A Study In Steampunk: Choice by Gaslight

AH! I loved this game. Just had to buy it when I saw who the author was, and no did you not disappoint. I played on android and had no problem with the save (multiple saves) options. The coding must have been a pain. (I played some of the same routes with different options to see how the characters responded to it. Very well done. ) Now… to continue unlocking achievements…

Oh dear lord, that ending.

What the hell, Woodward! I thought you were just going to have one of your guys shoot me. I didn’t expect you to have a supervillainish private army of mind-wiped vampire puppets, and oh god, how long have you been working on this project? Has the main character accidentally helped him Bucky Barnes someone when they thought they were just making a normal arrest?

I actually tried out the “Nope, I’m not gonna help you infiltrate Callahan’s organization, have fun with the invasion boys” route just to see if Woodward would have to use his secret weapons to fight off the invasion (and then we’d find out a lot more about what he’s been up to. Sadly, he doesn’t. So now I’ve just got a bunch of versions of what’s going to happen when Finch finds out running around at the back of my brain.

@Anya_A What are the specifics in each choice? Did you choose to only work on the map every time or ever go out and help the sick?

@EmperorHeartless I choose to only work on the map, ignoring every choices to go out and help the sick. It should only take you one day to finish the map if you choose to work on it full day.

@elementoflilium I know, right?! I think if we’ve ever accidentally Bucky Barnes someone without knowing, it could’ve been Jed. I think he still return in part 3 whether or not you turned him in to Woodward when he drank the wine (or is he?? Something weird absolutely happened behind the scene), but I do remember that after I turned Jed in, Woodward told me absolutely nothing! If he’s with the hospital, I still get an update that his power is fading and he seems to be addicted to the wine etcetc. But with Woodward I have no idea what he did to Jed. He seem to be… fine… in part 3. But to think about what could’ve happened creeped me out.

@Anya_A I hadn’t thought of that.

And if you give Woodward both Jed and the wine, you haven’t just given him a light-eater, you’ve given him the means to create more light-eaters with the formula in the wine. Now that’s scary.

Idea for a sequel perhaps?? Stopping Woodward plan and fighting light-eaters? winks winks

I also like to imagine what would happen If Bradley walk in on MC and Finch during a rather… intimate position. That would REALLY blow his mind. Give him a whole new perspective of the unstoppable team. (I adore Bradley, he really is a puppy.)

If there’s ever a sequel, I’d definitely want that to be part of it. Maybe even as part of a covert, steampunky arms race, where you have people who are trying to weaponize light-eaters, people who are trying to create technology that depowers or neutralizes light-eaters, and people who are using the fear on both sides to advance their own plans.

And yes, Bradley is adorable. :smile: I wish he’d gotten to do a little more. If he started learning a few more investigation-type skills, he’d be a lot like George from Murdoch Mysteries.

Ok I must admit this game was very nice. I joined the resistance but I will definitly try a serial killer path and just blow everything up. I wouldnt mind a sequel at all.

I loved this game :blush: It was wonderful, the setting, the story, the characters… the whole thing! Even the NPCs whose personality I didn’t like (Woodward, for example…) were kind of gray, they had some traits I could understand/accept. It has been a while since I last enjoyed a CoG (or HG) so much, and I must say, this is a masterpiece.

Finch is definitely my favourite character. I found his personality wonderful, whether we were on the same side or not. Though, I loved having the option to hit him/be mad at him. It made things more emotive and authentic, instead of just “Okay, I forgive you for these three miserable years” or “I will never forgive you”. I love him to pieces.

I have a question, though: when you go vigilante and don’t go to Woodward or Taggart, later on I see options like “what I am doing” or letting the soldier go because you don’t want to kill him, but they are grayed out. Why? What kind of stats do you need? And unless you kill Finch you can’t keep on being a light eater?

This is definitely worthy of five stars :star2::star2::star2::star2::star2:

Truly a great adventure. My hat’s off to the author!

At first, I wasn’t really sure about the Doctor background but I came to like it because it wasn’t forced down my throat all the time. I became entangled with the characters and their stories. The possible paths you’re able to take are sensible and there is quite a lot of them.

As I approached the end I feared that I won´t be able to achieve what I really wanted (to reform the Empire peacefully or from within) and be forced to take it over violently with the revolutionaries but fortunately that wasn’t the case.

Choice of Gaslight just became my second most loved choicescript game topped only by SOI.

Thank you for that.

The greyed out options are fake. At that point, you can’t stop yourself - you’ve become a slavering animal.

I love these kinds of choices that aren’t really choices. While I would also have liked to see a bigger variety of real, chooseable options in the light-eater path, this is such a unique kind of storytelling device that could only be done in this type of game. It’s wonderful to see it used so well and for such chilling effect.

I’ve got a question: Does Finch always “die” when fighting against the Prince’s steward?

I’m not totally sure, but I think the answer is probably yes. Just because the entire subsequent plot arc kind of depends on Finch being gone to make much sense. MC probably wouldn’t be nearly so tempted to join the healers/resistance/become a light eater if Finch were still around. Also, it’s pretty clearly based on one of the classic Sherlock Holmes stories where a similar thing happens.
Yeah, but the light-eater path is supposed to be a path where you die in the gutter after losing or destroying everything that you love.

It’s too bad that you can’t find out about what Woodward’s doing with light-eaters and expose him on any path when you’re not captured, though.
Hm, well if its whole presence in the narrative is really supposed to be about absolutely nothing else other than “press this button to go straight to a bad ending”, I actually think that could stand to be made a tad clearer. The fact that you actually are given options like turning yourself in to Taggart or Woodward, and that you can choose to undertake the work grimly at first and only kill legitimately awful people, made me wistful for further possibilities in that vein. It’s not so much the light-eating part I suppose (it’s of course clear that regardless of any good intentions, you just can’t sink that far and remain a good, sane person) as the fact that I would’ve really enjoyed being able to go it completely alone without having to shackle myself to the healers/resistance or else crawl back to Woodward. I suppose that was pretty much my only real gripe with the game, small one though it is.

I disagree about said bad ending, though ordinarily I would agree with you. Ultimately, the path wouldn’t work if it weren’t a trap. Addiction is like that, and the point of the story is to watch your character’s fall - even if there’s no good ending, seeing how you lose has pathos.

If there were to be an actual independent path, being an ordinary surgeon who keeps getting roped back into Woodward’s schemes would have been entirely appropriate, though.

Hey congrats on being 14th on the Apple RPG game charts! I haven’t seen many (any?) Hosted Games get that high!

Just to add on to what @Ramidel said

There’s also the fact that the MC isn’t trained in using his powers so it would make sense that, while he had good intention to hunt the bad, he quickly lost control over it as oppose to the Ripper and other light-eaters who seems to have some sort of control over his. If would be pretty cool to have a light-eater path that starts out as training with Taggert to have that control and then going rogue

@heather

Hey there, was wondering if I’ve somehow stumbled upon a combination of “unwinnable” stats.
MC’s athleticism is 85%, charisma 47%, healing 78%, marksmanship 50%, medicine 72%, and perception 67%. During the sabotage of the Rising, everything I try to do ends up failing, even with Alexandra on my side. Is there actually a way for me to sabotage the Rising successfully, or have I royally fucked myself over with these stats?

EDIT: I’ve tried about 5 or 6 times, by the way. So I’m pretty much out of options here. :P
