Totem Force [Released!]

Mine hero name was Luminescent, then became Halo for some obscure reason.

Is that a bug (because if so, I have no clue how it happened), or did you just change your name?

I changed it, no bug no bug (apart from me bugging y’all) though I have no idea why I changed it.

Got a darkness 2. No idea what this number is supposed to signify though.

It signifies that you were almost entirely saintly but not 100% :innocent:
(Granting that saintliness is subjective, of course. You could also say it tracks how idealistic your character’s overall tone is.)

I was told to report I got Darkness = 9…that isn’t too bad is it?

No way you play is bad, it just could end up darker. However the tale of your character sounds anyway rather light.

Thanks.

Hopefully I can finish it sometime soon…

(For those wondering, the current chapter is the longest I’ve written so far, and is still a way away from being finished. :sob:)

Shh, shh, don’t cry, I’m sure it’s gonna be great, particularly if it has more Phil scenes in it. :innocent:

So what are you planning to do with the actual money from the publication, fund mad science, blow it all on champagne oops, sorry, fruit juice, forgot that you’re a teetotaler there and rent-boys, or something else entirely?

Decided to explore an alternate universe in which Damon Gant (my main) fell for Lani instead of Anara.
Disclaimer: I didn’t get time to read through chapter 9.
Justification: While in the original universe Damon was coldly logical and impassive to most slights, this version was very arrogant and egotistical, meaning that when he lost to Anara, rather than acknowledging that he was mortal and would lose every now and then, took it as a personal insult, thus making him unable to come to be impressed by her intelligence and form an attraction from there. Instead he became drawn to how Lani seemed to also hold the world around her in complete contempt and how she exerted her will on reality.

Yes, in order to make a romance with Lani possible, I had to turn my near-sociopath character into a full-sociopath just to have it make some amount of sense.

And my overall review of Lani is…meh? I guess…I mean, it doesn’t seem like a whole lot changed outside of her scenes. Sure, the changes I made to my own character to accommodate the romance made quite the impact, but that was my own dedication to roleplay, it didn’t really have anything to do with Lani herself.
I actually have the same kind of complaint that I do about Anara, in that the romance seems like a side project rather than a big turning point in our main character’s lives. They just met someone that they may potentially marry, after all, yet there doesn’t seem to be any change in them. If anything, this is even worse with Lani, since at least with Anara you come into contact with her a lot more, and there’s more build-up to it.

In any case, it was interesting to explore an alternate universe. Romance aside, I found it funny how little tweaks to a character could really alter the course of a character’s arc. While with Original Damon it was a case of ā€œthis character isn’t exactly a good person, but he at least does things for a reason making him better than the other guys,ā€ this version lacked even that justification to root for him. He was such an unapologetic asshole that even I wanted him to lose! I’m not sure how that TV show writer is ever going to keep his job; if he almost got fired for killing Ivory Greengrass mid-way through, he probably lost his entire career when trying to make this waste of human skin a protagonist.
This is what Lani does to people! She ruins careers and turns good (kinda…semi…not-really-good-but-at-least-not-evil) men bad!

I’m afraid I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking for here. Do you want me to force your character to be thinking about his girlfriend the entire time? Do you want me to tell you how much you love her? And, sure, with Anara you’d been going out for a few weeks. With Lani, you’ve only been with her for a few days (especially if you haven’t reached Episode 9 yet), and, let’s face it, you’re probably not going to meet ā€œthe oneā€ at sixteen. (Admittedly, at that age, I understand everyone is ā€œthe oneā€ā€¦)

Part of this is also the genre I’m going for; it’s quite rare (and generally unappreciated) for the romance to be more than a side-story. This is going to be an anime-style superhero story with some romance, not a romance story set against a backdrop of anime-style superheroes.

I guess I could add a ā€œhow do you feel about ${lover}?ā€ choice, and then, depending on your answer, add in more flavour text in scenes including the character (and even some not including the character). Would this help, do you think?

As a side note: you don’t actually have to be evil to romance Lani… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I have no complaints about the romance so far. I haven’t tried shipping my MC with Lani yet, but all the ones that I’ve tried feel as if their plausible and believable, relatively speaking. I mean yeah the interactions do seem a little abrupt at times, but considering the army essentially screwed over a city just to create a band of super soldiers that they’re not entirely sure of what they do, I think our loves are probably thinking the same thing when it comes to time and place.

Well, considering that I’m constantly reminded of Power Rangers whenever I play through this, I think you’ve succeeded in that aspect. :relaxed:

I think it’s an acceptable trade off: the romantics are satisfied that their love has been acknowledged by the narrator, and you’ll be satisfied in that romance doesn’t consume the story.

Yup. I saw a commercial out for the newest power rangers and all I can think when I see it is: ā€œTotem Forceā€!

Well one of my childhood friends did marry his highschool sweetheart , so it’s possible, although I’ll note there was an eight year gap covering college and some other things, during which they both dated others, so ymmv.

On the other hand, considering the circumstances of the game my mc finds himself in Phil may be his one shot at a genuine romance, cause whatever happens and whether it’s gonna be ā€œcelebrityā€ superhero or (very much unwilling in my mc’s case) government agent those circumstances would make it very hard, imho to possibly ever find a genuine relationship again.

Actually, that’s one way Lani might be different… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

And the role-players won’t be sad that I’m forcing them to love someone they see as a brief fling…

Totem Force the movie. I like it. :grinning:

Sure, some people are lucky (although, by the sound of it, they didn’t realise it at the time). And I’m certainly not going to force people to split up simply because ā€œit’s more realisticā€.

You’d probably have to age up the main characters by about 2 years to make it a blockbuster (in order for them to be played by 20-something actors with Hollywood casting) though.

We’ll see, Phil does have a reputation and I definitely would want him to be the guy my mc loses his virginity to, other then that, we’ll have to see I guess.
Still I think that in either plausible outcome I mentioned above my mc would certainly share my fear of never finding another genuine relationship ever again. As in the world of celebs everything seems fake and in the other case it would be government handlers controlling (or trying to) every aspect of his life, which would make him highly wary of any cute guys the government throws at him.

True, those two are the luckiest people I know when it comes to romance, others are already divorced (with or without kids) and yours truly hasn’t yet figured out how to get a romantic relationship to last beyond that two year anniversary.
