Tokyo Wizard Post-Release Discussion Thread (Update v.1.2.5, 5th March 2025)

Yes  Anyway, I meant I wanted to create ambiguity at the beginning of the game, given the story that is unfolding

That makes sense. Trouble is that I was too afraid to commit to a path because of it. That’s more because these games don’t have saves though. Finding out you were on the evil path the whole time without knowing is a bit tricky if you have to start all the way over.

If you find out that you’re on the evil path, then either finish it, or step back when you realize how evil you’ve been and try to make amends!

Mmmmmm… you should be able [spoiler] to raise your dead familiar as a ā€œzombie familiarā€ if you didn’t revive it… (you didn’t manage to do this? Maybe there is a bug?).

Hi, sorry to bump this old thread, but I don’t know where else to ask and I think there could be a bug with the familiar. I was really enjoying the game, I managed to revive the familiar, and then later on reached an ending. I tried to repeat the chapter and the familiar wasn’t present at all. Determined to save little Daisy I restarted the game, made as many of the same choices as I remembered, and then… I have the familiar, but when I interact with the kappa the option to revive it wasn’t there. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, I tried a couple times already… Is there a set of conditions I’m not meeting or is there a bug? Could you tell me what needs to happen to make the option appear? I’m pretty sure I redid the same choices but it just doesn’t happen… Only the burial does. Thanks for the game!!

Hi, no worries at all about re-opening the thread, and glad you liked the game! To be honest, it was a while since I last updated the game, so I was thinking of maybe also spending some time adding some bits and pieces to it, so it would also be a good chance to address any bugs.

Can you let me know a bit more? So, Daisy is your familiar, and she got killed. In one of your playthroughs you managed to revive her, but not in the other playthroughs. To be honest, the options available greatly depend on the path you take in the game… could you let me know a bit more? (I am guessing you are always going to Kamakura, correct?

Thank you for the answer!! For bugs, I think that one is confirmed: the first time I tried making a different choice after the ending, I chose to repeat the chapter, and it began with no trace of the familiar.

As for the last question, yes, that’s a constant. I also always refuse to fight the elementals, always learn the same spells (forget, fly, mirror images… Tell me if I’m forgetting something)… I don’t know what else to list, what info do you need? My fear is that some apparently inconsequential dialogue choices with Arcanus made huge differences, like whether I asked all the questions or just went ahead with the plot sometimes… I don’t remember all those instances.
Basically the first time the sequence was: Go to the hills → Meet Kappa → Make friends with him → I ask him about a teacher and he answers → He then says I can revive the familiar → It happens. In subsequent playthroughs I ask him about a teacher and nothing happens. I don’t know, I’m confused on what it is that makes any difference. A doubt I had was, maybe I didn’t immediately help him the first time and asked him something before putting the water back on his head? I don’t know, I’ll try later maybe, now I’m burnt out from too many tries.

Oh, maybe I can see what the problem is. So, you played to the end of a given chapter, and then used the save system to return to the beginning of that chapter? (as opposed to starting the game over?). If so the problem may be with the save system that I implemented (this is not an official CoG system, but rather me copying all the various variables… it normally works well, but maybe that is indeed a bug).

@adrao I have vacation next week and I can also replay the game and see if I can get the same kind of issues as @torn has but not use the save system if you think that might help

If you can reply then that would be a great help! (also, let me know if you think of any small parts of the game that could be extended… I am thinking of maybe spending some time to add a bit to some part of the game, once I finish with my new upgrade to Raiders of Icepeak Mountains)

That’s what I tried the first time… Then when I saw it didn’t work I started the game over multiple times, with the issues I described. If you tell me what you need to know to figure out the issue I’ll give you any info I can remember.

Oh yes thank you! The familiar was a furret, btw. Don’t know if it makes any difference but you never know. Also I learned the toy spell and bought her the toy

Thanks for the information. I’ll try to replay it with the furret and learn the spell and get the toy. Then I’ll try it with a different familiar to see if there was any difference.

Also what difficulty setting did you use?

I think it was the easiest, or easy at max, I mostly wanted the story. The toy was a necklace btw

Any news?

I solved the issue, eventually. Besides the save system glitching out the pet, the problem was that in subsequent runs, even restarting from scratch, I bowed to the kappa without talking to him first. Apparently this locked me out of talking to him, even though I did give the water back… I retried on a whim to just talk to him first and that locked me out of bowing to him, which I’m sure I did the first time around… But it’s possible I misremembered. Anyway, I managed to bring her back to life, I’m continuing the game, and all is good.

As a side note, the whole reason I died for the first time was that I didn’t fly away with Yuki because I didn’t want to stop her casting the spell against the tsunami, since she felt it was her responsibility and I didn’t want to go against her wishes… Had I known that in that choice I would have rescued her only when she collapsed and wasn’t able to do the spell anyway, I would have chosen it. The way it was worded, I interpreted that choice as ā€œfly her away as she’ll try to do the spell even when it’ll become too weak to stave off the waveā€ā€¦ Anyway, that’s my feedback, love the rest of the game either way, so thanks again and good luck with your future works!

Apologies for not responding back, been sick for the past week and a half with COVID.
Hoping to resume playing the game to see if I I can replicate your issue

@adrao Is there a way to get a bigger house to live in for bigger pets? Also, what characters are there that can become your teacher other than Arcanus and Yuki? I kinda want to know which path is best for someone who want to focus on summoning and animals if I could since I’m new to this.

@adrao I just finished my first playthrough and was Tokyo Wizard supposed to have a sequel? Also, can you add a path in the base game or even in the future DLC where you have other options to learn magics that doesn’t require you being forced into by Arcanus?

So, today I submitted an update for Highway Wars, and in parallel during the last few days I have been working Hero or Villain: Armageddon. But… I think in parallel to that I would like to work on a DLC for Tokyo Wizard. For this, please feel free to make any suggestions on parts of the game that you feel could be improved (I will listen and try my best to accommodate as much as possible). But, specifically I want this DLC to add something in terms of length to the game. I have long talked about making a sequel to Tokyo Wizard, but realistically this may not happen so quickly (as I have many other projects in my mind), so maybe a DLC that just brings the game forward a little could be a nice compromise?

So… as usual, I have a poll! What aspect of the game do you think I should expand? (I also have possible names for the DLC…)

  • Life as a Litch (expanding on the ending where you are turned into a litch)
  • Kyoto Wizard (maybe you go to Kyoto, learn new spells over there… and fight a demon?)
  • Ghosts of Kamakura (expand on the Kamakura part of the game, exploring ancient temples and mystical creatures)
  • Eruption of Mount Fuji (it has erupted in the past… so who knows when it will be next time!)
  • Other? (please let me know below!)

What does that entail?

Well… it is a big update for HW, which means I can now work on other things, like Armageddon or TW. CoG doesn’t update immediately, but eventually HW should be updated, which will hopefully become a better game?
