The Beast in the Castle (WIP 09.25.16)

Really like the demo! It’s nice that even though both of the MC sisters aren’t very mature in dealing with unexpected poverty, they express it very differently.
Most of all though, I like the MC, in that she can be nuanced enough depending on how one wants to play her.

Fair enough the only transgender people I’ve had any personal experience with did fall into that category, both in my ongoing involvement in the local gay rights movement and in my brief political career. Though in hindsight maybe it makes sense that the trans folk wanting to physically transition were one of the more heartwrenching “lobby” groups I met with back then.

Seems nice so far. I know gender is locked, but I hope we get some character creation.

This reply brought my father’s ship back, my family closer together, and helped us get a better life :sparkles::pray:
And the theme on who’s really the beast :eyes::eyes::eyes::eyes:

Glad to see you’re still writing CS.
I love my MC already, she’s gonna be scheming and plotting all the time.
I really enjoyed the two sisters and their distinct personalities. Yiana was especially fun to hate.
I’m always here for more female gender locked games so I’m loving this.

Seems interesting can’t wait for more

Hello friends! Hola Amigo! Bonjour les amis!

have to say about the game is that it would be ideal to choose your gender then it would appeal to more people. Also, I realise that it is based heavily on beauty and the beast, which is great but it wouldn’t really effect the game much if there was a gender choice

One last thing, would it be too much to ask if we could choose our name ? I mean, I personally would like to choose my own name rather than play as rose who is not me .

Anyway there are no spelling mistake as far as I can see so pretty great in that are, so yeah keep up the good work .

Well it may be necessary for plot reasons, but even so maybe we could choose a middle name or nickname that we’d rather be called?

Personally, I thought what you had here was amazing. I normally don’t mind Role Playing female characters as long as the personality is “malleable”. ;D

Consider me hooked!
I dont mind at all the fact that its genderlocked to female considering theres already an endless sea of genderlocked male only games out there
I cant wait to see just how much of a stubborn mule we can be!

Just want to say, thanks for all of your opinions, but I’m not budging on the genderlock. I have a plan, and I want to go through with this. Adding a male option would be annoying for me and make it less likely that I finish.

@Bagelthief I hope that was a pleased MMM, haha.

Oh man, oh man oh man. So do I. I feel like I’ve said this a million times before, but I’m a big fan of morally gray choices, and, uh, situations that can be interpreted in different ways by different people.

I’m trying very hard not to spoil things :relieved:

@ab2wus Draaaaama! I hear tears are good for your skin. And your line was actually very poignant, 10/10.

@Moferiah Yeah, your sisters see things very differently! Tale changes depending on the teller, etc etc  If you ever develop any head cannons or would like more options for the MC please let me know!

@Shawnheatherly If by character creation you mean describing physical appearance, there’s going to be very little of that I’m afraid. The protag is mostly defined by what she thinks and feels.

I died, and it’s this quote’s fault. Watch out for curses from the Smoking Isles…

@anon57826008 Apologies, but that’s not an option!

@attolia I love writing different scenarios way to much too quit you guys! Thank you :kissing_cat:

@Harley_Robin_Evans Thank you very much!

Hahaha, I’m not going to lie, I was thinking of keeping the protag nameless as a ~metaphor~ or something. But you do get to choose your name when you get to the castle.

@COGZealot I’m glad you’re flexible haha. I myself like to play characters with a mix of different genders!

@BoisterousBumblebee I hope I can keep you hooked :smirk_cat: There seems to be more female gender lock on the forums, but you’re right, the world outside COG is a sea of mildly stubbled male.

I fully support this. I feel bad, I used to suggest that people considered creating games with a gender choice. I found that generally speaking those who were writing solely male protagonists wouldn’t budge. Those who were writing female protagonists, would add in male options, and then lose interest in the project and not complete it.

Are there any Hosted Games gender-locked female yet? I know there’s quite a few more locked male. There was also a lack of female authors when it comes to Hosted Games, although I think it’s slightly better than it was.

Anyway keep writing the game for yourself! Get it finished!

Awww! But what if I want to remain nameless, and called solely by a pet name, or my physical appearance.

So for my MC I made her the strong, selfless, and practical older sister. I will put up a spoiler so I don’t ruin the story for anyone.

For the first choice I said she doesn’t think about how she used to live because there isn’t a point to do so because it will not help their current situation. She deeply cares for her family, and even though her father has let them down on multiple occasions she still loves him and doesn’t hold a grudge against him. Which also means she helped him for the second choice because she knows how much pain his back causes him. While her sisters asked for gifts from their father she wants nothing. She cares more about the welfare of her family and would rather provide for them first before taking anything for herself, and she works as a hunter to do so. As the older sibling she knows how best to look after her sisters. She held Sina and comforted her until she felt better and reasoned with Yiana to get her to do her chores. When told about the job by the butcher she decided while it sounded nice, she couldn’t leave her family to pursue it. They needed her too much right now.

I was half expecting some option to ask for a pet. Too derailing?

I actually have a kind of growing collection of Beauty and the Beast retellings. I’ve been hoping to find a multiple choice version for a while.

Hahaha, is this a real request or a joke? Because if it’s a real request I can try to find a way. I really wanted that nameless protag…

And yes, a thousand times yes on the rest of what you said! There are places where it’s best to compromise, but a piece of fiction that I am writing in my own free time for the enjoyment of others is not one of them.

I don’t believe there are any female hosted games? There’s Guen, ofc, but it’s not officially published.

@Prof_Chaos I love your MC! She closely resembles one of my player test characters. That sort of route includes some of my favorite scenes in the demo.

Well, I mean, there is the beast…

That’s a real request. Look at the protagonists of Fairy Tales.

Beauty and the Beast. Sleeping Beauty. Snow White, Rose Red, The Little Mermaid. Goldilocks. All of them named for their appearance, as if they don’t have names of their own. They’re Beauty, they’re Princess, they’re all interchangeable and don’t have names of their own. (Sure Disney gives them names, but Belle still means Beauty). I think it’s one of those strong themes of fairy tales, the lack of distinctive names, there women defined by their looks to the extent that is what they are called. And I wonder, do they actually have real names, do people just choose not to use them? Are these women trying to carve themselves an identity, a name, but no one will listen?

Most Disney movies give a pet as comic relief! I think Beauty and the Beast just has the father’s dog? (Does Disney have that?) And of course it’s animated furniture.

Ha!

Oh this is such a nice idea! I love reimagings and retellings of fairy tales, and beauty and the beast has always been one of my favorites! All the ways you can play the MC already is also nice, especially since I prefer being able to play more neutral characters personality wise in the beginning to get a hold on what’s going on and I’m so glad I was able to!
I don’t mind not having the character named, it kinda fits into the fairy tale motif and all. It could even be like her name is only said at the very end of the game, if at all? Ahh, anyway, I only found like really small things, but I don’t think I saw anyone else point them out so

“Sina and you father are sitting at the wobbly table, the cooking pot between them.”
“It’s times like this that you remember how different you life used to be.”

both these are on the page you make the first choice and

“You rub her back in soothing circles and murmur sweet things. It doesn’t take long. Soon her sobs stop, and all that’s left are sad snuffles. He arms curl around you as she says”

is when you choose ‘“Poor Sina, come here.” You lean forward to hold her.’

I was kind of intending to go for an adventurous animal lover. Funny someone mentioned the Disney version because Belle seemed to have traces of that but it didn’t come up much in the Beast’s castle.
I was also thinking of being like the guy from Big Fish (the movie) which had their reaction to a werewolf be to play with it instead of a fear response.
