Maybe MC is someone who doesn’t want to take any chances in anything, so they do what they can to get the outcome they want or at the very least the one that doesn’t upset MC that much.

I’d tell her it’s because “he doesn’t like you, you’ve grown apart, he thinks you’re stuck up” etc. Something to play into her emotions. For Clyde: “what, you like her? But she thinks you’re so childish and annoying! She complains about you all the time! She’s still upset with you over what you did to the sacred tree! I mean, the only reason she talks to you is because we’re friends. If it weren’t for me, she’d want nothing to do with you!”
Tell Clyde that his dreams of being a Knight will be nil if he gets involved with someone. “How are you supposed to be focused on your career if you’re so focused on someone else?”
Tell him they’re incompatible. “She’s rich! She’s used to having everything handed to her, how is a poor boy like you going to provide for her? Besides, her father would never allow it!”
