The Viking Age Era- Interest check

UPDATED

Hey! So I’ve been really pondering on making my own choicescript game, and I’ve decided to take a shot at it. So you may be asking, what exactly is it about? Well it will revolve during the Viking age set during 800 AD just at the start. Before I start to really work on it I need to know who would be interested playing at all and if so as a king or Queen from England. I’ll go more into depth of what the storyline would look like.

English
You will play as an English Saxon King or Queen from either Wessex, Sussex, Essex, Kent, Wales, East Anglia, Mercia, or Northumbria. Everything was fine until the Vikings started to raid all of England. Do you bribe them to leave your kingdom alone, do you fight them back with pure force? It’s up too you. You can choose to conquer the other kingdoms of England bringing them under your one rule as the King or Queen of all England. You could ally with the Vikings and betray them or stay true. You can choose to colonize the Vikings homeland teaching them of your culture and your God. Get married, have a family, form allegiances, betray them, stay true to them.

I know you may be thinking this is gonna take forever and honestly it probably will. I also am not lost with it comes to choice script I’ve worked with it, and plan on using a program that will make it more simple to finish. If I get enough interests I’ll add a poll to see which story plot people enjoy better and will begin my work. Also the history, terminology may not ALL be correct. I might change things around.

Inspirations
I got the idea from the shows “Vikings” and “The Last Kingdom”.

Information
If anyone is really interested in this and may have some big ideas, or plots they would like to see in the game you can email me or message me on here. Or if anyone is interested in proof reading and testing the game out you can also email me or message me here

I’ve decided to work on one storyline considering adding both would take way to long. That story line would be the English point of view. My intentions are not to upset those were looking forward to both storylines in one game. I do intend to make another game based on the Vikings side. Sorry for the inconvenience but I hope you understand.

Answered Questions
Q.Will we be able to play as both Viking and English?

A. I will not be adding both choices in one game. The first game will have the MC play as English. There will be a chance for your MC to somewhat act like a Viking. I will make another game which will have the MC playing as a Viking.

Q. Will the Gods or God play a major role and will their be mythology?

A. Well playing as an English man you will automatically be introduced to God. Of course your MC will have the chance to either believe or not to believe. Now mythology wise, I do intend to introduce Odin and Loki which your MC can learn and choose to participate in it or what not.

Definitely put in an option to betray Vikings to English or vice versa. Loki is my favorite Viking God.

I’m definitely interested and I think if you can afford to have the option to play as both.

Can I just say that it’s really hard choosing between the Vikings and the English? Both stories sound awesome. Whatever perspective you choose to write, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. That being said, I think I prefer the Viking story. There are lots of games set in England already (or fantasy worlds based on England), and I think it’d be refreshing to have a game set in Scandinavia.

Sounds great! There was actually a series of game books which let you experience history from both sides - for example the French Revolution as the Aristocrats or Revolutionaries - so having something like that for Vikings and English Saxons would be interesting, assuming you could make it work.

I think Vikings are awesome. Some of my favorite book series are based on vikings. Is it gendelocked or open? If so you have a amazing chance to show off gender options. Valkaries(cant remember how to spell it) or whatever the word for female vikings, wouls be awesome to see. It was one of the first cultures I know of to have different views on women and fighting.

Hope to see some chapters in the coming months!

Trust me I planned on adding that

I also do plan on having the Gods have some importance with the game, just not major.

I’m glad a few people have shown interests and voiced their opinions. It seems a few of you would like to see both I’ll be sure to add both as an option in the poll

Sorry I’m on my phone and I’m not exactly sure how to reply to multiple people in one post, so I apologize if me double posting is annoying lol. But to answer your question No this will not be gender locked. I was thinking about it at first but I realized that would lose majority of the crowd. I definitely will be doing more research on Woman roles :slightly_smiling_face:

This game sound really cool. I think I’d prefer playing as a viking rather than Englishman.

Having the option to play as both might require two (almost) separate storylines. This will probably be almost twice the work. The problem with a mutual storyline is that it will be hard to make it feel natural. However, if it is executed properly, it will be more fun to play with two options instead of one.

I would love to see this because I am a history nerd.

I think you may want to do some more research before writing. Viking is a term that only applies to Norsemen who went on long voyages to trade or raid. The people themselves are Norse, Swedes, Danes, etc. So you would raid your neighboring Danes on a Viking. If they raided your homestead they would be Vikings. The Viking era is one of my favorite eras but there are way too many misconceptions. Things like Shieldmaidens being common when in fact they were just as rare as modern day female warriors, though as this is going to be fiction that is not an issue. It is something you could use to enhance the story in my opinion is a female character having to prove herself and overcome the prejudice.

I love Vikings the show but historically it is not really that accurate. So I can clearly separate history from fiction and enjoy it, but I would love something that is historical fiction much more grounded in the reality with just a few liberties taken, like the show does to some extent.

Just so you are aware, Shield Maiden is the appropriate term, Valkyrie refers to a mythical being that stalked battlefields looking for worthy warrior souls to bring to Valhalla to fight for Odin in Ragnarok. And despite what modern society makes it out to be, Shield Maidens are still extremely rare, women almost never took up arms or went on a Viking(which by the way does not refer to the people but just to those who went on voyages of trade or raid). Women did fight in defense of a homestead, because often the men were off on a Viking and there weren’t enough men to defend the homestead. This is what has led to the misconceptions that are being spread in today’s media.

I think you should make two separate games, make the vViking one first. See how that turns out, if it’s good make the English one.

@2xs That’s good to hear you know a lot of stuff about the Viking age, maybe you could help :slightly_smiling_face:. I also did state this won’t be that accurate considering all the research.

@Hellburner2 glad you said that! I was actually thinking about just doing two separate games, if I put it all in one it would take me at least a year considering school and work and a life.
