The Sword of Rhivenia (Remake) (DEMO UPDATED 02/10)

The only thing stopping me is the fact that all the ROs are really strong and I’m indecisive, and because if I did this, I just know Charlie Brown would look up at me as a hypocrite and/or disgrace and he’d totally be right

Tbf, it feels like one of the main themes of this game is that people will do uncharacteristic or even irrational things for the sake of love

Ain’t that the truth, everybody’s doing stupid sh!t just to get laid, and MC is no exception with half the options being:

  • Xavier, the guy you’ve kept as a political prisoner for years
  • Tameran, a criminal who should by all rights be killed for his line of work
  • Maevra, your guard (and maybe your potential assassin if that theory holds)
  • Clara, the girl who your brother has a crush on
  • Lena, the sister of the guy you’ve kept as a political prisoner for years
  • Astryn, the girl who was previously and is currently planning how to kill you

And you’re totally allowed to take your shot with any of them as if there wouldn’t be terrible and drastic consequences for each and every one.

NGL, i feel while those examples do show people acting arguably irrational, they’re also completely within boundaries of regular human behavior. In fact, it’d probably feel weirder if everyone was instead acting completely rational 100% of the time, because that is something you rarely see in the wilds.

When the guy who tosses someone into a pit of snakes is somehow one of your safest options.

Yeah that’s true, it does come down to human behavior being based on emotion and sometimes irrational, and while it does work against the MC and is arguably quite literally responsible for every problem going on in the plot, it’s just human. I mean, except the whole ‘infertility poison’ and ‘cut off a child’s hand’ things, like those are both batsh*t crazy, right? And then Alvena straight up said she’d have done it even if she’d known Isabelle was pregnant, where’s the human empathy? No wonder she’s afraid for her family’s lives when you get crowned, I’d say that’s some genuine sociopath behavior.

Without delving too much into politics, i fear that “cut off a thief’s hand, doesn’t matter if he’s a kid” pales in comparison to people advocating earnestly and with straight face that children should be genocided with no remorse on basis as simple as the “fact” they will no doubt grow up into terrorists, which is a thing that well, happens basically right now. And without the excuse of “we’re medieval peasants who don’t know any better”.

What if you make Isabelle your advisor? Bet nobody would see that coming. :eye::mouth::eye:

I was actually thinking Matteo, since the guy seems to be on a similar moral wavelength as my MC. Other than his poisoning of the King in the version before the rewrite anyway. No idea if the author has changed that in the rewrite.

On second thought, let’s not go to Camelot Rhivenia. 'Tis a silly place.

True, true. He… he tries, at least? He does make some awful decisions under pressure. But if he had a variety of opinions to consider, I think he’d do better. A lot of his worst decisions have been reactions, but with more time and more information to work with, I think he’d grow out of the “Aw man, mom and dad are expecting me to do something - so I’ll do the first thing that comes to mind!”

The plan to send food was a pretty good plan, I think.

And I know like… three? People that could hold the advisor position under the current rules: Gerard, Arnold, and Raymond. And two of them are still doing knightly duties.

“No foreigner” technically disqualifies Isabelle and Matteo, and everyone else I know is either my age or related to me or both. :person_shrugging: So why not give my stay-at-home brother a job to help him out of his funk?

EDIT: (Also forgot to mention that I wasn’t necessarily thinking of “advisor” in terms of “person I’d listen to over anyone else,” but that I was more concerned with “person that will be leading / dealing with the council and ruling in my stead while I’m away” - and out of anyone, once reconciled I think Richard would be able to guess how I would have reacted to a given scenario, and willing to do the same. )

I kinda get what you are trying to do. I was thinking something similar. But rather than advisor I was thinking since the public likes Richard so much and he enjoys being adored by the public that he could be given some sort of position that puts him in charge of improving the lives of the populace or something like it.

I also wonder, since Matteo doesn’t seem to want to inherit the ruler role of his country if Richard could in his place? Same with Atheris inheriting Grandma’s country?

I figure that our mother will inherit her kingdom’s throne first once grandma die, then Atheris will, unless something happened to both of them, then the MC will likely be the one who inherit since I believe Freya will refuse to take it.

What i’m hearing here is we can do Richard a double favor by arranging accidents for his mother and uncle, so he becomes first in line to inherit the throne. /s

So something like MC’s steward or castellan, rather than the Advisor.

“Richard, you are now the royal family’s voice to and of the people; you’ll oversee and carry our gifts to the people, lead celebrations where I can’t attend, and generally…use your charisma to uphold our image to the people. You’ll have to clean yourself up though. please don’t f**k this up. What? No I didn’t say anything out loud, just go clean up.”

No way he can screw up a job where his sole responsibility is making us look good, right?

The evil route:

I expect great things from you and your coworker, Clara.

you forgot the jerk of a grandad on Richard’s mom’s side he needs to have an accident arranged as well honestly I may dislike Richard in my main playthrough but his mom’s dad is a real piece of work.

Checked out the updated demo and it’s fascinating to see how it’s changed from the original.

My only real feedback at this moment is that I recall the original having a few small bits of family exchanges where the player got to control the responses, such as the quiz in school, talking about the cold weather en route to see the twins or an opportunity for the MC to tell his father directly what he felt about the killing of Francis. These were great little character moments that should make a return.

Oh, and I miss Jarean’s sister. What happened to her? She was fun!

Beyond that, I’m greatly enjoying the expanded experience.

I actually thought of that during my playthrough. If I’m going the ultra-goody two shoes route, my character was horrified and angry over what her mother did. This is why I liked the chance to respond “I don’t need your support” during one scene with Alvena.”

That was a playthrough when my character pointed out how Alvena must have hated her to name her after a snake.

It will also be interesting to see how things develop for the characters, and how much say the MC has in it. I know the original you could have someone married off if you were the ruler for an alliance…but it doesn’t seem like that would happen now.

I will also say that I did appreciate the one gesture when Xavier was returned, and he said his injuries weren’t from the MC. I bet Lena is going to think he has some kind of Stockholm syndrome with how effusive he might be.

Heh, and I had to laugh a little with what seems to be gifts bestowed by the gods. If nothing else, the enemy’s power is more impressive; creating/ending fire while mine just gets a flashback.

Yeah I feel like in here, the MC as Monarch has almost zero “hard power” (meaning we can’t really make actual changes) and pretty little “soft power” (meaning we can’t really influence people either. Except maybe Lena with freeing Xavier.)

Idk whether that is due to our MC being so new that the author wants to emphasize it by giving us very little actual power but I hope it starts to change in the future as our MC gets more experienced and starts using their power more effectively.

What I’m trying to say is it currently looks like Jesus is taking the wheel for everything while we are just along for the ride.

I haven’t read the original but I like what I see here. Pretty good so far but I’d like to see certain scenes more fleshed out. For instance, I think that the scenes where mc finds out why Isabelle and Alvena don’t get along anymore+the scene where Alvena and Mc talk about it should definitely be more dramatic. I feel like the latter especially was very “on the nose” with the short scene +choices on what the mc feels about what she did. Kinda feels like we just brushed over something that should very significantly change our whole perspective of her.

The other thing is the action stats like archery/swordsmanship, etc. I understand that we (probably) haven’t gotten to the point in the story where they matter the most but I think that they can be grouped together? Stats like archery and sword could fall under combat for example. I say this because this one scene and its choices to increase stats confused me. The one where I could choose a secondary thing I focused on during the time skip. I chose spent time with common folk. I wasn’t sure if this increased my rep or a stat like my previous choice that increased my sword stat did.

Looking forward to the next update, Lena might be the best RO yet!
