Consolidated Thread of Game Ideas For Authors

The avengers is the result of heroes who were alone, special in their own little bubble, meeting each other for the first time, popping the bubble.

Thats why it was hype.

That’s what always turned me off about the idea of the Avengers (and the Justice League). Each world-bubble has an internal logic which usually gets thrown off and watered down when you smush it together with someone else’s bubble. One of the heroes’ worlds and concerns almost inevitably ends up getting put in the shade by the others’.

The MCU managed to win me over at first. I was surprised at how much I liked the original Avengers movie, and by Infinity Wars/Endgame I was totally sold. But among the many problems of the more recent Marvel stuff, my old complaint has rolled up again. When heroes who’ve faced cosmic horrors are suddenly getting all high-stakes about a local crime kingpin, it falls flat for me.

They also were not the first superheroes on Earth. Avengers, I mean.

I think it could work if the different heroes are designed to operate in the same world from the start, but even then you’ll face the problem of either having the team to be useless, or the readers complaining the MC is outshined by all the rest.

(And also the way the request is worded is super making me not want to have anything to do with it. It’s really off-putting.)

Absolutely. I’ve always loved X-Men. It’s why I’ve never liked the idea of mashing the X-Men into a wider comic-book or movie universe where the mutant-human conflict is a minor theme rather than central.

Download: Lovecraftian inspirations from real life and beliefs by Adeptus7

You can use it for absolutely free, in any way You want - as a part of Your games, story, whatever. And You don’t have to reward or mention me in any way.

This brochure contains inspiration drawn from the beliefs of peoples who actually inhabit the Earth now or in the past, or from facts taken straight from history or science. Each case includes the suggestion, how given beliefs or facts can be interpreted in the spirit of cosmic horror, emphasizing their appropriate elements or bending them slightly. Sometimes the descriptions are quite brief - a detailed discussion of each topic would take a lot of space and time. These are rather teasers intended to show why a specific thing may be interesting for fans of eldritch vibes and possibly encourage them to take a closer look at the topic.

The article is intended primarily for Game Masters who play games in systems inspired by Lovecraft’s works, such as Call of Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu or Delta Green. However, I hope that other fans of cosmic horror will also find something for themselves here. The facts presented here may also be interesting for people who are not familiar with the work of The Loner of Providence, but some of the references may be unclear to them.

If You have Your own “Lovecraftian” trivia, please, share.

Here are contents of my brochure:

There was a thread about what games we would like. I’m saying my piece so hopefully COG will make more games like this. I like how you’re turning TTRPGs into games. I would like you to continue doing that. However the World of Darkness I’m familiar with is 20th anniversary edition and not 5th. So if you could make the WOD games with that edition’s options that would be great. And not just WOD and Chronicles of Darkness. Other RPGs too, like Exalted 3e/Essence, Dungeons and Dragons 4e/5e, Pathfinder, perhaps too many to list. Two more things:My Unpopular Opinion: If the genre isn’t dating sim no romance options please. Also I’ve noticed people putting autistic NPCs into their game and since I’m autistic myself I’d like the option to say to those NPCs: I’m autistic too. Please and Thank You.

I hope to see more samurai stuff either by another fantasy world or by Sengoku Japan or even beyond, or earlier like the Genpei War or the Onin War.

I also like to see more in which you are in a leadership role.

Can I just ask which of you COG or hosted games devs would be willing to creat a deep storytelling story about your own version of the Avengers and our MC could be a super soldier like captain America or a gamma monster like the hulk, or a spy like Natasha and Clint or a tech genius like Tony stark tbh I think most of us would be really interested in it……. Just a thought

You posted the exact same thing a month ago, and several people responded to your post. The answer hasn’t changed. Stop spamming.

Maybe more martial arts themed RPG’s that feature Korean martial arts such as Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon or Hwa Rang Do. Or Japanese martial arts such as Jujitsu, Judo, Karate or even Ninjutsu or even Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian or other martial arts.

There was a WIP called Tale of Two Princes but progress seems to have halted.

Either way I would like to see more samurai based games or ninja based games or even daimyo based games.

The Cold War is a historical period that remains somewhat unexplored in the CoG/HoG catalog, and gritty, morally-grey espionage/military fiction lends itself well to the choice-driven stories of the Choicescript format. Additionally, if an author is looking to get topical with their fiction, many — if not most — of the Cold War’s legacies still live with us today. In that vein, here are a few bleak Cold War-themed ideas and titles I thought people might find compelling:

  1. Havana Dreams — You play as a person in a missile silo, on duty in October 1962. American or Soviet, it doesn’t truly matter which. You interact with your fellow missileers and other people in your environment. Perhaps you ponder life, or find new love, or maybe just manage to help out your family. Maybe you help your colleagues with their dilemmas, or become friends. But then — shock twist! The Cuban Missile Crisis goes hot, and you wonder what, if any, meaning your choices have had in the impending light of atomic fire, as you make the most fateful decision of all. Do you and your fellow soldiers turn your keys?

  2. Shadows at the Wall — You play as an down-on-their-luck American spy, just blown in East Berlin. Night is approaching quickly, and the Stasi are closing in. If you want to live to see the morning, you’ll need to make your way to West Berlin - either over the Wall, through it in disguise, or around it by swimming the river. Washington is a world away and entirely helpless. If caught, you will be disavowed. Do you have the cowardice to maybe sacrifice an American asset to ensure your escape? Or are you determined to stick to honor?
BONUS: Are you willing to sacrifice a little realism for drama? Let’s say the main character has an old friend/flame on the other side of the curtain, back from the good-old WWII days when you were both fighting the Germans. They’re a KGB colonel by now. Perhaps with their assurances you might have a less…torturous captivity, or maybe even a peaceful defection. Are you willing to reach out?

  3. United — Congratulations! You are a new, young official in the UN Secretariat. Over the course of your tenure in the UN, make personal decisions, rise through the ranks and deal with events from the Greek Civil War to the Euromissile Crisis, wrangling bureaucrats, hostile world powers, and organizational minutiae to successfully hold the world together. Does the break-room have enough coffee? Have you made sure that the US and USSR get exactly the same amount of time on UN radio? Can you effectively serve as a back-channel between the two Koreas during DMZ incidents? Help steer a very un-united world that has defeated evil - and then decided to go right back to great-power rivalry. What does your life look like in the shadow of international politics? You can get a little humorous with this idea. Perhaps it’s a comedic satire.

Or maybe games set in Ancient or pre-unification China?

I have a great idea for a fantasy story called the Twelve, based on the traditional zodiac signs. I want to write a create your own adventure story about a group of 12 diverse individuals who are brought together by fate to fulfill their destiny to protect mankind from an all-powerful ancient evil. Each character will be unique and represent a different zodiac sign in abilities, personality, and behavior. You will be able to create the main character and customize their name, looks, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and romantic interests. You will also be able to customize their weapon of choice from a list of provided options(Ex. Sword, Spear, Scythe, Bow/Arrows, Maybe a gun of some sort, etc.). Include many choices throughout the story to make it feel more interactive. Provide a list of 3-4 options for each and every choice.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but this is Homestuck.

What the heck is Homestuck? I’ve never seen or heard of it lol.

I did a deep dive into Homestuck and I still am not seeing the similarities at all man. Please enlighten me.

We need more stories that if they have gods, the gods should be portrayed with less mortal understandings of morality, i really like when gods are messy, they are screwed up, and not always the best of people but they are considered the “good” ones because the others for some arbitrary understand are considered the “bad” ones, but when you really look at them they are all just kinda assholes and who’s good or evil is entirely subjective because they are all just kinda screwy
