The Hero of Kendrickstone: Rescue a city held hostage by an evil wizard!

Which do you want to favor, combat or magic?

I’d personally go for the sword because…well, the book wants to eat your brain.

I think I’m going to go with Combat

I can imagine Isan snidely commenting that knights have little use for theirs anyway.

Can we grab the sword as Isan’s apprentice?

Yes.

Yes, as a mage you can dispell the illusion and the spirit still give you the sword.

To not be able to get the Sword, you must not be Mildred’s servant/squire, not have magic and have low compassion. This combination is the only one that can’t get the Sword.

Would have been nice to have some romance in this book.

It’s a series. The first romances start at the tail-end of Cryptkeepers.

Yes. I know and I still stand by my statement.

@Cataphrak mini question, does the narrative/story consider renown to also = positive public opinion? As in would people view your character less favourably if they have reduced renown or would they just treat you as any nameless random stranger/adventurer? I ask for the purposes of immersion with characters who would prefer to keep a low-profile and not be as well known(but I guess don’t want to be negatively taxed for that in terms of gameplay/unlocking certain story pathways in later instalments?) - Thanks for taking the time to read/reply!

Renown is how well known you are, for good or ill. Ideally, how people judge you should be based on your renown and the record of your previous actions.

Lmao ‘The Warband of the Mountain Blade’? Great reference you snuck in the latest Patreon article and it fits perfectly with the context. I’m still chuckling even five minutes after reading it.

Do we get to keep the cloak the Duke gives us if we go with his plan? I dont see it in the inventory or can we ask for it at the end?

It’s added on as a stat upgrade and not an actual item you receive kind of like the magic rings you can request from the wizard that also up your stats

Is there a way to increase magic with the knight as you’re mentor?

No, the best you can do is have 5 magic at the start and then have her as the mentor.

If you want a magical knight, it is better to stay with 4 prowess, 3 will and to get the wizard to be your mentor.

Ahh thanks. I was going for another build. But makes sense can’t get all that armor and magic lol at least not yet.

I actually think the best path for a magical knight is to surrender yourself to having only 1 in each magic lore skill in the first book (do start with 5 will) while taking Dame Mildred as your mentor. You end up being able to wield a real mix of magic and martial arts - you can track the razorclaw and defeat it with sorcery (make sure to have a point of morale), break into Lord Berwick’s house by magically sedating the guards, defeat his personal guard with your sword, save the knight and commoners on the road with your sling, use magic and your pure heart to claim the Sword of Kendrick Giant-Slayer, then use the magic Sword to defeat the evil wizard. Also, you get to actually be a knight (assuming you take that option at the end), and in the second book you have the opportunity to boost each magic lore stat to 2, making you a fully functional mage for that book, if not as powerful as one who trained under Isan.

I would say that starting with 4 prowess and training with Isan is for those who want a magical warrior, where the emphasis is much more on the magic. You spend most of the first book functioning as a wizard who simply happens to be pretty fit, then at the end you get yourself the Sword, which in this case I would recommend keeping, since a position as Court Wizard lends itself less to the magical warrior fantasy than having an enchanted sword (and you won’t have sacrifice anything to get yourself an ordinary sword if you do that). You end up with a lot less prestige and without the fancy armor and horse of the magical knight, but in terms of personal might the 4 in each magic stat you end up with and the Sword probably make the magical warrior superior.

@Cataphrak I have a few questions.

During the Korilandis Invasion, did the armies pass through the Iron Marches, or did they cross the mountains?

Also, the Patreon mentions that the Upper Marches are more or less wild land, but I assume there’s still a few settlements spread around, probably headed by adventurers, yeah?

The mountains are actually the safer option.

The big passes are well-marked, and not littered with weird Flowering Court ruins which may or may not incinerate half your force if one of them gets touched wrong.
