Villain Intern (WIP 30k)

Hey COG forum!! I’m psyched to finally be putting out out THE DEMO for Villain Intern, where you play as an aspiring supervillain interning at a legacy criminal corporation.

Start from the bottom and navigate a world where everyone has it out for you, leveraging your strange superhuman abilities and your knack for manipulation. Make a name for yourself as an executive villain (with your own swanky corner office!), or turn against your higher-ups and usurp the company,…or throw away your promising career for the greater good or whatever.

Powers and Customization

Choose from two different ability trees. Play as either a homemade cyborg with (painful looking) mechanical augmentations of your own design, or a genetically mutated freak with mysterious, bizarre abilities derived from animal genes. Choose 3 of the 9 unique abilities available for each power type, which update (or mutate) to scale as you get stronger. Climb walls, perfectly mimic any voice, rotate your head 360 degrees, talk to the AI assistant in your brain, etc etc!

As a rule, you start out villainous, but whether you’re charming or sinister, sniveling or demanding, and backstabbing or frontstabbing is up to you.

Key Characters and Relationships

Relationship progression tracks two major stats- your connection with a character, and your rivalry, which are not mutually exclusive. So you can romance your greatest nemesis, backstab your closest friend, that kind of thing. Or both at once, with the same person, even!

Fellow Interns:

Peter Hyde is your cubicle neighbor, a geeky slackoff who’s fond of novelty ties. Unlike you, Peter doesn’t really want to be here, but he seems for some reason unable to quit. Laid-back, conflict avoidant, and generally easy to manipulate, he’s easy minion material for the MC- but his attitude belies a volatile, monstrous secret. Which can be a great asset or a major risk, depending on if you can maintain your control over him.

T9-670 is a seven-foot tall ex-war machine. Once a military member conscripted to UnderHand’s private security decal, its contract didn’t end when it died- the soldier’s brain was transplanted into a humanoid steel frame with a dark glass plate for a face- a la Daft Punk, or an empty Halo suit. T9 is doing some soul searching- it’s not totally sure if it even has one left, but it would like to have a purpose beyond fixing printers and mowing down UnderHand’s enemies with its plasma gun.

Dr. Dr. Elaine Foster is an up-and-coming mad scientist, assistant to the esteemed Dr. Shrink. Don’t bring up the fact that she has two doctorates and is still an intern. She’s a genius prodigy, but otherwise has no superhuman abilities, which causes her to be overlooked by your superiors. Passionate and inscrutable, she’s obsessed with making it to the top her own way, and will remain one step ahead of you if you aren’t careful.

Reid/Reney Sullivan (gender selectable, nb included) is your nemesis, or at least they think so. They’re employed by OverSight, the subsidized hero-corporation that works in tandem with the government. An interning hero with impressive telekinetic powers, they are nonetheless as much of an amateur as you, and so you find yourself on even footing with one of the most promising superheroes in the business. Earnest and witty, they genuinely just want to help people. Eventually, they become fixated on “figuring you out”, which can lead to them getting sucked into your schemes. That, or their meddling could be your downfall. Worst of all, they might even succeed in reforming you.

There’s also Blink , a rogue superhuman- some say vigilante, others say independent villain. Completely anonymous, they wear a unique suit of tactical gear that allows them to turn completely invisible, the first of its kind. Quippy, chipper, and sauntering, they tend to use their powers for ridiculous, showy things like popping up behind newscasters on TV. An invisible superhuman that loves the spotlight, Blink is full of contradictions. And secrets, big ones, that pertain to you.

… plus a cast of older, more established villains and heroes- including The Man , UnderHand’s enigmatic CEO. A faceless, hollow man in an empty suit. Actually, nobody’s ever seen anything but the suit, so he might just be the suit.

Featuring...

Get thrown out of a moving van, kill and replace your boss, be in a codependent relationship with your henchman, sleep under your desk, conduct self-surgery, ride suspicious elevators, do nefarious paperwork. Have illicit late night phone calls with your nemesis. Fake being reformed for your own personal gain. Change superhumanity for the better, even as a villain. There is no typical “true” heroic route- work toward selfish or constructive goals from either side of the conflict.

