Trial of the Demon Hunter (Chapter One/7k words of update demo available)

The review you posted make me wonder if any of them knew how to

@819817
LOL! Yeah like are these people sure interactive fiction is right for them?

I use Steam a lot to buy games, and one thing that I’ve noticed with the people that buy into alpha tests is that they seem to not understand what a game under alpha is. They are the first to scream and have a fit about how promised features aren’t in the game, how buggy it is, and lots of other things.

So honestly? It isn’t just people buying product that doesn’t appeal to them. They just don’t bother to understand what it is that they are buying in general, and then feel obligated to complain about it.

Self entitlement is annoying. The customer is always right. Okay I get that. But when the customer looks at a hamburger and asks for the hamburger…then pays and walks home with the hamburger well…that’s the end right? But no, the customer comes right back really upset because the customer wanted a hot dog all along. How is that customer right? People are starting to get to the point where they hold others responsible for the fact that they are not thinking at all. And accountability is no longer there. It’s dragging everything down.

I once saw a review that complained the game was “just a bunch of words on a page”

@817819
I saw that, too! You know, that’s why I don’t like when people call these “games” because then people will expect a side winder app or a video game. That’s why I call these interactive novels or gamebooks because that’s what they are.

@BrianBlack
It’s just pure stupidity and unfounded anger.

Hey everyone, I’ve updated DH. The update includes

1.) typo fixes
2.) bug fixes
3.) More paragraphing

I still have to submit it and then wait for all the platforms to update it, but I fixed all the issues you guys mentioned.

Is it possible for your boggart to be killed?

@Nocturnal_Stillness
Not until later in the series

Grrrrr lol

Just noticed this error

“As Valentine lands onto your shoulder As Valentine slithers from out of your robes and onto your shoulder , glaring defensively at the vampire, you contemplate on how to initiate combat with this opponent.”

My boggart could turn into a viper if that helps narrow it down.

another one I spotted

“You might have chosen not to kill the vampire, but as long as he’s alive, he controls all the magical aspects of the tower, which would prove far too dangerous.”

This is a bit confusing as I never got a choice to spare him?

A loophole in the castle I went to the alchemy room and chose the Wind scythe then left and got to go there a second time to take fire devil but only had the choices to either attempt to get the key and flee or get it at all cost.

@Nocturnal_Stillness
Thanks, I’ll fix that ASAP.

There isn’t an option to spare Sarrivan because he doesn’t have a soul, so is beyond saving, and controls the castle. Did I make that too confusing? If so, I’ll re-word it.

So you didn’t have the choice of not attempting to get it? Was it greyed out or gone altogether?

@BrianBlack
Huehuehue :slight_smile: but hey, it’s possible for him to survive

Who could want kill our poor Boggard ? Poor cute Titus :(( i want put his dresses and ribbons soon so cute :*

@poison_mara
It’s good for the plot :stuck_out_tongue: you can in the sequel

Im amused to see this imp of ours in cute little dresses and ribbons. Maybe we could have them all in pink. Ill put them on him. I bet I would win every fight after doing this too. :slight_smile:

@jjc37
As of now I think I’m just including yellow ribbons :stuck_out_tongue: but it’ll certainly boost his morale, which could make him perform better.

EDIT
Actually, I may as well let you pick the ribbon’s color.

So I noticed I have more reviews on Android in almost three weeks (79) than many of the CoGs have in years. Do you all think there’s any signifigance to this?

I think its the subject matter demon hunting ticks a lot more peoples boxes as opposed to a game about an estate agent. Unnatural has the 2nd most highest reviews after Zombie Exodus with Tin Star catching up on android but it has the most reviews on Amazon.com so demons, zombies, monsters and cowboys are popular.

So I think someone should write a cog about a Demon Cowboy who hunts zombies and the ratings will sky rocket lol

@Nocturnal_Stillness
Ha! That would be awesome xD but good point

For the people who left bad reviews because they said there wasn’t any character development and the villains weren’t interesting…

You are startled when Hestia awakens with a heaving, ragged breath. Coughing violently, she winces at her injuries, and utters in a gravelly voice,

“It appears as though we underestimated your power…how did someone like you defeat us, and why have you spared my life?”

