I think that the price of freedom would be good title
Hellooooooooo people! Bosoncat here, back again. I’m nearing the end of my winter break, so here’s an update on things:
- With college apps wrapping up (got into all of my EA schools!), I will have more time to spend on this thing. Can’t guarantee that it’ll be a lot more time, but it’ll be more.
- I have a lot of the text for an intro/character creation thing done! I’ll have to flounder about with the code before I have anything workable to show y’all, but it’s getting there.
- As far as RO’s are concerned, I’ve decided to leave their gender to the player (That’s actually a hint for y’all; if you can decide their gender and they aren’t related to you, they’re probably romanceable).
- Lastly, and most importantly, how do y’all think the MC’s power copy should work; I’m torn between touch (copies powers through direct physical contact) and observation (copies powers by watching them in use).
Thanks again for all of your patience!
P.S.: @Zeus I’m with you on that. The title of this work shall be, at least for now, The Price of Freedom.
Copying powers by observation sounds like the Sharingan so I’m totally onboard with it XD
Through physical contact is fine too, but will it be like Rogue in the X Men where she can’t make any physical contact? Or will the MC have a choice to touch others without copying powers?
As far as the ROs, I like all the ones you’ve mentioned so far but I wouldn’t mind having an RO without superpowers- just a regular citizen. Not asking you to change anything now though, it’s already a lot of work on your plate.
Looking forward to a demo, this looks really promising.
@Bosoncat Just saw this today…wow sounds awesome.Wonder how I didn’t see it before.
Are you gonna post a demo anytime soon…I’d love to see that.
Sounds badass, can’t wait
I think it should be through observation
I feel like it would be a bit too easy if it was through observation.
Cool can’t wait how about first having touching to gain powers which can be epic if the player also uses weapons or other abilities so they won’t be totally defenseless if they can’t touch people or want to even use powers so they could be a sharpshooter, martial artist, sword user, gadgets, intelligent plans to use the environment to hurt enemies, make enemies fight against each other and come up with amazing teamwork plans to just name a few. But if they decided to use their powers like I said start with touching then maybe have the player’s power evolve to observation or they can stay with touching and increase touch so they can either drain and store more than one power, evolve again and use a stolen power longer evolve again and use two powers at a time and have the same things with observation.
But make the drawbacks more serious because the player is getting stronger. Use a power longer than normal and you get tired and sluggish than you normal did (At the start five minutes after using powers first evolve ten minutes, eyesight you sight now gets blurry fuzzy and such because its the first time you stole powers with sight) and if you don’t train to use it longer then you will get tired and sluggish blurry and fuzzy vision more which could cost you a friend or innocents life your let the bad guy escape. Use two powers and you can barely move because of the physical strain and for your eyes you go blind for a short period of time like the sharingan unless you train your body and mind to handle it and until you are able to adapt to being able to use two powers at once.
And the finally evolve form maybe some gold superman super sayain four level powers in a epic fight with a powerful villain, hero if you can be a villain, alien or yourself on some evil clone stuff.
I think that whatever you do is fine
Observation it’s a little op but who wants to play as an underpowered superhero (not meant to affend anyone who does)
So. After considering everyone’s responses, I’ve decided to go with both. Sort of. It works like this:
-
At least half a minute of concentrated observation gives you partial access to the target’s powers. You operate at the skill level expected of someone using their powers for the first time. After a few minutes, you’ll probably have basic control, but any quirks or specific applications the powers may have will probably take a lot longer to figure out.
-
Direct physical contact gives you full access to the target’s powers at the target’s skill level. In addition to simply having the abilities, you have mastery over then equal to that of the target. Any quirks or counterintuitive components of the powers come naturally to you, and you also have complete knowledge of the target’s fighting style.
e.g.1: You copy White Collar’s light control powers via observation. You’ll probably be able to manage basic light beams and light shields, but that’s it. In a fight against the real White Collar, you’re screwed.
e.g.2: You copy White Collar’s light control powers via touch. You have access to the full extent of White Collar’s mastery with light beams and shields, and will also know to use you ability to refract light to give yourself telescopic vision and how to maintain passive light armor. In a fight against the real White Collar, you’d be evenly matched.
For touch will a slight brush count or will it have to be full contact for at least a second or two?
I’d say full contact.
So do we still get to keep three powers at a time? If so if we wanted a new power would we choose a power to replace instead of the last power auto replaced?
Can’t wait for the demo
I think that the mc should work they way up to three powers starting with one, gaining two and ending with three for a more super feel like you came this far and grown from where you started
I like that. I was going to bump it down to just one, and I might still but I like the progression. This way I can work with one, see how that feels, and not have to do a bunch of rewrite if it’s wonky.
I like that idea to because like what reaper general said it would show how the mc progressed from the start to the end
This is sounding really cool, but I have one question; what scale are the powers going to be? For example, in heroes rise one of the people with super strength (who’s name escapes me) can lift several tons. Will most powers we gain also be around that kind of level or will it be allot higher end?
It really varies. By and large, however, most supers with large-scale powers tend towards more powerful; someone with super strength can lift and throw several tons with ease, someone who controls water can easily manipulate several tens of thousands of gallons in complex forms, etc, etc, etc. They wouldn’t be able to do this as soon as they start using their powers, however; it would take years of practice. At the same time, you have powers like lie detection and imperceptibility that don’t have as vast a scope or as much room for growth.
