The Judgement of Tarkar [8/9/2024, Months 6 and 7 update]

I’m glad you loved the choices, and thank you for pointing out those errors!

So I just replayed this, it’s been a long time and it’s still excellent but I started to realize something, this game, it depends largely on luck, through encounters and works. We can change our luck by the sorceress’s spell but we can only achieve it through adventure mode, which I am struggling with, that adventure mode is hard, I’m seriously, I can’t find balance between spending money on equipment and on monthly rent, I can barely have enough money to pay rent even when working as an alchemist ( high pay ) and we can only increase vitality through farming ( low pay ); the equipments, potions, weapons are expensive. I hope there will be some kind of difficulties so we can change our luck freely without requirements

Thanks for trying out adventure mode! I didn’t want the mountain adventure to be too easy, but it appears I made it too difficult for non-farmers! In the next update I was planning to have enemies drop money and for there to be treasures (food, elixirs, weapons, etc.) around the map, so I think that might help regarding buying weapons and elixirs.

You make an excellent point about being forced into farming for adventure mode – the main reason for fighting in adventure mode is to obtain the Hero Ending, not the Farmer Ending, so there should be more ways to circumvent the vitality/spirit stat. The good news is that I already have code in place for ordering enemies to flee (which requires charm) and avoiding attacks (which requires etiquette), so it won’t be a problem to expand that as well as add options for intelligence/insight-focused heroes.

Oops, I forgot to gray out that option – the sorceress’ spell for luck hasn’t been coded in yet, so it isn’t working right now even if you do obtain it. Different difficulties is a good idea, though, and definitely something I’ll add.

I want my MC to become some kind of anti-hero, he want to help people but often through bloodshed ( although we can’t have violence in the city )
I have a feeling that the wonder stat will have a major role in some secret endings ( like … becoming a god, demon, powerful sorcerer or something supernatural like that )

Don’t worry – I’m using hero here in the more classical Greek sense. Every MC, whether heroic or villainous, can obtain the Hero Ending.

Although there are no secret endings (all twenty-nine are listed in the achievements), you are right that there are supernatural ones. I don’t want to spoil too much, but you can already start towards one of those endings by dealing with the sorceress.

I just noticed that sometimes, people refer my Harja as male although they are female, once when they leave the city, the guard said “he” instead of “she”

First of all, thank you to @Otaku_Mode and @FleurJane for the kind comments!

Secondly, the RO polls are now closed! Dathus, Raine, Juliana, and Restituta are now joining Manahen, Terentia, and Harja as the possible romances. I’ll be adding descriptions for them in the first post soon.

Today’s small update adds the Eastern Fields to Adventure Mode. Explore the spirited farmlands east of the city! Visit the famed Blackberry Farm, avoid the apparitions, and talk with travelers like the Nomian Warrior. Or perhaps you’ll really dive into these bloodstained fields and fight the God of Death to earn his blessing!

Speaking of blessings, there are also three benedictions (difficulties) I’ve added for both areas. The Benedictions of Harja, the God of War, and Goddess of Love.

If you just want to explore without fighting – or you want to fight but have an easier time – then Harja’s is perfect for you. You cannot fall in battle and all flee attempts will succeed. This is great if you are trying to talk to someone so you can force certain endings (if you talk to the Landlord in the Eastern Fields enough times, for example, she’ll appear during the endgame and ask if you want to become a landlord even if you don’t have all the stats for it).

If you want a harder fight but also increased luck and the chance for increased stats/traits if you fight or flee, then the God of War is the one you should choose. If you want an even harder difficulty where enemies appear more often, you can’t flee, and enemy stats are increased, but your luck is even better and there’s a chance for increased stats/traits if you talk or order, then choose the Goddess of Love.

Next update will also be small as I make the startup variables and checkpoint system more orderly, add more descriptions to the stat page now that I’ve finalized all the ROs, and finish the final area in adventure mode.

I guess despite my selecting so, it wasn’t all good.

Should I skip the prologue for the time being? This error happened after completing it.

Ha ha ha. :smiling_face_with_tear: Well, good news is that you should now be able to continue past the prologue as I’ve removed the variable and the bug.

For now, though, I’m circumventing the checkpoint system (the source of the problem) completely – otherwise similar bugs would pop up while I’m still reorganizing. If anyone wishes to go back to previous scenes, you can still use the save system in dashingdon.

I’ve also added all RO descriptions to the first post!

Another small update (before the stat page/final adventure area update) – I’ve added a maze-like area with treasures to the Mourning River and a bit spookier description if you dive in the center.

For now, there’s also an option to go directly to the adventure areas when you start the game. (I also put back the option to skip prologue which I accidentally deleted last time, haha.) It will randomize name, hair, gender, etc., but you get most adventure items (food, clothing, weapons) already unlocked. Please test it out! :person_fencing:

First off, I just want to say that this is probably one of the best WIPs I’ve found in awhile. Great idea, great writing, and a great balance between the premise of being a fairly normal person getting stuck with guiding a god and the joys of being a competent fantasy protagonist.

I have found three major game breaks I should point out:

  1. If you go to the pawn shop and try to sell clothes, the game will break.

  2. After exchanging three answers for a boon with the sorceress, any further attempts to visit the forest broke the game.

  3. When visiting the assassin’s meeting under a bakery, talking to the merchant with the water was the only option that didn’t break the game.

Aside from that, I have one suggestion. When training as a sorcerer and learning to use magic, I feel there should be options to use magic outside of adventuring. Not a must have, but it’d be nice if you’d be able to add it.

