What is your favorite antagonist/villain of all time and why?

I’d love to know if you have textual references for that reading that the dwarves, for example, will vanish over time. (I mean, I know all of the species we learn about in the stories decline over time–I guess dwarves may fade out after the events of LOTR, but I mean, any specific references.) I know the elves are passing away from the world and returning to the West, but they aren’t gone. They’re just in Valinor.

It’s funny–does Tolkien’s world really have a notion like “magic beings”? As in, elves are magic, dwarves are magic, but humans aren’t magic? Elves have art, which is their particular faerie magic (I’m thinking of Tolkien’s “On Faerie Stories” here) but are they, you know, magic beings a la D&D? I’m not convinced of that.

I don’t think I’ve ever quite heard anyone arguing that Sauron is the hero of the piece. I think that’s a stretch.

My favorite villain is Vergil from Devil May Cry 3
I think he was a great character and I really enjoyed playing as him in Special Edition’s (DMC3 and DMC4).
What I like about him is just how cool is his design and overall writing of his character. He has clear motivation. And he will sacrifice anything to achieve it even his own brother (humanity also).
But I have several antagonist’s I just want to mention:
Sovereign from Mass Effect 1 really impressed me at that time. His voice actor is just so cool and I think he was heavily inspired by inspired by Lovecraft (love him);
GLaDOS from Portal series, of course. (I don’t need to list reason’s I suppose)
Andrew Ryan from Bioshock: “A man chooses, a slave obeys!”
SHODAN from System Shock 2. AI level of cleverness indeed.
That’s for game’s, now for films, anime and etc. :
Darth Vader (of course);
O’Ren from Kill Bill (Ahh, Tarantino villains. O’Ren has a hard backstory and Lucy was very charismatic when she played her)
HAL9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey (It’s a really boring film in some parts but I recommend watching for those who are interested in “AI gone wrong”(HAL’s voice is so calm and soothing tho)
Aizen Souske from Bleach ((I only read and watch this show because of him) He is a real badass in terms of planning everything ahead and his hypnosis combined with his personality gives him a one superior plus in terms of strength)

You/Darth Revan from Star Wars: The Knights of the Old Republic

Meruem from Hunter x Hunter (he is stronger and smarter than most of the characters and if not for a nuke and a radiation nothing would stop him from turning all of humanity into his meal)
Joker from Dark Knight; (I guess that’s also not needed to list)
Jigsaw from Saw series (Some cool ways to dispatch the society of criminals. He is someone you would feel genuinely sorry for (his backstory))
The Lich from Adventure Time (like Toffee when he arrives show instantly becomes dark. He is definetly someone to give you nightmares (also seems to inspired by Lovecraft (in context of the Gold Star episode)
Toffee from Star vs. Forces of Evil (he is intelligent and serious in that cartoon and most of very interesting moment happens when he arrives(show also become pretty dark when he arrives))
Evil Morty from Rick and Morty; (I am not sure he is an antogonist to the main characters but whatever. He is smart (and in the contex of outsmarting Rick’s that’s mean a lot) and cunning and mystery around him is very intriguing.)

I think a lot of my favourite villains happen to be tragic mad scientist types. Doctor Octopus,Mister Freeze, Davros, Doctor Gero…

I love Kingpin as played by Vincent D’Onofrio in Daredevil. He has the right blend of class, quiet charm and animalistic brutality in one. The Netflix Marvel villains are easily some of the best the MCU has, likely because they get more screen time and characterisation.

I sadly don’t have textual for the dwarfs. I’m basing it mostly off situational hints. Although if anything it’s likley that they wouldn’t be as effected as the other races since they were not even part of the original plan and they don’t have magic as a major function of their existence.

Well I actually don’t remember any true blood humans have magic. All the wizards are basically lowest tier angels that got too close to humanity to remain pure, “besides Gandalf”, and all the other magic users are using a different beings power to do magic.
I think the whole point of magic is that it’s part of the people who use it so it’s not so much magic as it is they have an extra way of interacting with the world that acts almost exactly like magic

Oh no, I don’t mean to say he was a hero in the slightest. He mind controlled and destroyed multiple races. I’m only saying that he basically was the only reason magic was left since he put almost all of his soul into the material world via the ring that acted as an anchor for magic to exist.

I really loved Warlord Apollyon from For Honor. Her whole “Age of Wolves” approach to really bringing out the worst, most primal aspect of humanity and ultimately making it come to fruition really struck me at the time. I really hope they end up doing more with the lore.

