So, about 1 hour ago, the brother of Magium’s author, Cristian Mihailescu posted on the Magium reddit that said author has passed on the 6th of August, apparently related to severe depression.
As one who got into these CYOAs partially through Magium’s influence, losing an important part of the community like this hurts immensely.
So I am making this topic to send the news along and for any tributes to the game or this author that folks would like to give.
Horrible. Thanks for sharing this information with us over here.
Magium is such a well-made, beautiful game, sad the author has left.
He still had so much to deliver to the world, both in Magium, and outside of it.
Even the way you could unlock chapters by playing instead of paying was innovative.
Man…I just reread the books last week, they were an outstanding author in the Choose your own adventure genre. So many choices being viable with many different routes being hilariously written, truly a great author. It was among my first reads, and really got me into reading CYOAs, few have matched what they delivered through Magium. It is quite sad to hear about this.
But let us for just a moment reflect on ourselves and remember that no matter who you are in this space, author, reader or editor or anything else that we all have our struggles, and that help exists for all of us should we seek it.
May their work live on in our hearts and minds, as we go about our daily lives and attempt to live our lives to the fullest in a world full of limitless choices.
I just reread Magium yesterday. This is awful. May they rest in peace. Goodbye to one of the greatest IF authors in history. Goodbye to my hero. Life is short, let it be known the effects of Christian’s work were not.
Damn… Magium was my first IFs game and what get me interest in IFs game as a whole in the first place, love the characters, love the story, have been waiting for years on it from when it was only book 1 and is the only few IFs that i play again and again so many time awating new chapter for book 2 and 3.
This is devastating, a beautiful journey that will never finished, there are few IFs that have captured me like Magium, i hope he found peace knowing that his work will be remembered fondly by many.
A line from his work and to honour him using his own work that he is very proud of. Mahad Selak, Mahad Maktar, glory in life, glory in death, spill some ale to the ground and take a drink like ours jolly battle loving Hardrik always do to honour the dead soldiers. I don’t have ale so this plum wine will have to do, thank you Cristian, it was a nice journey.
What sad news to wake up to Magium was one of my first introductions in the IF genre and I considered it a classic in my mind. This game was actually on my mind these past few days and was planning on rereading it soon, and then this news came
Condolence to his family and friends and may he rest in peace.
This breaks my heart. I’ve been a huge fan of his since his very first book, and I’ve replayed Magium to the point of exhaustion–me who normally gets easily bored with everything. He was a talented writer, with a great imagination, and able to keep you in suspense for years. No one deserves an end like that, but in this case my heart aches twice. What a painful day—the world has lost some of its color.
Devastating news. I wouldn’t have even looked at HG or COG without magium influencing me. He truly created something special. He was a great writer with a crazy imagination to match. May he rest in peace and know that his work helped so many through tough times.