🕱 STATUS: Villain Intern is currently on Chapter One: Onboarding as of 9/8/24, sitting at just over 30,000 words. I’m especially looking for feedback on:

  • Typos and bugs (always :face_with_spiral_eyes:)
  • Early thoughts and speculations. How would you like to see this play out?
  • First impressions on the character cast

This project is in the early stages right now, but the game’s full plot map is complete. Ideally, I’ll update every 2-3 weeks- I’ll post a more fleshed-out development schedule after I gage initial interest. Thanks for checking this out >:) ← (evil smile)

Wow, I’m so excited! Thanks for sharing your demo with us, your premise sounds interesting and I’m excited to give it a shot. I’ll let you how I feel about it when I finish!

Off to good start. I assume the stats menu isn’t done yet which why the error message pop up happened when I pressed it

Whups, that’s just a little code error. Fixed, stats are up! I also fixed an indenting issue that futzed up a conversation in Chapter 1. Demo is normal and operable now :crossed_fingers:

I played it and loved it!

I chose to be a cyborg but the other option looked neat too.

I love Hyde the most so far. I think the moment that clinched for me when he unplugged his phone to take a break. And his dino tie. He’s such a dweeb, I love him.

Caught my interest pretty much instantly. Love the demo so far as well, I will be watching this one with great interest lol can never go wrong with a Villain IF Love the animal/ genoid mutant path but the cyborg route looks just as interesting for a second mc I might play with.

Sounds super awesome! Can’t wait to see how it develops! Best of luck on your creation!

I don’t know why i find this funny in good way

Glad to hear it!! Hyde is a lot of fun to write. I love inventing new ways for the player to be mean to him lol

Reid is so cute!

It’s not easy for me to find interest in superhero/supervillain types of stories but look, you got me hooked pretty instantly with “be a homemade cyborg or have some weird mutated animal genes.” Now that is a skill tree I want to see every little piece of and will replay as many times as it takes to do so! Also: robots with dubious human souls is about the quickest way to my heart. Singularity here I come, arms open to hug every. single. robot.

Made notes as I went. I hope they are helpful. And I did keep your questions in mind as I considered my feedback.

Won’t call it a first impression yet obviously, but I’m most looking forward to meeting T9 and Sullivan. I love me an antagonistic but begrudgingly appreciative relationship of any sort lol.

I immediately love the tone here. Chef’s kiss.

“Frontstabbing” might be the best, funniest opposed stat I have ever seen.

[Your open bribery, thinly veiled antagonism, and relentless eye contact greatly cowed our interviewers and intrigued our admissions team.] Listen. Listen here. Incredible. This whole letter. Excellent–and hilarious–details. Jesus christ. Mojo Jojo take the wheel.

Oh my god my implant is an oversharer! Wonderful! As per your question: “Early thoughts and speculations. How would you like to see this play out?” If the voice in my head becomes even remotely sentient, I cannot wait to have a bickering friendship with it. That is likely too much work for the small possible percentage of players who would see it but it would be fun.

I don’t normally say this but the character creation really worked for me. It was well-integrated and flowed nicely.

rogue code: [41 accredited kills line_break ██████████@henchmail.███] this is in the first email I opened at my desk where Caroline tells me about tomorrow’s assignment

I really wanted to be able to follow through the iguana thing on the search bar. :sob:

What does it say about the state of my life, the state of our world, that this office type shit is making me anxious in such a familiar way? Damn.

T9! T9! T9! T9! I will befriend this geth robobrain robocop career changing brain having robot!

Dr. Shrink is great. “I’ve got a list of all the good ones!” One item list. Shoots you immediately. Enjoys dad jokes. Hell of a goose, this man.

Rogue code when the helicopter pilot asks for my (custom) alias. Can see the ! for capitalizing. Probably just easier to *set aliasvar = “$!{aliasvar}” immediately when the player inputs the name. Just a thought.

Rogue code again when I try to trip up the bag at the first assignment: [!he must know who you work for.] and [You’d better get the ball rolling before !they sprint off.] Also the whole section is filled with incorrect verb tenses for the selected gender. Someone has a quick and easy set up for dealing with pronouns and verb tenses in CSIDE but I cannot for the life of me remember who wrote it. It should be easy enough to find through search though.

[ “Sorry to disappoint, but I really gotta run, so-” “Run where?” you call ] Need a paragraph break between the dialogue there.

Overall impression: I love it and I’m excited to play more, which is rare for me for this particular genre. Your prose is hilarious, concise in a way that reflects the setting well, and just descriptive enough to be useful without being boring. Most of my “issues”, if you can even call them that, are code cleanup and that’s easy enough. Really glad you shared and looking forward to more!

