CoG and HG: suggestions on what to play - Consolidated Thread

Depends entirely on their interests and story preferences. What genres do they like? Do they love or hate romance/fantasy/superheroes/vampires? Would they prefer a teenage MC over an adult MC or vice versa? What books/shows are they into? CoG offers a wide variety of games but what some players appreciate, others might detest with a passion.

Some pointers:

Superhero fan? Psy High (if a high school setting is preferred) or Heroes Rise (for that comic book feel). (Fallen Hero is my personal favorite BUT: The series isn’t finished and those two other titles might be a better fit for a CoG newbie, especially if they are looking for stories with more heroic, less ambivalent MCs.) Vampire romance fan? Wayhaven. The Expanse fan? Asteroid Run. Sherlock Holmes fan? A Study in Steampunk. Wrestling fan? Slammed. History nerd? Choice of Alexandria.

General recommendation if romance is desired without fantasy elements: CrĆØme de la CrĆØme.

Depending on whether you/they want to research more titles on your/their own, maybe consider having a look at @BourbonDingo’s insightful game reviews over here.

Hmm, to be more specific I’m looking for something engaging enough for an adoult, but with an easy enough English to be enjoyable for someone who doesn’t use English that often even though she studied it enough, so what I mean it shouldn’t be so complicated that it’d scare her away (She can get to the more advenced stuff once her English is less rusty).
I don’t think she’d enjoy to play as a teenaged MC. I think she’d prefer to play as an adult… Since she is new to roleplaying I think it’d be too jarring for her to play an MC with too much age difference from her actual age (early 30ies).
Leslie L. Lawrence is her favourite author, so I guess that means she is into crime fiction, maybe some adventure, but I think she’d also appreciate some romance… Hmm, maybe Wayhaven Chronicles would work, I don’t think the supernatural creatures would bother her that much… Oh, she likes the Harry Potter series too so I’m sure some fantasy elements wouldn’t bother her.

At first I suggested her to give try to Choice of Robots, because that was one of my early favorites (and I thought earlyer CoG titles would be a simpler read for someone with a rusty English), but maybe I did a mistake there given I’ve never heard her enthusiastically talk about any sci-fi books or movies.

Given this extra knowledge do guys have more suggestions?

Also do you guys think she could handle Wayhaven Chronicles with her level of Englis?
Once again if it comes to studiyng she did pass the official English examination (I don’t know which level she did), but while I did never pass it, hell I didn’t even had the opprtunity to even try that, I just had that few years of English classes in school, but I developed with interest in engaging with this languaged communities, reading books and watching movies in this language. (I guess that makes me more experienced about English even though she has better papers, but if we both tried to go for a job which requires English understanding, it’d be probably she who gets the job, because she has papers. But the fact remains still, she is rusty).
But this isn’t about me, this is about Alice, my friend. So my question stays the same, do you think she could handle Wayhaven Chronicles? Or what else do you think do you think she could handle with her rusty English which would also fall in right with her interests (which I also tried to give more info about)?

I personally think that Wayhaven is fairly straightforward in terms of the English used in the game–it’s not super idiomatic, and there’s little jargon. However, this is from the standpoint of a native English speaker, and I can understand your concern (even though I did pass national Spanish exams, I’d have a hard time reading a book in Spanish written for native Spanish speakers without a translation dictionary). Maybe recommend her Wayhaven, but with an asterisk that she might need a translator or a translation dictionary?

So that’s your word for it. Thank you for clearing that up.

That makes sense. I had to also use dictionaries and translators, sometimes still do, even though it’s so many years for me since I started to learn this language through practice and mistakes (from which I learned) and not the official way which would also get me a paper.

As I said Alice has the paper, but not the experiences, which I got.

Maybe I could offer her my services to translate some terms she doesn’t understand or if she struggles. Even if I don’t have the official papers I’m confident the I could do that to her. I’ve read these books and I understood them.

Anyone know if there’s COG games that have a similar vibe to something like Vermis, Fear & Hunger, or Darkest Dungeon? Or even unspecifically dark fantasy?

First of all, welcome @FrogTheToad.

Fantasy is one of (if not the most) popular genre in this forum. Some games are dark, although I wouldn’t call them dark fantasy. But I haven’t played all games and all wips.

If you’re looking for a Dungeon Crawler, then there’s Raiders of the Icepeak Mountains.

Any suggestions on where I can find (either as a package deal or separately) middle-aged ROs? In-depth, complex, realistic, genuine and organic relationships (platonic and otherwise)? Complex, realistic ROs that have ā€œflawsā€ and won’t just automatically kiss your ass if you’re just a little nice to them? Good sapphic/lesbian romances?

There’s a HUUUGE update for Trial of the Demon Hunter that will hopefully come out in around a week, so you might consider checking out the demo for it whenever the update is available.

