This is because “Teddy Bear” fits her personality the best and “Gambling” represents one of her alpha testers that gives her a hard time in testing… ![]()
@Eiwynn Yes, that’s right, you behave. (;
@feiwalin This is the best thing you could possibly have said about a game of mine. You have officially brightened my day with a degree of magnitude roughly comparable to a supernova. Thank you!
Achievements: I think this is accurate to the competition version–I’m not exactly sure which achievements are current. You can currently also reach The Ghost Breaker and Eye for an Eye.
The ‘Clue’ achievements were from a scene that I was obliged to pull before the competition, because I hadn’t quite enough time to finish it. They’ll go back after about three more chapters…I should actually comment those out for now, probably. Thank you for pointing it out!
There are also a handful of new achievements in the version I’m currently building…so more soon!
I’m very proud to say that all the achievements are actually titles of films made in or before the 1930s. Hunting around for appropriate titles was awfully fun.
Two of my favourites films are Murnau Nosferatu and Metropolis by Lang so if you do like Bladerunner a homenage to metropolis I will be really happy!!!
Wait, are you saying that you cut content off the submitted edition?!? @Lordirish , if this lady decides to participate again next year you might want to consider giving the judges a couple more weeks…
This is absolutely amazing by the way i was wondering is Anthony an RO and is there a way to have a relationship with reggie I figured out Edie (who is my book loving twin) the characters are amazing and we’ll developed
who leaves a slime in the middle of the road, honestly?
I think we could do with many more light hearted jaunts like this, not everything has to be po faced after all.
But down to the really important things, will there be a scene where I have the option to snark the words “ello beastie” before being swallowed by something with more teeth than the entire Osmond family?
@poison_mara Ahh, Nosferatu and Metropolis, beautiful…I’m considering pulling all the modern references and changing them to period-appropriate ones, in which case, yes! Also I love that you know old films too! That’s brilliantly exciting.
@Guhik Yes, I cut out two chapters, I think? One wasn’t fitting in where I wanted it to fit, and one I wasn’t able to finish before the deadline.
Fear not, however–next year, if I’m able to enter, I want to try to write a game that’s complete at only about 60,000 words, more like Choice of the Dragon. (That was actually my goal for this year…heh…) No more porridge brain for me, thank you.
Also @Eiwynn has been, rightly, preaching to me about conciseness ever since she read the first page of one of my works. I’m learning to be brief! I promise! Brevity is the soul of wit, right?
@Melzzi_d Thank you! I’m so delighted you enjoyed it!
Yes, Anthony and Reggie are both ROs, although they don’t have any sort of romance-heavy scenes yet (and Reggie in particular will require one specific condition to get his). I’m so glad you liked the characters! I had a lot of fun creating them.
@Johnny101 This question has occurred to me, too! It is, after all, a Stationary Slime. How did it get here? Why did it come? The world may never know!
I’m so delighted you liked it! Ooh, 30’s slang too, beautiful.
Now there’s a meta reference I could definitely see. A sort of Scylla. Hmm…
This is a great game with excellent world building! I’m so impressed you did all this in a month, my current working theory is that you bartered your soul in order to be able to write this much this well this quickly
I’ve played this game through a few (read:many) times, and I cannot wait to see how it progresses. Is this game going to be in open beta here in the forums then?
Thank you! Being enthusiastically Anglican, I value my soul so there was no soul-trading involved. There was however a terribly patient and wonderfully thorough alpha team, several very long nights, and two very forbearing children involved.
Yes, I will eventually post an open beta here once I’ve tied a few knots and finished the two chapters currently in development. There is currently a closed alpha team helping as I sort through some details and mechanics.
And thank you very much for the kind words!
Needs more Sarah, at any rate.
This is wonderful <3 Light hearted and fun and vivid to say the least ^.^ Can’t believe you did all this in a month :o Glances at Be the Witch ;~; Aww, Anthony though <3 I don’t think I have been able to cuddle with a character so much in such a small spand of time!