Right away I just fell in love with this; the bite in your narrative voice and sense of humor just hit beautifully and remind me a bit of author Jonathan L. Howard in his Johannes Cabal the Necromancer series (it’s kind of an obnoxiously specific and possibly niche reference, but I’m rereading one of the books in that series, so it’s at the forefront of my thoughts).

The stats you’ve chosen and how you’ve flavored them really stand out as well and help reinforce the setting and the tone you’re going for. It’ll take some more playtime to get a full impression of how they actually play, but I enjoyed the options for the initial stat and character customization for the cyborg MC.

I had this exact thought, lol.

You really have a way with introducing characters that’s tight and effective and each one leaves a distinct impression. I love them all.

Character Impressions

Caroline Wasp is a manic corporate nightmare. Also, her name is Wasp. I can’t remember the last character I felt was so aptly named.

I’m definitely invested in learning what Hyde’s deal is - he seems too unassuming to actually be unassuming. I mean… those ties.

I find characters like T9-670 that straddle the line of human and inhuman really compelling, so I’m looking forward to seeing more of them. It feels like the classified mission they were once a part of is the set up for something, either for their own arc or something in the main, overarching plot.

Dr. Moreau makes a hell of a first impression on a cyborg MC, haha. I also really loved how Moreau and Hyde had a weird little routine that the MC was very much on the outside of in that introductory scene. I’ve been wondering what that was all about ever since.

Dr. Shrink is diabolical. He’s fun.

Doctor Doctor Foster comes off as competent in a way that will prove terrifying if you get on her bad side; I liked her immediately. And finally, we didn’t see much of them, but I want to see that “rivalry” dynamic play out with Sullivan. I already know that my MC will have no patience for it (although I’ll find it entertaining).

Will eventually replay with a different sort of MC to see more of the full spectrum of possibilities. Maybe next time I won’t get my ass handed to me on the 4th floor :upside_down_face:

Playing as an unrepentant villain isn’t my usual thing, but this makes it all very fun and I’m very excited to see where this goes!

Thanks tons, this is great feedback!! For your efforts I added an iguana easter egg to the search bar :lizard:

I’m happy someone tried out the neurocomputer, I actually plan to do a lot of flavor text for that guy and the other powers besides. Like, for however many times the implant chimes in, the dog-nosed genoid MC is describing some smell lol. I think those two have the most extra text so far, but all of the less combat-based powers will get their own side content.

On that note, it’s good that you like dubiously sentient robots because there are. So many of those in this. T9 is by far the friendliest though so I’m glad you’re hitting it off.

Your code notes are also super useful, I’ll go thru and sand those down. Thx again for your interest, more to come soon!!

Shucks, you’re too kind- and I will be checking out your specific niche novel reference! It does seem like my thing.

Caroline Wasp’s name is a double entendre- she’s an an aggressive worker drone and also extremely White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (lol). Her supervillain identity and powers are also very literally waspy. Dr. Shrink has a pun name too, he’s a mad psychologist. And if you follow that logic with Hyde it might clue you in to what his deal is… :eyes:

Thanks for taking an early look at this!!

Curious if you can actually get upgraded abilities if the mc is smart enough or has enough influence with the geneticist or robotics scientist. Would be pretty cool if my geniod mc can literally make himself into even more of an animal.

Ha! Glad to know my instincts were onto to something. I think that will be a fun discovery.

You made it very easy. And I really do recommend: it’s one of my favorite series. A little acerbic, a bit macabre, and very funny.

Rotate my head 360 degrees and climb walls? now i have to try this lol

Very interesting so far! I’m liking where this seems to be headed.

Also, I’m running into a crash when setting my alias:
1_onboarding line 942: Invalid use of curly smart quote: ” Use straight quotes " instead

I like it, given you can go for plastic surgery and look something like this:

As a consequence an artsy robot with flair comes to mind (this one is borrowed by league of legends, Jhin vs Camille, now I don’t use a toilet gaming chair so i’m hardly lol demography, i have a reputation to maintain after all).

Beyond that, there may be a bug at the page where you select an alias, it says something akin to “invalid use of curly smart quotes, use straight ones instead”.

Adding to that, when talking about what type of genoid you are if you select the “i’m kind of a grab-bag” option the response is a little bit bugged
