A Tale of Heroes (WIP) - 224k words. Updated 29/01/2025!

No, no. Though when you meet her, she isn’t exactly a hero either. She actually gets introduced in this book, though there won’t be a romance to speak of in it.

Are we going to get to fight a giant robot. Please tell me we get to fight a giant robot, I want to fight a giant robot…I am an idiot XD.

Realized how much I hate Forlorn. And it’s not because of his attitude or Aki issues. It’s because he’s has Heat Vision and we only have energy balls out of our hand. Meaning my MC will never look as cool as this

Well, if a giant robot squares up to the MC looking for a fight, what, are you going to run? No sir, that’s not a hero’s job!

To be fair, it’s energy balls at the moment. Who knows, maybe as you gain more mastery of your powers, you could even…

Well.

What if we can transfer the energy to shoot out our eyes instead of hands :brain:

Well, if you don’t mind cooking your brain, I suppose that’s possible, yes. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also I realized we’re kinda like Superboy from Young Justice if we just focus on strength. Now how do I get Forlorn to adopt me.

implying he hasn’t already.

You’re already the main trio’s kid, don’t you worry.

…

… Well.

Maybe worry a little.

Jesus fuck are those guys dysfunctional. :skull_and_crossbones:

Just played through the game for the first time in awhile (I think it had like one or two chapters at most then)
Really, really enjoyed it! Just so in love with our dysfunctional team!
Got a lot of thoughts but I figured I would start with my one real critique: In the prologue when you drop into the debate and meet everyone it is all really fast and chaotic (which might be the intention) but I feel overwhelmed by the amount of characters and just had no idea who was who? Maybe clearer descriptions of them would help, I am not sure.
With that out of the way a quick question or two: Just to clarify was Article 4 invoked because Stratton might be being mind controlled still? Might have missed this but does the League wear superhero uniforms or anything?
Anyways, I just love the characters!
Forlorn: Interesting (but good choice) with Forlon as the leader. He is clearly the closest there is to a Superman equivalent powerwise but personality he is so different! Really not at all a charismatic leader. He does bring a very good determined focus so that is nice.
Seeker: All I want is his approval! I love him, he is great, very mysterious and clearly has a lot of secrets regarding being The Seeker. Not sure what else to say about him, but he is a very interesting mentor for the MC and like I said, all I want is his approval!
Dark Star: Dunno, seems like he might be interesting but the MC has barely interacted with him and he sucks up to Stratton which is a huge point against him.
Mars: The closest we have to an “outsider” RO. I like him well enough but haven’t romanced him. If we end up on a collision course with the White House again, he might be faced with divided loyalties
Nova: Also haven’t run an RO path yet (ok the only one I have done so far is Lat). He hasn’t made to much of an impression on me, like Mars, but he seems fine? Could be friends?
Ignis: Wow breaking my heard with the doomed romance thing :joy: She is a delight and I love her so much. She is an interesting public face for the League and clearly has a lot going on beneath the surface.
Aki: Was my initial idea for the RO on my latest run through, she is great! Love her! She is certainly lacking confidence and is a bit awkward but she is so adorable and her being friends with Lat is a delight considering how different they are and I want to see more of that Duo. Her relationship with Forlorn is a bit yikes, he really needs to learn how to give her space…
Latooni: The BFF! I love her so much! (What I love your characters ok!) She started out as a bit of a overbearing but good friend and the more I interact with her the more I realize she is super weird and I love it! I dunno, she is great! Also a great RO and a fun match for my more thoughtful MC (Gloria compared him to Forlorn, he was not happy with that). Its a fun relationship and I want more of it! Just love how she mostly kept her feelings from being to obvious until she asks the MC for a dance and then she is just waiting to make it all official! Its great, she is great, I lover her.
Gloria: I would never vote for him for political reasons (wrong party, VP to Stratton, etc) but he seems like a solid boss and President. A little to good… Just waiting for the other shoe to drop with him, he is just to good to be true after Stratton! Although I hope not, feels like the cult is enough of a threat that it would be good to have a competent President at the helm. Wondering if signing on with Stratton was just pure ambition or if there is something more to it. Interesting decision to have him under the 35 age limit but a lot of fun political history behind it being possible that you added. Anyways, right now I would follow this man into war, even if I wouldn’t vote for him, which is good because our MC is about to fight giant robots to save him so…
TLDR: This story is great. These characters are great. I love them.

So you’re saying if we go for energy, we can do stuff like piccolo’s hell zone, and Vegeta’s friggin’ final flash!?!?!?!? Is it possible to destroy a meteor or level a city o.o?(Innocently asking) also it’d be hilarious to have our mc be a clumsy bastard who does more damage than good and from whom people would like to get the hell away from rather than looking at them for help lol, for example you get people injured fighting the fire guy, then you leave more than a dozen people with broken bones, then you maybe destroy half a city lol, just thinking about it makes me crack the hell up, like imagine Superman shows up but instead of being filled with hope the people start yelling "“it’s Superman run for your lives!”

The MC is taking the recent development with Ignis and Seeker remarkably well.

So those on Ignis’s path, are dating their foster mom…
Great Thanks for ruining that.

He seems to good to be true…and if it seems like that it usually is. He may have the same agenda for the superpowered as that Maxwell guy…without being as forward about it.
No offense to him but as a voter my mc is still leaning towards that governor Maia as the only seemingly decent pick. Hope she stands more of a chance than Warren did. Although being in the League probably stops my mc from volunteering or endorsing her openly.

The worrying thing is that without Stratton they may have a chance to get some version of that super-powered control act through since they control the Senate. :worried: And to do so before Maxwell can steal looking tough on this issue from them.