“How did someone without demonic powers defeat someone such as yourself? It’s because the thought of avenging my village and protecting my loved ones allows me to persevere. While you are only driven by greed and desire for power, I am driven by love, which is more powerful than anything on this world.”

Rolling her eyes derisively, the assassin spits at your feet, growling,

“Love didn’t save my mother from being tortured and murdered in front of our very eyes. Love didn’t stop those bastards from laughing at our pleas for them to stop. Power was the only thing that could have saved her, and we were utterly powerless, so don’t sit there and tell me love is so powerful!”

“I’m sorry about your mother…is this is why you became a witch?”

“Yes. My siblings and I tracked those pieces of scum down and slaughtered them with our new found abilities, but it wasn’t enough. Nothing could fill the void that her death had created.”

“Killing the ones who murdered your mother probably gave you temporary gratification, but your actions only continued the trail of violence. You think that power is the only thing that holds sway in this world, but lust for power is the stem of all evil. Love didn’t bring those men to do those horrible things, and love didn’t bring you to pursue revenge.”

The assassin seems a little unsure now, but scowls, saying,

“Don’t patronize me!”

"I’m not trying to patronize you; I’m trying to help you. If you’ve personally been through the agony that is the loss of a loved one, you should want for no one else to go through that pain. Instead of letting those monsters turn you into villain, you can use that tragedy to make you a stronger person.

Instead of using your power to hurt others, as they did, use it to help others like you who were powerless to fight back. Show the world, as I’ve shown you, that evil will not prevail. I’ve spared your life because I believe in redemption: that it’s never too late to change for the better."

“How is that possible? I’ll never be able to go back to society; I know for a fact I’ll rot in that prison!”

"Right now, it’s impossible. But I’m going to tell you something confidential. When admitted to the prison, you are incarcerated with all the other criminals of your rank. However, if your behavior is excellent for a year straight, you have the opportunity to be go to a personal therapy with the presiding wizard, who will help you channel your powers into something that can be used for good, as well as helping you heal mentally and emotionally.

After you’ve been fully changed, you are transferred out of the penitentiary to do community service, after which you can slowly be assimilated back into regular society. Obviously, this isn’t public knowledge because it could be abused, but I’m telling you this so you have a better chance of turning your life around and helping the ones you’ve hurt."

You hadn’t noticed until now, but Venefira and the abominable {witch} had revived themselves sometime during your conversation, and appear to have been listening intently. Unable to meet your eyes, the mercenaries seem to be contemplating everything you've said. You begin to resume your speech, when the mysterious {witch} suddenly interjects in a throaty, hideous voice:

“What about me? How can a monster such as I ever return to a normal life?”

“What is your name?” you ask.

“${Illusia}.”

“${Illusia}, the therapy I mentioned earlier would include returning you to your previous state.”

After nearly an hour of continuing the conversation in this vein, you’ve thoroughly convinced the mercenaries to change their evil ways and begin a new life. ${Illusia} and Venefira now wear humble expressions as opposed to the arrogant ones of before, and a solitary tear slides down Hestia’s face. She whispers,

“Thank you…how can we ever repay you?”

“By proving to me that you won’t allow evil to prevail over you; to have been taken by the darkness only to break free and change your ways, that is truly one of the greatest displays of strength.”

Smiling weakly, Hestia nods, staring down at the ground before her, her stomach rumbling audibly.

“If I may ask, I’m curious as to how you surivived the explosion?” you question, referring to Venefira and ${Illusia}.

${Illusia} answers, telling you,

“I have healing powers; I stored some healing magic into pendants that react if something extremely calamitous happens, like an explosion.”

Nodding, you tell ${her},

“That is an example of a supernatural ability you can use for good; I hope you will use that in the future.”

This is an excerpt from the prison scene, where you choose to redeem the assassins using emotion and charisma.

I did that in my first play through.