Man it’s been a while since I was on here :dotted_line_face:
All the notifs I’ve been getting are ā€œnew topicā€ this ā€œnew topicā€ that, and most of the old WIPs I followed are either dead dead or MIA.

I’ll be asking the community for help here! What are some good games to play recently? I’m a big fan of romance in IFs (play as straight female, if that matters), but honestly anything goes since I feel like I gotta rebuild my collection!

I always play Aro in these games, so I don’t think I can recommend anything based on romance.

Have you played Keeper of the Sun and Moon? It’s a magical school game where everyone is a nonhuman of sorts and you’ve only just found out you’re not as human as you thought you were (probably, there actually is an option to be human). It’s a very fun and interesting game, lots of characters to get to know. TW Mind control though, it’s a big theme for at least one of the species you can select.

Fallen Hero Retribution came out rece-wait, oh god it was in 2023! Er, still, highly recommend it and its predecessor. You play as a villain, though it’s your choice how far you fall.

Choice of the Cat is from 2017, but I only read it this year and it’s probably my favorite Choice of Game choice of game! Or at least, it’s second to Choice of Robots. You play as a housecat that’s recently been adopted into a family, and it’s really endearing. I loved playing a very scared cat who grew to care about their family and about their fellow animals.

A Mage Reborn Stars Arisen (mixed those up!) is probably my favorite historical/fantasy Hosted Game. It came out in 2022. You play as the progeny of a godlike entity who’s wasting away, and you’ve been tasked with restoring your mother to power.

On my end, in 2019 I asked a question. I would like to ask that question once more!

Very long IF recs, please? It could be a demo, the main thing for game to be potentially big (maybe it’s already full of content).
As an example: Wayfarer, A Mage Reborn, Shepherds of Haven, One Knight Stand, Stars Arisen, The Golden Rose
Thanks!

If you haven’t played it before, Tin Star (you play as a Marshal in the american west, basically a standard western genre game) is a great one. It is one of the longest published Choicescript games of all time, with a word count of over 1 million, and it actually felt like a long IF when actually playing through as well.

ZESH (Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven) and Tin Star come to mind immediately. Fallen Hero duology is also there.

So, May 20th is coming soon and I’m mentioning this day cause this is the moment where I can buy at least one CoG/HG book till the next month. But I’m really torn apart right now: While looking at the games I did not played and yet I want to, I can’t decide between buying ā€œStrongholdā€ series and ā€œVTM: Night Roadā€ book with all content. Can anyone recommend me one of those books?

I really care about ROs, but I also like making new friends in those books. I don’t like full-time resource management game, but I’ve heard Stronghold does not have too much of these, and Night Road, from what I know, has some kind of car customisation.

I’ve would bought Strongold right away but there is one ā€œlittleā€ problem: The second game, Caverns of Sorcery, does not have enough info for me besides interview with the author and the description. I’ve heard you can romance (spoiler for one of ROs) A goblin and that interested me, but I don’t even know who that person is exactly, only their race. I’ve tried looking through forum but to no avail.

So, tl;dr. Should I buy Stronghold or Night Road? Thanks in advance for any help!

I actually still haven’t played Night Road, but as a fan of the author’s other work and of the other World of Darkness games, I’d be willing to bet it’s worth your time and money.

I have played the Stronghold series, several times, and I can recommend it with enthusiasm. There are management elements in both games, but they’re well-integrated into entertaining stories full of places to explore and relationships to build.

It’s true that you can romance a goblin in Caverns of Sorcery. His name is Heldir, and you meet him in the caves a few chapters into the story. I never got around to romancing him when I was testing the game, but I did enjoy befriending him.

Is there anything else specific you’d like to know?

Well, I finally got some info about this goblin fella! Yay! Thank you very much, I’ll try to explore this route on my own, hopefully without too much sadness and angst. But it’s already exciting to know something about this person.

The only thing I would want to know about Caverns of Sorcery more is about our choices: Obviously, they will matter, it’s COG title after all, but does our choices from the first game, A Hero’s Fate will impact our adventure from Caverns of Sorcery ? I love seeing long-term consequences of our actions and it seems like those books seem like a great occasion to see those. So, will they impact something important?

Again, thank you really much for answering my question! I really appreciate it!

You will see your choices from the first game reflected in the events of the second, although maybe not to the fullest potential that could have been. But there are certainly references to your major decisions about what to build and what kind of environment to cultivate. There’s a major character in the second game who will, in most cases, be someone introduced in the first. There are times the main character will think back to the events of the first game to compare history to present events.

Then it’s all set, I think. I will buy Stronghold series ASAP and try it out, I have already high expectations and I’m excited like never before! Thank you!

Heldir, here I come! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