Plus it would make the mc canonically bisexual…a thing I’d like to avoid usually.

I’d have expected them to believe Stratton about the mc being some super-powered terrorist.

I’m torn on this. On the one hand having privacy is nice on the other Mars shouldn’t be the only pretty boy on the team and I have a feeling the league collar is making my mc’s appearance more generic and therefore less cute.
Which ties into the next problem of the setting not using superhero costumes and the mc’s possible clothing styles all being fairly generic for their genre presumably so that the mc doesn’t stand out in public too much.

Presumably one advantage of not having to hide our identity in public any longer at some point and one that may well be the decisive one for my mc is that we could really start to dress in a more stand out way…and for my mc that means finally switching to the darker but not quite gothic style but with my favourite (expensive) leather replacing the ripped and torn look. :persevere:
As a sidenote never got why kids pay so much for pre-ripped and torn clothes, especially a kid in the mc’s line of work where, like in Keeper, all of their clothing will eventually get torn and ripped on its own.

This is a good suggestion! Once I go back to check on the first chapters, I’ll add a couple more descriptions to the characters.

As for your question: Stratton isn’t necessarily mind-controlled, your MC mentions that the controller’s power goes away when she gets hurt, but that’s an assumption, and Gloria doesn’t really enjoy working only on those. Plus, Stratton willingly giving away power has less chances of happening than an alien invasion, so it was the only way to get him out of the way.

Thanks so much for your compliments, as well! I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying the cast, I hope you continue to do so as the story develops further. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

She should! Stratton’s acts have more than caused a drop in the Liberation Party’s popularity, so Maia has a very decent chance of winning the presidency.

… Of course, Americans have this really weird habit of re-electing a president in the case of war or horrible outward crisis. But the US is at peace, so that shouldn’t be a worry.

… Right?

Legally? No. League Members are free to interact with whoever they wish, or support whatever candidate they like.

Is that ethical? Probably not. Is it setting a dangerous precedent? Absolutely.

Yes, this is also a worry. I will also add a choice for the MC to tell a confessing Lat that they aren’t interested in women at all, which slipped horribly by me.

Not very likely. Stratton speaks up a lot about how the League is a threat and what have you, but by game start, the League is still a very beloved organization in the country. Stratton has been swimming against a gigantic current trying to poison the public’s view of them, and so far, the only legitimate strike he’s gained is Ignis’ identity leaking.

… Speaking of that, anyone ever wonder how that identity leaked? It sounds like something only a very select few would know…

Sidenote: I’ve fixed all the typos brought up so far, and I think I’ve managed to make it so Ignis/Lat/Aki don’t send you texts more than once. I’ll get around to adding the new choices and such in the next week.

She also has to first beat Maxwell in the Revolutionary Party’s primaries, which is what the debate the mc crashed at the beginning of the story was probably all about.
Maxwell on the other hand seems even worse than Gloria or Stratton.

Well I suppose my mc will cross that bridge or at least have a serious talk with Ignis about it should it come to that as we have still not had the opportunity to meet Maxwell and Maia more properly beyond just crashing their primary debate on live national television.

That cutie Mars and his damned supernatural hearing, eh?
Well I can understand just how hard and unglamorous life can be as a political worker, having been one for nearly a decade myself. So respect to Mars, especially considering his horrible boss and the fact that Mars with his looks could probably instantly land himself a job as a supermodel means he probably really does it out of conviction even if that is just a belief in democracy and the system, rather than a more specific ideology.

@Jjcb ya know and I might be off the mark but I get this feeling that Marcus the vp is the broken king at least it’s my suspicion from what I’ve noticed so far in my current play through lol

She has to first beat Maxwell, yes. Ironically, Maxwell shouls have a slight disadvantage there because he’s advocating for closer monitoring/integration of the League into the government, but he’s coached it in such a way that it instead looks he is nothing but the most loyal of the League’s supporters.

And yes, that was part of the plan for that debate, smashing Maxwell on his rhetoric. The MC hasn’t had much chance to interact with politics yet because of what their job has ended up being, but eventually, you’ll probably get a chance to go deeper into the establishment.

Perhaps so! I mean, it certainly wasn’t Seeker or Forlorn, so the information must have come from somewhere else.

And yes, Mars’ motivation to work for Stratton are… a tad complex, and while there’s a certain belief of loyalty and service to the state, there’s more to it than that.

That’s an interesting theory! We should be learning more about the Broken King as the story progresses, so perhaps he’ll be discarded as a possibility… Or perhaps not.

The seething would’ve been fun boo! :ghost:

The text never says so but he went on about American values and whatnot when hating on Stratton so I made a connection, my fault for assuming BIG HOMIE

That makes so much sense, I spent hours looking for ‘messages’ behind Ignis’ rant before I settled on just seething my way thru her report.

@HWKEye @twenty_two We’ll be theorizing in WIP

I have a slight issue with this. The MC can decide to go off with Aki straight from the get-go and Aki suddenly misses her call or text from Forlorn while presumably still with the MC. I know Forlorn isn’t Nova but as a muscular watchtower, IMO he should be putting 2 and 2 together or start assuming the worst.

Even if he doesn’t notice it. He’s been trying to snap my MC like a chicken bone. Surely, now would be a nice time to finally find out why this new comer has found interest in his cousin :stuck_out_tongue:

OFC Mr. Steal-your-girl doesn’t view the MC as competition, he already won :fist:

@HWKEye @twenty_two yooooo

Yeah I sort of figured it would be a coding nightmare t incorporate it in but I had to ask anyways.
