It was just 4 people, that is pretty low to be consider that this game was beta tested or the author did not mention the rest for various reasons, like some of them submitting feedback too late
Over a hundred forum users participated on the WIP thread. I don’t know what qualified someone for the beta tester credit, and certainly not everyone commented during the beta phase or left feedback, but the thread did get a lot of engagement.
That said, crowdsourced beta testing isn’t perfect. While I did spend plenty of hours torture testing my own game before submission, I just don’t have the personal capacity to multiply that by a dozen WIPs.
As a fellow beta tester, you have to give useful feedback before the dead line or you won’t be mentioned
It is.
While I can only speak from personal experience, but there is something disheartening into going through your own game as a writer and finding continuity errors, bugs, etc no one pointed out before. And you sit there wondering if either people don’t care about your work enough to point it out, or if you are intimidating, or somesuch.
In any case as an author it’s already disheartening, and as a player it also feels weird for other reasons.
As a player and reader as well, I was hella glad to get gta choice of game before gta 6, I kinda feel that the game just didn’t make a good first impression, it is good no doubt about it but we both know the rest
Some errors are such that a reader might not realize is an error (I’ve certainly several times left scratching my head thinking I’ve missed something, unless it’s a continuity error, only to learn that the author intended it that way, so I’m pretty shy about reporting unless I’m sure or unless I’m actually beta testing) but just a weird transition or something, but that of course doesn’t cover all problems.
I think sometimes it’s just because people skim-read and don’t notice stuff?
Yeah, and I fear this is where the whole mess really begins:
People thinking the authors might not want critique, or that they might even get angry for something being pointed out as striking one as odd when it was intentional.
(granted, there unfortunately are authors like that)
I think as a whole we all need to get braver with our testing and all.
Okay, enough derailing the thread
No we don’t mind lol. Derail all you like. It’s interesting and even refreshing to read the thoughts that you’ve all typed out. It’s certainly helped me a great deal to cope with this.
A lot of what I wanted to say was said already, so at least I can take that energy and put it back into fixing these errors in time for the update.
Before Velocity was released it was riddled with so many errors it almost burst a blood vessel trying to fix them all. Eventually, with the help of everyone from the thread to my Patreon, I hunted and hunted until the quicktests and randomtests came back positive. This then gave me the confidence to submit it thinking everything was sorted out.
Little did I realize that there would be bugs that wouldn’t break the game but show incorrect paths and what not.
Long story short. Beta testing is much more difficult than it seems.
My recommendation is to update the game with a checkpoint/continue system asap, so that folks can at least finish the game more easily.
Once that is done, you can start working on fixing the continuity errors, hopefully with more reports from the playerbase, and roll out another update for that. Continuity errors are an issue, but it is a lower priority next to the game overs, which are drawing more flak at the moment. The launch week is a very critical time, so I recommend testing and getting out the checkpoint/continue system as soon as you can.
I’ve already finished the save system today and patch up all the errors that were reported to me over the course of the few days. Made a new cover art with no logos or legally threatening stuff.
I’m just waiting until Monday to send them off for the update. Since release my eyes have been literally glued to a screen
. From replying to comments, promoting the game, running tests to skimming through the game from start to finish, falling prey to my own insta-death mechanic. Thankfully I have the checkpoint, but it only takes you back to the start of the chapter.
I wanted to like this game but wtf is with the instant deaths? My first race as a crew and I floor it with NO CONTEXT CLUES that it might be risky and I instantly die…WTF is that about? Also I gotta say I wish the characters were at least high school seniors and 18 with how mature the content is…
Just a quick update for everyone:
I’ve now sent the updated files over to the Hosted Games team. The update includes the new checkpoint system that many of you requested, along with a number of bug fixes and corrections that have been reported since launch.
At this point, everything is in the developers’ hands, so I’m just waiting for them to process and publish the update.
Thank you all again for taking the time to report bugs, share feedback, and offer suggestions. It has genuinely been a huge help, and I appreciate everyone’s patience while these improvements make their way into the game.
Update: Checkpoint System & Bug Fixes
Hey everyone,
I wanted to let you all know that the game has received an update based on the feedback and reports I’ve received from the community.
One of the biggest requested features was a checkpoint system. I’ve added one that allows you to return to the beginning of the chapter if your character dies.
Just to clarify, this is not a traditional save system where you can choose when to create a save point. The checkpoint only appears after a death, allowing you to restart from the beginning of that chapter instead of having to replay everything from the very start.
Along with the checkpoint system, I’ve also addressed the errors and issues that were reported to me. Thank you to everyone who took the time to point these things out and help improve the game.
I also want to mention that in a future update, I plan to go back and clean up more of the typos, misspellings, and some of the unusual slang/wording choices that slipped through.
I know the game isn’t perfect, and I don’t want to pretend it is. This is my first published game and my first major project after learning ChoiceScript (excluding Hunter Sky). There was a lot I learned during development, and I know there are areas where I can improve.
Moving forward, I’ll continue working on making my future projects more polished, refined, and enjoyable. Thank you all for your patience, support, and feedback. It genuinely helps me grow as a developer.
Hey. @Fusion_Ultimatum I wanted to complain that even after reports in the time this was just a wip that a lot of times there are scenes that aren’t consistent like when you tell everyone you were arrested even if you did manage to run in first event, you hadn’t fixed those. I was really surprised you hadn’t fixed those.
Next thing is I want to report that scene with Brittney is buggy as it gets unlimited replay unless you date someone else. And she won’t be your date at race like others. It’s as if game doesn’t remember anything regarding that event.
Also about first car pick I haven’t still found that how it’s possible to take another car. Is that would unlock after first play? Is it exclusive content? If the latter I really don’t understand and approve to have something as important as choosing cars in a Racing story to cost extra in a private and independent site not linked to the main publisher (here COG).
Also I want to suggest for your next games to write the pass or fail scenes depending on Stats. In most scenes all choices exept one lead to death or game over even with max stats and that’s absolutely unbelievable. If you gonna die in all choices exept one why you need stats or even Cheat menu? I didn’t have as much problem as people said here cause I did know most early instant deaths from wip days. Still I think everyone would be happier that way.
I’m enjoying the story so far, but a little weirded out that one of the characters shares the name of a notorious rapist.
Oh my
Really? This is certainly a surprise. Do tell which of the characters you are referring?
I’m glad you’re enjoying the story! Did you experience any bugs on your playthrough? And did you get the update with the checkpoints?
No bugs yet. Not sure about checkpoints because I haven’t died.
I’m not sure what I need to do to finish Ch6.
And I guess this is just the universe’s default name for a giant douchebag:
How would one get the update on the omnibus?
Cause it booted me back to the start when I accidentally picked a wrong turn for a race
Clearing cache did nothing
Okay, I just died for the first time, racing for tenth place in Ch. 7. I didn’t get an option to restore to a checkpoint.
I have version 77162.
Yeah, I’m having the same problem. My game ends and restarts instead of reloading from the checkpoint.
