On the subject of race I am curious… given how most games give the option of choosing your race, how many have it actually mean anything in game? I can only think of Choice of the Vampire doing so…

I think their was miscommunication here. Major games on here treat gender and sexuality as check in box that normal crammied into the story for the sake of the brand of IF game my frustration is come off Stale And husk to me. Not particularly controversial as I can’t imagine anyone will disagree with me here but I really loathe it when my MC is given some kind of mandatory crush or past romance. Especially when my MC has kids. 
As an ace and a grey-aro it really takes me out of my character completely. I can think of four official games off the top of my head guilty of that to some degree.
It’s also a bit annoying when I’m told how I feel about a character in general honestly.

Or Mother Superior of a massively influential convent. I love a woman that manages the estate of a powerful Lord because her husband’s constantly way of being the de facto Lord of that lands. Sisters running their own Homestead on the Oklahoma Frontier and starting their own business etc. You guys ignore these stories for the sake of power fantasy I want something genuine.
Right, you’re saying that’s a negative, as someone subject to have low levels of power and wealth ownership in society, I’m saying it’s a positive. I’m not looking for more representation of that reality in my games. Gender is 1000% a check box. And should be. So there’s no miscommunication, there’s just disagreement.
People vote with their dollars, so if more non-power fantasy games sold well, we’d produce more of them.
Counterpoint: in Dragon Age Origins. If you play a male city elf you get knocked out and left behind. If you play a female elf you get knocked out and taken for unsavory reasons. Which makes it that much more satisfying when you get a sword and turn the evil humans into ground beef imo. I feel if you make a game where women/other races are disrespected you should be able to rise higher and kick more ass and gain more respect than a white male hetero hero. Like if you’re oppressed and save the world it Should get you a parade and upend that societies norms. Making the world better for future generations. If you play a vanilla white straight guy you get a pat on the back for doing what people expect of you that’d be fun to read.
I don’t want to read story were women are forced to marry guys twenty years older and have kids they dont want while their husbands hve the power to beat them to death. I don’t have to se it as fantasy as i could see them in the street’s. All you can see is women being mistreated in news etc. Same for gays or umbrella.
It doesn’t have to be a power fantasy for instance @Samuel_H_Young last book is not a power fantasy, and he made agreat point of positive equality.
You could make a story of a doctor or a musician and being gender positive… But that doesn’t sell most gamers
