The Bar on the Abyss - WIP [240k words] [Updated November 9th]

The matchmaking oppression starts in chapter 3. You won’t miss it I promise!

And fyi Yaga actually got more than a few votes in the romance poll  Granny still got it!

Hi, I hope I’m not bothering you, but I have a question and I don’t know if someone kind could help me. I saved my game but I can’t access my progress. I don’t know if I have to do something special to access it or is it just my mistake, I would appreciate answers

Hi there! Not bothering at all  I’m pretty sure the save system in dashington uses your browser’s cookies, so if you deleted them that might be the reason for losing your saves :frowning:

When did you made those saves? If it’s from a long time ago they might got deleted after the 2.0 update.

Usually what I see from updates is saves loading but messing things up as you play because of missing variables and such, or showing up with error messages in the list.

I don’t think an update would make them disappear, unless maybe you changed the name you gave to the “*sm_init” command which I only believe might make it so the game can’t find your saves.

It would be more likely that the saves got erased by clearing up browser cache/cookies.

I will wingman my bartend buddy a ghost knight GF every single time and no one can stop me.

Greetings, patrons of TBOTA!

The bad news: Tomorrow, I’ll upload an important update to TBOTA that might break previous saves a bit. I’m not 100% sure it will, but I don’t want to surprise anyone and want to give you a bit of a headstart!

The good news: If your Death goes by they/them, they’ll actually have plural verbs

Yes, the bug that has been hunting my game since its conception has finally been solved, with the help of the incredible @bl00dragon :heartpulse:

There might be some missing verbs I missed, but from now on, all descriptions of Death should match their gender correctly (and lmk if you find any other pesky errors)

Oh, and… work on Chapter 5 is going very well

I’ve seen this game a few times now but have only now decided to give it a try, and it is fantastic so far! I’m only at the beginning, but I’m excited to read on.

I’m curious, does everyone have a method of death that they find to be their favorite character/story-wise? Murder seems like it would be really interesting, especially if you hold onto the anger over your death.

Is it okay to call it murder when the system has failed you and yours? Because that’s definitely what my main MC would think. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you, happy you’re enjoying it! I’d love to read your thoughts as you progress through the story.

Interesting results so far :eyes: Wonder what tumblr will say actually…

I highly doubt someone depressed enough to eat a bullet would be so sanguine at the prospect of an eternity of forced labor as a service employee

The narration spends a lot of time telling me how I feel. Not even one negative choice past the beginning.

Yeah, yeah you get mind controlled by something when you try to say no but suddenly I go from “life is meaningless so I’ll just kill myself” to “boy howdy I sure am chipper and can’t wait to make everyone happy” within like two paragraphs. Tonal whiplash.

Not even one “I don’t care”

Hell not even a neutral reaponse after the initial introduction to the bar. Once you get to the hiring section you’re on railroad tracks as the story just does what it wants.

The addition of a choice as simple as “whatever, you’re all hired.” Would have been nice. Rather than conducting full interviews I just skipped anyway because I didn’t care about these random nobodies.

Then the narration simply tells me how happy I am to be here and how optimistic I am about this bar when that’s definitely not what I chose, so I just closed the game at that point.

Can’t even be suicidally depressed and view it as a punishment. Nope. “Interactive” fiction where the story makes your choices for you.

Thank you for the feedback!

The grief paths for the MC, as well as the causes of death, are new additions to the game. I’m still updating and adding choices for them. So there are a lot of areas that will change in the future, for example, the initial choice of refusing to take the job

I am however curious about your criticism regarding the introspection parts, as I feel I did added more than only positive or optimistic options for the MC.

Either way, I’m planning another overhaul after I finish the current update, as I have a few more ideas to add to the previous chapters. As I review them, I will definitely keep your feedback in mind. I hope you’ll consider trying the game again in the future as I develop it further, and I hope you enjoy it more then. Thanks for reading and spending time to write your review!

Hello everyone! I just posted an important poll on Tumblr regarding the next update, and I would really appreciate if you took the time to vote (or add your thoughts here if you can’t)

Thank you!

What would your MC wish for if they could?

So far it seems that the majority voted for the 2.5 overhaul to be prioritized. Thank you for helping me decide!

Already have a few additional ideas and will start this week, aiming for a mid-December launch.

In the upcoming 2.5 update, I’m introducing a contract that you will be able to read and sign before accepting the job at the bar in Chapter 1 (this is a job offer after all, right?).

This contract includes… fascinating new details and, most notably, your pension plan—a wish granted by the Council of Nine.

Would you wish for resurrection? Meaning? Revenge?

And, most importantly, would you even exist long enough to make that wish? :eyes:

Can reincarnation be a part of those wishes? Some people may not want to resurrect so much as simply try again.

It is one of the options! Fits a bargaining path MC very well imo.