In PC games, my favourite antagonist had to be Sarah Kerrigan from Star Craft, the Queen Of Blades and Queen of the Swarm, well it was told that in the War between Human , Swarm and Protos, she led the Swarms and slaughtered “millions” of human alone, although that was a war and it was the swarm armies who did that, but the death count fall on her alone…

Even as the major Antagonist of the universe, she does hold an undivided love towards the protagonist Jim Reynor , and for rescuing Jim from the Terran Empire , she committed more killing of human race …but that was to rescue Jim and the Emperor himself was a villain as well…
Great to know there is a happy ending for Sarah and Jim in the end

In Novel, that would be Alice Deane , although whether she is an antagonist is up to debate… Alice is a powerful witch who fall in love with Tom Ward, a witch hunter…

In CoG… my favourite Antagonist is of course Prodigal , i don’t like the Hero Rise Saga …but somehow i like the major Antagonist Prodigal , i meant the original Prodigal for reasons that had already been much discuss previously

I majorly like Revan from the knights of the old republic mainly because of the huge twist.
My real FAVOURITE is obviously joker he acts all crazy but really he’s actually really smart and if joker wasn’t “crazy” then Batman wouldn’t be alive.

Probably Garou from OPM. He is basically an anti-hero who faced off the heroes and monsters in the story who themselves were currently at war against one another.

Handsome Jack from Borderlands jumped to mind right away. He’s just too fun. And the glee with which my ten year old niece blew him away at the end of that game warmed my tiny black heart.

Ooh how about Caleb from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Creepy, evil, sexy(what), Nathan Fillion(oh) preacher man. Yes please.

How about Kai Leng from Mass Effect 3? I never want to be heard saying anything nice about that game, but my god did I enjoy finally killing that guy.

Kreia . from kotor 2 . She blow the star wars to a new high and nobody can rival that in my eyes . No dark Lord of the wuss would rival what she was .

from Naruto the manga :

Madara Uchiha : Cose he is a class A D-bag . Love to hate him .

orochimaru : Cose he was SO MUCH FUN! and so creepy ! Hate what they done with him though nowdays .

Xenomorph Queen : Cose unlike the soldier , she is unique and doesn’t change in any of the movie . And she still is badass after all these years .

Gus Fring from Breaking Bad comes to mind.
His disciplined way of acting makes him the real Kingpin of Albuquerque in the show.

Dunno if anyone remembers this show called teen titans (not the new teen titans go the original teen titans). But the show altogether was pretty amazing and the main antagonist slade was pretty badass

Frank from Once Upon a Time in the West. One of the most evil guys of western. But also a tragic figure caught between the time of gunslingers and big corporations. What I like about him is,he wanted to make it to the new age,but defeated by other gunslingers who fought(directly or indirectly) for the new generations, similar fate to Liberty Valance but highly self-awared.Then instead of moving on he decided to go back the old way, fought and die like a truely evil gunslinger.
Roy from Blade Runner.Or is he the true protagonist?Either way,he’s a poet. Not only talk like one,but live like one

Kylo Ren. I guess he’s not a complete protagonist but I think everything about him is so unbelievably edgy and cool. Cool helmet, cool outfit, cool voice and cool lines. The real tragedy in episode 8 wasn’t Luke, it was Kylo’s helmet :sob: He’s really conflicted between the light and dark and probably the best thing about the new films. Adam Driver plays him perfectly.

Vegeta from dragonball Z(he doesn’t transition into an anti hero until later on, so it counts!). He’s the best because his personality is really fun to watch, his look is amazing and so is his voice, oh and of course his music, just like all music from DBZ is awesome. Oh and of course, most importantly it would be easy(at first when he’s still a villain) to dismiss him as a monster, unredeemable, evil etc. But as he develops we see that he didn’t really have a choice, he never did, and as soon as life gives him one he takes it and starts transitioning into an anti hero…Just like me…I’ve done a lot of evil shit, no really. But I never got support as a child, as a teenager, not until I was an adult. I’ve been judged a lot, for various reasons, but one is because of my immoral actions. And just like with Vegeta, you could dismiss me as evil, it’s much, much harder to try and understand, to empathise with me(at least it was, I’m nicish now after finally getting support :stuck_out_tongue: ) . I said recently in another thread that for me DBZ isn’t a show, it’s a way of life…And it’s true, thanks to vegeta more than anything, but the show overall. When shit was bad as a child, when I was suicidal and got into fights literally all the time…and other stuff DBZ was one thing that really, really helped.

I second Azula from Avatar:TLA. She was a horrible villain but also one of the most tragic ones I have ever encountered.

Another one of my favourites is Callisto from Xena. She was insane in a fun way and I think Hudson Leick really did the character justice, even though I felt the way it all ended was strange and awful. (I mean, really, Callisto turns into an angel and then reincarnates into Xena’s daughter. I know the show was kinda trashy, but come on.)

Angel seems nice , but i didn’t get a full story regarding her yet … well, hopefully Angel also has a heart warming , touching interaction with us in the full story hehehe

but currently as it stance, Prodigal was our secret admirer who started to "watch over us " since we are both still very small, if i am not mistaken she already think of us everyday when she was still a kid … Prodigal basically “guided” our entire life till the very end…

I do hope Angel will be as attached to us as Prodigal …hehehe , i really did put both Angel and Bobbi into consideration for CoG , Angel of course still has a chance to beat Prodigal for my favourite Antagonist in Cog :-)
