Zombien WIP Beta - Now with chapter 3

I played a little bit of it so far.

I’d repeat what I mentioned earlier. In those types of end of the world situations. It would be nice if your overall mission had more meaning. For example. Maybe you finally get a chance to sit with the girl next door who always thought you were awkward and impress her by rescuing her.

The story mentions some people you pass by. Where an option to save them exists. It have more of an emotional impact if you created a bond with some of those people a little more in depth…then they were put in danger. Then a choice to try to save them existed.

Also you get to pick five things you are good at. Five seems a little much. I’d lower it down to two then have certain situations where those skills could in handy if you picked them. It would add to the replay value if certain strengths helped you out of situations.

So far the choices on strength doesn’t have a big impact on the story or where you go. I would suggest more in depth conversations with people that come in your group. It feels a tad bit rushed.

That’s just my input.

Congrats on reaching beta, it really is a great feat to achieve as most games are just abandoned before they reach it :stuck_out_tongue:
Impressive work on the game aswell. Hopefully it gives you a huge payload :+1:

Thanks for the input. I’ll working out on fleshing out some of the characters in the first couple of chapters, but the majority of it still happens in chapter 4. I resisted too much character exploration as I feel it’s unrealistic that in an apocalypse type situation everyone you meet would feel compelled to tell you all about themselves on the same day you meet them. Before the end of Chapter 2 Sarah is really the only real NPC that you spend enough time with to get chatty. The others are gathered on the fly. If you choose to go back to them in chapter 4 you’ll get the chance to improve your relationship and learn more about them.

I’ll also look at making the choosing the stats clearer. You really only choose one stat you are great at, the others gain progressively lesswith each choice which just means you need to make more effort with your later choices to improve those skills. All of the stats and skills have an effect at some point in the game. Just not necessarily a large one in the first couple of chapters. Chapters 3 and 5 for example are much easier with high strength or agility. While 4 is easier for the fast and the intelligent.

I have to ask, is there a reason Rick is above James? Or was it pure coincidence that you made Rick James?

Sorry just a coincidence. I had to google who Rick James was…

Dang, thought I had caught a subtle reference there. :confused: oh well.

Anyway the game looks pretty well done. Though I’m a bit surprised that a soldier wouldn’t have a gun at his home when he packed his things and decided to bail or if he did he chose a survival knife instead of his gun.

@Razgriz That is an excellent point. I will add that in.

Sadly I don’t have anything useful to say other than that this is one of my favorite WiP’s. It’s not every day that one has the chance to face an alien induced zombie apocalypse. I wish you and this game the best of luck!

Zombien is going to be delayed a bit longer sadly. The consensus from both the COG beta testers and the ones from elsewhere was my decision to cut the working with the aliens arc due to time constraints was a bad decision. So I am in the process of adding it in. It’s a fair amount more work as it considerably adds to the volume of 4,5, and 6. It is possible to see the start of the arc as it begins in chapter 3. However there is not really enough to be worth asking for general help in 3. I hope to be done and in full beta again in a day or so, but I don’t want to rush it too much given the amount of interest in enslaving humanity. Also it is taking a bit longer as its unfamiliar territory. I never play games from the evil point of view, because I find I can never really get immersed in the story. It’s nice to have a bit of a challenge, although more sleep would also be good :frowning:

Great idea, to merge Zombies and Aliens on same story, it get ur story unique if u compare with most of games of this genre.

Hey, Just thought I would let people know that Zombien was submitted to COG a couple of weeks back. Many thanks to everybody that helped out. Hopefully people will like the finished product. Have already started writing the next story. Will be posting the teaser for it in a week or so :slight_smile:

It’s nice to see people are still reading it. Hopefully it will be joining the soon to be released list fairly shortly. If you choose to work against rather than with Xenon in chapter 4 then you’ll have the option to return to the place you left in chapter 2, and build or destroy your relationship with the people you left behind. On the other hand you can ditch them and just head off with Simon and Rachel if you feel like it. Those choices also make permanent changes to the story as it progresses all the way through to the end. I hope that’s enough options to make people feel like the story really belongs to them.

Also there are 15 endings, and if the book does reasonably well I might be persuaded to expand at a later date. Assuming people don’t just burn their copies…

but it isn’t that bad there was a thread about it and it seems to be fixable i don’t know much about ChoiceScript but for what i have read it seems to be a problem with the last version (Of ChoiceScript) so here’s the link I hope you can fix it:

Getting the same thing, I don’t know why it has been flagged for copyright. Unless the game is actually being made/produced which is a good thing I suppose.

Sorry the dropbox thing isn’t something I can sort out. Dropbox has flagged one of the basic files as copyrighted by COG, and has locked any file that relies on it. Jason knows about the problem, so basically all we can do is wait until dropbox gets the hint and reactivates all the WIPs.

That or we get sick of waiting and cancel our dropbox accounts and go with someone else.

There’s a fix, I think:

Apologies for the delay in getting Zombien back up again. When I first saw the problem I assumed it would fix it’s self once COG contacted dropbox, and then promptly forgot about it…

Oh well, hopefully it shouldn’t be too long before the full version comes out so you can find out how it ends… well some of the ways it ends. Unless you blow up the world then you won’t know much of anything. (Yes that is possible…)