Update! The Beastie Watch.
There are about 40,000 words of new content, including a new introduction, and a new battle! And a save system!
I have also expanded some of the old options, added hidden stats for the Rascal’s personality, and fleshed out some of the existing scenes.
Warning: The cliff-hanger is not, in fact, resolved–I moved it back to where it was originally supposed to be (which is three chapters in the future or so). But it will be some day!
I hope you enjoy–as always feedback, suggestions, comments, praise, or constructive criticism all welcome! And thanks as always to my fabulous alpha team. Without them, we’d be short an entire chapter, several weapons, a good deal of personality, and one R.O…
@Jinx_the_Atomic_Cat Delighted to oblige–try after losing the newest battle for additional Sarah content!.
@Noctis Thank you so much! I wasn’t nearly so quick when I first started using ChoiceScript over a year ago, believe me…there’s a definite learning curve, but I did improve with time. I look forward to seeing how Be the Witch develops, too!
And I’m so glad you’re fond of Anthony! That would make him smile.
Great update, a lot of good things foreshadowed and bringing into play… seems there was some tweaking of stats too but since you don’t list these it might be my imagination… I dunno.
Oh that makes much more sense x3 I thought I was just being slow. As for Be the Witch, I literally spent five hours coding it today x.x It looks pretty mangled and definitely the work of an armature but I some how made it playable ^.^; But I’m only on part two of path one of chapter one and I already racked up 16,000 words due to my poor coding x.x Chapter two will hopefully turn out better - or at least neater looking - in that regard. Thanks for the support <3
Hehe he’s easily one of my favorite RO’s right now <3 I somehow managed to get his relationship status up even higher than my last play through :o He is just such a cutie <3
But I wonder, will the events effect of story effect with starting scene by the end? Like who you’re with (the car scene for example) and what not? Or is that just place to start us off? And the flash back within a flashback xD
Oh, and on the topic of relationships; I find it interesting how I can get Philly and Reggie up past the 70s but after the time skip they’re down in the sixties (but I ended back up in the eighties with Philly by the end of my play though). Is there a way to prevent the relations from declining or are they meant to do that?
Also, loved the fight scene
And the bird xD I have a feeling she’s going to play an important role :3
No–not slow at all! Besides, writers all have their own paces. It took me over a year to get my other WiP to the same place where Beastie Watch is now. It does get easier. (:
Regarding the introduction: Well, who is actually in that scene will depend on your choices during the game. (:0 Any guesses?
Regarding flashbacks:
You’ll eventually end up in that first scene again, shortly before the end of the story…and I’m hoping to rewrite the middle section so that there’s only one flashback in the entire game.
The story has, er, sort of gone through several layers of writing. Originally I was just going to start at the Poisonous Intent and have done with it!
The world building wasn’t solid enough there, though, and my alpha testers were very helpfully telling me that I was being confusing and spastic–and they were quite right. So I built outwards from there.
Regarding character stats: There are a few choices immediately before and after the time skip that affect their opinions of you, so that would have been what happened, I’m thinking. The characters all have their own opinions about your character, depending on the Rascal’s personality and actions.
Regarding the new chapters: I’m so glad you liked Monsieur Calamari! The bird is actually completely optional–if you lose the squid battle, you get to go to a completely different scene. : D Cos I always lose battles For variety and replayability, you know.
Thank you so much for the positive feedback; I really appreciate it. And I had fun answering your questions, too! (: I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed Beastie Watch so far, and I hope you’ll enjoy the next instalment when it’s finished.
How are you getting Phil to like you? Tell me your secrets. She’s the one I have the most trouble with.
I dunno. I guess being polite, appreciating the car, and being intuitive puts you on her good side :3
Daw, wish you could romance Clivey the little alien psychic is adorable
Cucumbers…and spicy chili’s? Well. That’s an interesting combo.
I suspect it has to do with the limited palette options available to a vegetarian.
