified error that crashes the whole game. It must be an odd combo because it’s only hit me twice so far.
The current requirement for the story needs to be lessened, it’s too slow. Gotta keep the tempo up. Once I fix it, I’ll continue Chapter 6, which is the final chapter.
The balancing of stats, costs, and values has been tricky. Beta will be so helpful.
I’ll keep on it tomorrow. Happy New Years, everyone.
Glad to hear about the progress may I ask about the total word count so far?
I don’t think the word count works for this type of game, but it’s at 78,150. It’s mostly code, which is hard to measure by length/amount.
I was surprised to see that I started this game in 2018. Seems that most of my games have been paused to write something else only to be picked up later and finished. But this is it. This will be game number 9.
It’s frowned upon to ask for release updates. The community really guards that rule. It’s a good rule, but people often miss it because it’s a little counter intuitive.
Really hard to guess a release time, but I feel super close to finishing the first draft. I’d love to start beta testing soon. Summer at the latest, spring seems possible, winter if we’re lucky?
Once beta starts, it gets a life of its own. Hard to say how long I’ll test and balance it. I’ve never seen a game like this before.
Then it goes into the production queue. CoG has really grown over the last 10 years. When I finished Star Force Captain it surprised me how long it takes to go from submission to release date.
So, we’ll see.
Finished repairing the broken and unfinished code for the nobles and it works! Fixed a half dozen other things too.
Also finished fleshing out how Upkeep will work and it shouldn’t be difficult to add. It gives the Office of Finance a nice perk which is great in the end game.
Nobles are pretty much done except for some fine turning.
I got the arena option half done. It’s going to be a neat addition at all stages of the game and act as the endless mode I wanted.
I’ve moved the ruler upgrades to its own option. The hero upgrades will fit in perfectly. It gives a nice end-state and connection to the resource management side of the game.
I still need to touch up the diplomatic method of
getting the final heroes as well as test the invasion method.
I also want to touch up and add to the random, kingdom, and weather events.
I’ll wrap up the arena first and then finish the plot,
which will be easier now with some of the new code I wrote for the arena scenes.
The endless mode is going to be interesting. One mathematical system for getting stronger and another for the enemies getting stronger. I’m hoping to aim them at each other just right and see what happens.
I’ve been careful to keep numerical stats easily changeable and I’ve used lots of alterable constants. I’m trying to make the balancing stage as manageable as I can by preparing for it now.
Woo hoo! The Grand Tournament is now finished. Starts with training grounds, turns into the arena, then the Great Tournament, and finally the endless mode of the Grand Tournament.
It starts very small, with one-on-one battles. This is great for the early game with some nice early-game rewards.
It expands slowly, with some story, through two-on-two, three-on-three, and all the way up to eleven-on-eleven (which means acquiring, training, and using all of the heroes.)
Phew!
I’ve also updated the first page (which I do often) which shows what’s next, which is the plot. The last chapter is ready to be finished, which won’t be so bad now that I’ve completed the code for various hero battles.
Do you mean the same tournament from LH3 with Solo, Team, Free-for-All matches, and arena challenges like the maze and traps?
Not exactly. Different matches, but perhaps the beginnings of the same tournament.
I’m enjoying writing an origin story and connecting many different ideas from past works, but with zero need for knowledge for new players.
So yes, there is a connection.
Sheesh this game will be awsome