Again, this is really well done and I look forward to its continuation and eventual completion.

hey can you release a guild or hints about how to unlock certain routes. I usually get stuck trying to pay rent and cant discover other routes. Thank you

Thank you! I’ll check out those breaks right away, and adding more magic to scenes is a fun idea. There’s a few places I’m already thinking of – is there any particular moment you would have liked to use magic?

You’ll want to become leader of the Housing Council (cheaper housing!) and gain the Key to the City (own a mine and get money without doing anything!).

Housing Council Leader Guide

Path 1: Threaten
In month 2, week 2, successfully learn who is involved with the Housing Council. Then, when Harja asks, tell them the truth. – OR, fail to learn but lie and successfully name one of the people anyway.
In month 2, week 4, learn about the two people who are being evicted. (In choices that look like this one, you can succeed if the stat is high enough as well as low enough (less than 10).)
In month 3, week 2, focus on the Council noblewoman and not the beggar. Successfully deal with the attack, and then answer her question based on the MC’s current personality.
In month 3, week 3, tell Harja what you learned from the noblewoman.
In month 3, week 5, when you greet the leader, choose either of the last two options (to show that you won’t play nice). Then, when the two people involved with the Council are asked to tell the truth, choose either of the first two options for both so they can reveal what’s been going on to Harja.

Path 2: Convince
In month 2, week 2, successfully learn who is involved with the Housing Council. Then, when Harja asks, do not tell them the truth so you fail to reach the widower’s house on time.
In month 2, week 4, do not let Harja learn who is being evicted. For this choice, you must choose a stat that’s between 10 and 20 in order to fail.
In month 3, week 2, focus on the Council noblewoman and not the beggar. Successfully deal with the attack, and then answer her question based on the MC’s current personality.
In month 3, week 3, do not tell Harja what you learned from the noblewoman.
In month 3, week 5, when you greet the leader, choose either of the first two options (to show the leader that you will play nice). Then, when the two people involved with the Council are asked to tell the truth, choose either of the last two options for both (again, to show the leader you are on his side).

Key to the City and a Cinnabar Mine (note: as HeroBuddy pointed out, there's a game break here, so this may have to be adjusted):

Path 1: Schmooze
(Optional) In month 3, week 2, focus on the beggar and either successfully convince her to talk to you (answer based on current personality), or fail her first question and answer the next person you meet successfully, - AND/OR, have Harja believe that Soteris or Aquila are in love with them.
In month 4, week 2, choose your disguise for the palace by calling in favors (some help/full help), using the secret passage (some help/full help), or asking for advice (no help). Do not disguise yourself as an Ambassador of Nomia.
In month 4, week 3, successfully get past the guards and servants with a high stat (30+) or a low stat (-10). If you called in favors or used the secret passage, some help will get you past the guards even if you give the wrong answer, while full help will also get you past the servants. For the ambassador, you don’t need to worry about stats: just don’t mention the war or compare cities. When you meet with the potentate or judge, convince them not to imprison you for sneaking into the palace (relationship stat 60+, wear Pretty Fancy Outfit, wonder 10+, or ruler trait 10+) OR have high relationship with Harja (70+).
In month 4, week 4, tell Harja about the mural (if you did the optional choice in month 3, then telling Harja is not required).
In month 5, week 2, speak to those at the meeting (not the merchant) and successfully learn about the assassin.
In month 5, week 4, choose the first two options when conversation with the potentate starts and do not mention the Copper King (the potentate and judge will see you as undermining their authority). Then, accuse the right person as the assassin. After that, choose one of the options that state you want more when given the key.

Path 2: Undermine
(Optional) In month 3, week 2, focus on the beggar and either successfully convince her to talk to you (answer based on current personality), or fail her first question and answer the next person you meet successfully, - AND/OR, have Harja believe that Soteris or Aquila are in love with them.
In month 4, week 2, choose your disguise for the palace by calling in favors (some help/full help), using the secret passage (some help/full help), or asking for advice (no help). Any disguise will work.
In month 4, week 3, be imprisoned at any point while in the palace. If you do the optional choice in month 3, then the fastest path would be the servant/scribe disguise and failing the guards’ question. If you decide not to do the month 3 choice, then you must meet with the potentate or judge but fail to convince them to let you leave and have low Harja relationship (-70).
In month 4, week 4, tell Harja about the prisoner (if you did the optional choice in month 4, then telling Harja is not required).
In month 5, week 2, speak to those at the meeting (not the merchant) and successfully learn about the mural.
In month 5, week 4, choose either of the last two options when conversation with the potentate starts and bring up the Copper King. (It’ll make him worried.) Then, accuse the right person as the assassin. After that, choose one of the options that state you want more when given the key.

And, once I get it fixed, you can sell items to the pawn shop. You can also find treasures if you go adventuring. You can also just… never pay the rent and see what happens.

Two of the spots that jump out at me the most are when the Housing Council agent we can confront pulls a knife on us and when we’re trying to sneak into the palace to learn about the assassin. Casting a curse or invisibility spell would seem like great ways to handle those situations. Offering minor magical services might also be neat when asking people for information or as a way to make up for late rent, and, of course, a bit of magic to lean on could be handy for any intimidation attempts. All just suggestions and I’m sure there are plenty of other places and ways sorcery can be implemented.

Small update! Selling clothes at the pawn shop, visiting the sorceress again after answering her questions, and the meeting under the bakery should now (hopefully) work! A few other bugs were also fixed, and achievements were slightly altered. Thanks again for the feedback!

Another small update: The first week of month six is now playable! It’s a short week but serves as the introduction to the upcoming festival planning and the conflict between the gods. There’s also a few hints as to who will help you plan the festival depending on choices throughout all the previous months.
