Thx! Fixed
Looks interesting, I especially like the ability tree thing.
Can you add save slots
Also, thanks for putting me on to the tense issues! Turns out, in a genius move on my part, I was accidentally using the MC’s plural settings for R.
Oh definitely! I have a list of “upgraded” powers planned out based on your starting set. About halfway through, genoid MCs will mutate new abilities and cyborg MCs will have the opportunity to tinker on themselves with new tech.
Good rep with the science leads will also bring a couple of unique bonuses, but it might not be worth involving yourself with them. They are crazy and evil.
For sure planning on it. The next demo update will have saves.
Regarding the science leads the desire of looking more feline and deadly outweigh any risk lol.
Found a bug, if you check your stats while talking the Doctor around the part where she ask about your genus, you restart the chapter.
Can’t get past the part where im on the computer with the email, underweb stuff. How to proceed from there?
Wacky supervillain comedies are right up my alley and I love this already – you nailed the tone and humor.
Early thoughts:
- I love the ████████ █████ in the documents, but you might consider implementing a text only mode to make things more accessible for players using screenreaders. E.g.,
regrettably @{screenreader_mode REDACTED|████████████} from orbit
. - I’m not a huge fan of being switched to the black background at the start of the game. Some games do this as a narrative effect (e.g., to denote a flashback sequence, to represent characters entering a dark environment), but as it doesn’t ever switch back, it seems like an aesthetic effect rather than a narrative one. When it is purely for aesthetics, I prefer matters of UI be left to the player’s discretion. But it’s not a big deal since it can be changed back in the settings.
- If you’re planning on publishing through Hosted Games though, you probably won’t be able to use any
*script
commands. - Some preselected names and surnames would be nice, with some humorous surname options in the vein of the other characters’ punny/indicative/humorous surnames.
- A+ stats – they convey the tone and are fitting and interesting qualities for a supervillain. If I had to nitpick, I think it would look better if they were all capitalized or all uncapped; I personally think capitalized stats look neater.
- The descriptions are evocative without being wordy. I can easily picture a reception with an “inhospitable wooden bench and two forgettable ferns” or “Throngs of people speed walk[ing] to meetings with arms full of printer-hot documents and manila envelopes”.
- I am psyched one of the animal powers is lyrebird mimicry. From the description in game, I’m guessing you’ve seen the (or at least a) video of a lyrebird mimicking a car alarm and chainsaw? Lyrebirds are so cool.
First impressions of the characters:
- Peter seems nice, but with a last name like Hyde you just know he’s got to be hiding something. +1 for novelty ties.
- Caroline Wasp is a wonderfully terrible person and aptly named. I look forward to seeing just how awful she will be in the future.
- Not sure what to make of T9 yet.
- All of the scientists seem very intelligent in an appropriately mad scary science sort of way.
- Dr. Shrink: +1 for rambling about the old days.
- So far I noticed the male characters (Peter, Dr. Shrink) seem to be more laid back and jokey while the female characters (Wasp, Dr. Moreau, Dr. Dr. Foster) seem more serious and intense. Hoping some of the later characters shake up that dynamic. Even so, all the characters are distinct and enjoyable. As a player, I like everyone but trust no one.
Bugs
1_onboarding line 942: Invalid use of curly smart quote: “Use straight quotes " instead
when choosing Splice as an alias and didn’t get further than that.
Did you try to copy and paste the web address Caroline Wasp emailed to you in the UnderWeb search bar?
Oh I didn’t know I was supposed to do that. Thank you.
No worries, took me a few seconds to think of that myself.
QUILLPENNNNN!!! LET US EVENTUALLY UPGRADE OUT NEURALINK INTO A JARVIS/CORTANA-ESQUE SARCASTIC SENTIENT AI COMPANION, AND MY LIFE IS YOURS…!!!
I wish I could have the regen to go along with the shark teeth and eagle eyes, that way I’d have a defensive power, an offensive power and an utility power.
Claw, Shark teeth and eagle eyes isn’t a bad combination but Claw and Teeth are a bit redundant.
Hope we’ll be able to get some leg mutations later too, that way I’d have the full set of legs, hands and head.
Hey. Literally just started reading this and there seems to be a bug - I can’t change background from dark to sepia, whenever I press “return to game” it just changes the background color to dark every time. Not a big problem, or anything like that, but it is a bit annoying. It only happens on the first page, though, the next one doesn’t seem to have that problem and on restart it switches back to dark, so there’s probably a code line on the first page that switches background to dark. I’m not a coder, so I don’t know how to fix this minor bug.
It’s a villain simulator, so everything is dark, and disreputable by law-enforcing standards, in other words black. Coincidence? I believe not. Thus, logically, choosing sepia is racist
Lol, it’s funny how I’m having essentially the same regret as yours, but on the cyborg route.
Neuralink and Knife Hands are my go-to/main build at for the moment(the AI for the utility and extra text/info, and Knife Hands for the offensive because what’s not to love about KNIFE HANDS).
I really wish I could have gotten the Infrared sensor/boot-leg spidey-sense to combo with the previous two though, as that would give my character a defensive perk as well. Crossing my fingers that later on we can somehow upgrade or maybe add in one or more of the starting perks when we get experienced enough!
Thanks sm for your thoughts!! It seems like people would rather choose whether to switch to darkmode themselves, so I do think I’ll be taking out the *script command. Screenreader accessibility is also definitely super important to me for the final release. After ch1 is finished and mostly finalized I’ll go back and make it screenreader friendly, and so on going forward. So screenreader updates will roll out one chapter behind the demo. (Reason being, I rewrite a lot of stuff initially and want to make sure the chapter is pretty much locked in before writing a lotta alternate text.)
It’s cool that people are into the lyrebird powers! They’re kind of a niche, less conventionally badass animal, so I’m glad you see the vision. And thx for the character feedback, I love hearing peoples impressions of my guys, it helps me get a grasp on their defining traits and what people find enjoyable about them. I appreciate the thorough review, more is on the way!
