Choice of Rebels Part 1 WIP thread

I think it’s best to give these lines to Yetta. This would give her a nice off-screen character development.

With number 12 while I don’t agree with the specific suggestions I still think that sending the bandits off currently to survive the winter invalidates the Gandhi path a bit because you are basically tacitly agreeing that stealing is necessary to survive you just don’t want to see it happen. I find that a bit hypocritical of the MC. At least I would like to the the opportunity to give a speech to the departing rebels and encourage them to adhere to the nonviolent path. With CHA 2 you should succeed in convincing them.

12g - I quite like the idea of an expedition party. Plus idle hands, etc…

@cascat07 What would your vision be for how the bandits survive if they decide not to steal after you send them off?

@Fiogan
I assume much the same why the current band is just in a different area. Hunting and gathering and requesting support from local helots. Perhaps the MC could work with Aline to get a contact in the town(s) near the second rebel base, and further the smuggling connection. Basically it could be anything that is nonviolent and doesn’t harm the livelihoods of non-imperials. I think hurting other bandits would be counter-productive, and a lot of the above suggestions would violate the principles of a nonviolent movement. This is all in support of a Gandhi style nonviolent uprising.

I suppose it is possible that from a story mechanics perspective it doesn’t matter how they accomplish survival at the other rebel camp. A Gandhi-like MC just has to believe that his followers believe in the nonviolent path when he sends them off, otherwise he/she is just another hypocrite.

Perhaps a dilemma later in the story would be when they return after the winter, even though they left with the intention of nonviolent revolution they failed without your MC’s supervision. What now? Do you accept the wayward rebels back into the fold or do you exile them for breaking your code?

Hippie rebels :frowning: how about doing a sit down? Or one million helots march?

@Pepper Organizing the Whendward Festival? Planting weed?

Seriously, I think the best strategy for someone who attempts a nonviolent path is to bring the band out of the Hegemony (either into the Xaos-lands or the abhuman federation) and settle there, and later build up some kind of underground railroad for escaping helots and try to spread her/his ideas among the hegemonial population.

@cascat07 I envisioned b, e and g as completely peaceful and legal options, a and d as white-collar crimes similar to smuggling. c and f are supposed to be violent.

I second your idea of the MC giving a speach. There should be 3-4 options of what s/he encourages them to do, ranging form stay nonviolent to kill any hegemonials, just like after the interrupted harrowing.

@WulfyK

There’s most likely a very good reason why there are giant magical barriers blocking out the Xaos-lands. It’s already mentioned in-game that going out there is a death sentence.

There is a difference between running a rebellion and a personality based non violent uprising, if you don’t have the charisma your followers will be eating you soon enough

Well, Sneaks, you might trust the tyranny that perverted a religion of compassion until it rubber stamps them making an assembly line of death by torture, but I suspect the threat has been amplified all out of proportion as a propaganda tool of fear.

“We protect you from the chaos lands, now go jump into the slaughter house, you talking cow you.”

It smells far too much of Joe Mccarthy using the red scare as an excuse to go after the republican party’s political enemies.

@cascat07, I should have said earlier that I agree: sending people off to steal elsewhere doesn’t fit with a character path of principled nonviolence. You and @WulfyK have got good suggestions on how to improve that bit --and I also agree with Wulfy that the split-away band should be led by one of the named characters (Teva is a holdover from a version of the game before Elery, Radmar, et al had names).

@Pepper, they’re definitely very different kinds of rebellion, and as discussed above in the thread the nonviolent one will only work well for a charismatic leader. Just like fighting a guerrilla campaign will only work well for a high-COM leader.

@stsword

Makes sense, but I doubt it. That’s an awful lot of blood to devote to use as a mere propoganda tool. And we already know that there’s something weird going on out there - the “Xaos-storms”, whatever those are.

@Havenstone

Precisely how much blood is contained in a single vial?

@Sneaks, a Theurge’s bandolier generally contains a range of different-sized vials to accomplish different levels of Theurgic Change.

The smallest size – which is what you have a chance of taking in Rim Square – is about 10 mL in volume.

@Sneaks, if Bleys is executed, his family fleess into the Xaos-lands, and Ciels didn’t said that they dropped dead immediately after crossing the Ward, instead s/he mentions condemned and monsters who apparently live there, so it must be possible to survive there at least for a while - long enough for a small expedition party to explore some area.

I imagine the Xaos lands as something like http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Beyond_the_Wall : dangerous, and warded off for a good reason (the Xaos stroms seem to exist as Ciels reported seeing them crushing on the ward), but still habitable.

@Havenstone are going to erase Teva altogether or give her another role? And what do you think on my proposal for Yetta?

Also, form my expirience, fighting a guerrilla campaign works best for a INT 2 MC. Anything that can be achieved with a COM 2 stat can also be done with the use of theurgy, but a COM 2 MC won’t be able to rob the architelone, ultimately causing less damage to the Hegemony.

So has it been updated past the ambush of the merchant and his guard ?

@WulfyK

Actually a COM 2 MC can pull off the ambush on the architelone by kidnapping Bleys’ family, so long as you have a 1 in INT.

@Havenstone

Speaking of Bleys, during the kidnapping you can choose a motto or symbol for your rebellion, but that can be easily missed if one chooses to set fire to the barracks or avoid killing the alistairs altogether.

That won’t be the only opportunity to do so, will it? And why not have both instead of just one or the other?

@WulfyK, @Sneaks, You also need COM 2 to get the best result from each raid than if you used theurgry or had Zvad do it.

@Havenstone, while the topic is up could we add a religious motto or symbol? We seem to have a nationalist symbol in the gryphon; care to add an angelic helix into the mix?

Well, that’s a very logical assumption, Sneaks, if one thinks that the empire values the helots, but it’s quite clear that they don’t.

They forment rebellions just so they can have an excuse to kill more helots, so the official stance of the empire is apparently at the level of “We’re going to torture you to death because either 1) We’re bored, 2) It’s Tuesday, 3) I don’t like your face.”

The empire values a dead helot over a living one.

F***ity-f***. Just lost a lengthy response to several of the above issues because the mobile Vanilla didn’t autosave it – am I wrong to think it usually does that? Anyway, apologies, will recreate it later when I have time. For now, @Sneaks and @WH, yes, the choice of motto & symbol won’t be limited to the taxman path, you will be able to choose both, and having a religious option is a good idea.

@stsword, the empire hasn’t figured out how to automate most of what the helots do, so while any individual helot may be worth more in blood than labor, keeping an overall balance of living and dead ones is important. More significantly, they do have a lot of competing priorities for the blood they harvest, so something as thirsty as a Ward would need a good justification. Not necessarily the one they give the masses, but good enough to convince a Thaumatarch.
