Warlock City: Shadow of the Shroudwalker

@gvyn
Ha! That was one heck of a bug. Thanks so much for picking up that particular bug because looking at the coding, it was a super rare one! Somehow, in one instance where you choose your familiar’s gender I’d set it so that female gave her the nickname “boy” and the male familiar got the nickname “girl”. Not sure how I managed to do that that so its great that you picked it up!

@soprano
Thanks for reading and the kind words! I can’t believe you managed to find a sentence with two spelling mistakes in it. I should be ashamed. :disappointed_relieved: And that bug is now fixed! I hope it didn’t set you back too far.

I really enjoy your writing style; the story line is also great! I was quite disappointed when the demo ended. I can’t wait for the next update! Do you have an idea of how long this story will be?

This is a magically good and interesting project! Well written and easily immersive, I was surprised by how skillfully crafted this is. I wish you good luck in your efforts to continue this project. I am very eager to see what you will do with it next.

There’s nothing more flattering then people wanting more, so thank you sincerely for that! The story is going to cover 3 books in the end. Both so that I can have a good amount of fun in the setting and also because I have a clear picture of the overarching mystery involving your dream, the origins of the Shroud and things you haven’t encountered yet. The first book is really about just introducing the world and its lore in a fun way! As for the length of this particular book, I can’t really say unfortunately (i.e. I thought I was going to be able to explain a lot more in Chapter 3, but instead got absorbed just playing with the student angle). However, there’s still a lot to go and scenes I can’t wait to explore (the show scene has me giddy)!

@Tinyblake
Again, I love to see people keen so thank you very much for your words! I do enjoy tales where magic is, while magic, somewhat comprehensible. So I’m going to try hard to ground it in its own rules and go back and modify scenes as I clarify in my mind just how far those rules can be pushed.

chuckles aloud I admit that the moment I read that she isn’t a blood relative, I instantly figured she would be a RO for the protagonist. Reminds me of Fire Emblem Fates where you had your siblings, both adoptive and supposely blood relatives, as RO’s. But don’t worry, they are not really your blood relatives, even though you are supposed to think that they are throughout the whole game, but you were conveniently born in separation from their own lineage by a contrivance of the story just so you can bed them with a ‘clear conscience’.

It was all rather amusing, if nothing else. chuckles

Haha! Yup. I knew going in that the fact that she wasn’t related by blood may bring up some RO issues. I mainly went with it because that way I can describe her features without necessarily affecting the MC’s perception of themselves. It also brings up some cool story beats and I’ve always liked the idea of family that’s family not because of blood but something deeper.

Thanks! I have lots of fun writing it so I’m glad that that’s coming through!

I don’t even…know how. No one even tagged you in! Mentioning Melany as an RO just kind of summons you like some kind of demon…:joy:

Just finished the demo and I quite enjoyed it, even if it was a bit short. I loved the jokes, particularly the Finnish one that had me involuntarily laughing more than it should have, and the nasty little trick we do to Charlie too. I kinda feel bad about that, but hey, he will certainly ace that test tomorrow. :grin: It was charming and fun, and I do like charm and fun, both in media like books and in people; the appalling but oddly endearing jokes in the stats screen… chuckles

The mix of superheroes and magic actually makes for interesting dynamics, and seems to work well. The use of magic was interesting to see, however briefly, and it would be good to find out the depths of our capabilities with magic.

Good work so far, @Revache. I certainly look forward to any of your updates. :smile:

Yeh, it was tough! But I actually feel super liberated despite losing what seemed like such great work. I think I just need to make sure that I recognize the need to get rid of things sooner next time so that I don’t get so stuck again.

@GenericGem
I don’t want to pick favourites, but choosing the Mäkinen and then teaching Charlie a lesson is definitely one of the branches I enjoy most. I plan on going back to sections like that one once I’ve fully figured out the stats so you don’t have to be as mean if you don’t want to be and maybe take a more personalized approach.

I’m sorry it felt short but I’ll take that as a compliment! I’ve been branching the choices out a fair bit so it feels long when writing it, but the single playthroughs are definitely much quicker. :laughing:

It would be good if we could inspire Charlie to see just how amazing that magic is, and how lucky he is to be gifted with the abilities to use it. We saw a flicker of that inspiration, for just a moment, when you summoned the book into your hand. But it died all too quickly. You have to wonder what he has been taught to have developed such aggressive apathy towards something anyone else would view as a wonder. :thinking:

Yeah, I have encountered this problem as well. We write a lot in regards to story arcs, but, when playing through it, it presents as being rather short. Some writers whose works I have read tend to fill up chapters with generally pointless, inane conversations and descriptions that are just laborious to go through since they add nothing to the story. Instead, I have filled my work with little stories, ones laced with hints and teasers of later events; keeping them interesting and relevant to the story.

With your character being a powerful wisard, there is no end of stories you could draw upon as fillers, and with your humour they would naturally be fun to read through. :wink:

If you follow down the “choose your own ward path” or “give him a break after the Mäkinen” you get to see that he does enjoy magic when it isn’t being dictated to him. Unfortunately, wizardry school and his mother are a little overbearing and that robs the fun for him. You’ll definitely slowly be able to become the inspiration he needs to be an incredible wizard!

@Logan3000x
I see what you did there.

I also noticed the cat familiar gets named Lucy before we have an option to pick names.

Hoho, cheers! Both problems fixed (I think).

Hey @Revache Just finished playing the updated demo and this is a game that I can’t wait to play since its a great mixture of both urban fantasy as well as superhero fiction. I’ve got to ask if our MC could become a hero (Ala Doctor Strange) as I know that the magical community seems to want to remain secret at all cost and if the the MC were so inclined could this lead to conflict with the arcane council especially we encourage our apprentice into becoming a hero?

Thanks for the interest! This is tough to go into without spoiling too much. Let’s just say that you’ll definitely have “collisions” with the super hero world and the local papers will be all too happy to publish stories about you which may cause conflict with the council. I don’t want to go into much more detail than that but how you end up interacting with super heroes is definitely one of the funner aspects of the story, so I hope you enjoy!
