A Tribute to Magium's Departed Author

Magium was my first ever IF, and singlehandedly got me into text based CYOAs. It is also by virtue of butterfly effect, majorly responsible for who I am as a person now, and it changed me for the better.

I used to actively participate in its community about 7 years ago, and have fond memories of it. The few times I interacted with the author, he seemed like a nice person as well.

Rest in peace, authorman.

It always sad to hear another’s fall to depression.
I may not have known them personally but he gave me a fair bit of joy and happiness that lifted me up at times from my own depressions. May they rest in peace and if there is another world out there may they rest among it with no hassle, and have joy aplenty. And to the family from all of us we’re sorry for your loss they will be missed and remembered.

Magium was one of the first IFs for me, it ( along side Great Tournament ) introduced me to the interactive fiction world and DnD. The new is hard to take, the reality of how fragile human’s arts and dreams are hits me like a truck. One moment you have all these dreams and fantasies, the next they all gone.

But Magium’s legacy and spirit will live on, in the form of future stories and wonderful adventures, charming characters and breathtaking worlds.
So as hard as it might be, I will try to remember Cristian Mihailescu for his work and life, his dream of Magium and his legacy

Depression is a horrible, hungry beast that hides just beneath the surface of a person. Brightest blessings to his family and friends. Please if anyone out there is going through anything like this, reach out. I know it’s hard to let down your walls and defenses, but talking about it with someone can help. Heck, sometimes words aren’t even necessary, just sitting with someone can help.
To anyone out there who is going through something you can’t handle or you need to vent, or yell or cry or anything my private message me or email me childoftwohippies@gmail.com. I’ve been there, it took a conversation with a random complete stranger to help me out. If I can be that random person, don’t hesitate to reach out.

This breaks my heart.
Magium was a fantastic journey, that vastly improved after the first part.

I just learned of this news. That’s absolute heartbreaking to see.

From someone who discovered the world of IF’s through Magium, which indirectly brought me to this amazing forum with a vast collection of these creative worlds one can immerse themselves into, I feel a little more empty inside, knowing that we may never see the final vision of his beautiful creation.

Also, the running gag of Barry’s name being so common made me like my name a little more, because where I live, my name is just as common. All because I can use the joke of throwing a rock and hitting at least three others with the same name.

Since at this point I may be just rambling on and on, I’ll just finish with these words (so I may go back to lurking around).

Cristian Mihailescu, the one and only Supreme Overlord, wherever you may be, whichever worlds you may be exploring right now, I wish you all the best, for your work may not have been finished, but it will always be part of my life and of so many others who followed you and your work.

Thank you for all the good times I had reading your story,

Learned of the news from this post, rest in peace. I remember seeing the authors post on the forum before he had even started the app and followed the story along over the years.

Great characters, great story, thank you Cristian Mihailescu.

This is saddening. I was waiting for the completion of the story so I can read all the books 1 by 1 and am planning to read it before the app store removes it.

There is a community effort going on to port the existing content and continue the story based on what the author’s mother remembers. If anyone wants to contribute , feel free to join to dev or writing team . All details are available on the magium subreddit

That’s sad to hear I’ve had Magium on my phone for years always downloaded it again when I upgraded never once forgot it existed :pensive:

I discovered this on my own about two weeks ago, after downloading magium to a new phone and deciding to check up on the reddit to see if there was anything new. It hits particularly hard as not only is magium a long time favorite, but it was very much my introduction to interactive fiction many years ago and what lead to my discovery of choice of games LLC and joining this community.

I’ve also experienced what it feels like to lose someone in part to depression, and can sympathize very strongly with the family. I hope they can find some solace in the reach of his work and how beloved he was among the community.
