Since making my last post, I’ve gotten around to starting Blood Money (I’ve got an endless queue and a limited wallet), and it’s gonna make my Top Five for sure. Just thought that’s a bit relevant considering I’ve got another of @HarrisPS’s games already in my Top!
Blood Money scratches a lot of itches: urban fantasy, crime families, ghost stories, and the potential to be a dramatic treacherous prick? I’m sold.
Tin Star is still my favorite over all, but in no particular order:
Top 3 CoG:
Tally Ho
Choice of Magics
Choice of the Star Captain
Top 3 HG:
Tin Star
The Harbinger’s Head
The Parenting Simulator
Honorable Mention: Way Walkers: University. It was one of the first CoG/HG games I bought when the games were available on the E-ink Kindles, and when the third comes out I’ll be buying it again so I can have the whole series on one platform.
I’m actually really emotional about this. I was thirteen when I started playing Choice of Games–I enjoyed it through middle school, high school, and I will be finishing college next year. I used to play these games while flying back and forth to my mom and dad. It was my best escape for years of my life. CoG has been so different from every other media I enjoy–because through these forums I have had an opportunity to feel like I’ve truly gotten to know the people in the company. It’s like a family here, and I love it so much.
So many people here have poured so much of themselves in their works, and I love seeing it, and how much their writing has evolved. I think I’m gonna cry.
I fucking love you guys.
Anyway, my top three favorite CoG games
-
Choice of the Vampire
It’s a classic for a reason. This game really appealed to me and got me into this company, so obviously it has to be my number one. It’s just perfect for the nerdy goth punk I was in my youth (and secretly still am). -
Choice of the Deathless
Cover’s metal as hell. I love it. - Eagle’s Heir
Everything about this game is over the top, fun, and gripping. Just all around perfect.
Honorary mention for a hosted game goes out to A Study In Steampunk.
I am not sure whether you would include Hosted Games, so i will separate them in 2 categories
Hosted Games : Tin Star, Great Tournament 1&2, , Zombie Exodus 1&2, Infinity Series ,Fallen Hero ,Guardian of Sun and Moon, Totem Hero, Butler did it
Choice of Games : Heart of The House, Broadway 1849 , Slammed ! , Tally Ho,Choice of Rebels , Creme de la Creme and Choice of Magic
Among those title , Tin Star is my top HG title while Slammed ! Is my top CoG title
I haven’t been able to play a majority of CoG and HG games, but of the ones I have, these are my favorites.
COG
1. Choice of Robots
No CoG or HG title has made me feel more than this one. It gets extra bonus points for interesting mechanics around the robot and resulting business, as well as clear demarcations for the major branching late in the story that encourage the reader to go back and try to get the other ones.
2. Slammed!
A love letter to wrestling, but even without that, it is such a great story with twist and turns that actually made me gasp. The number of potential endings is impressive on its own.
3. Tally Ho
No other title has made me laugh as much as this one, but it also features really well defined characters that despite their flaws, I couldn’t help but root for. I also love that no matter how you play, the story still allows you to be successful in some way or another, even when failing.
4. Creme de la Creme
Another title that features great multi-layered characters that each have their own flaws. School-centered titles always seem to hit the mark here, but this one went the extra mile in building a world while also somehow producing a self-contained main plot that wrapped up nicely and creating new open-ended futures for the major characters.
5. Drag Star!
I wish this one had received more attention when it first came out. Similar to Slammed!, it is a love letter to its subject matter, but the story is also a lot fun with a great sense of humor. The variety in the MC design is outstanding, with no ‘perfect’ way to play.
HG
1. Tin Star
This to me is the gold standard of what a CoG or HG title can be. It’s got great characters, a great story and great mechanics. Hell, you can kill most of the major characters when first meeting them, and the story somehow doesn’t feel any less when doing so. I also appreciate the way the epilogue is laid out, with choices and details one what happens to each major character.
2. Sabres/Guns of Infinity
The pinnacle of world building, these two are what I consider to also be the best designed games available here. I’ve played through these more than 100 times, and somehow I am still discovering a new batch of flavor text or character interaction. It is also another example where there is no one right way to play, and the definition of what can be considered success is left of the reader. Even though the series isn’t complete, I’m including these two as they comprise a complete self-contained story.
3. Zombie Exodus
This will probably be replaced by ZE: Safe Haven once that story is complete due to the massive variety of character creation in that one, but the original is a great example of how to do serialized storytelling in the confines of Choicescript. I really appreciate the different ways the choices made during the game feed into the many branching endings.
4. Parenting Simulator
The success of this game makes me hopeful we will get more slice of life stories. I love this story because it has such a good heart and made me really care about my MC’s child. There is also a mix of bittersweet and pride at the end when the child isn’t exactly what I hoped they would be, but at least they are a functioning adult. So true to life.
5. Life of a Mobster
More game-y than the other stories on this list, it still is a lot of fun and an example of where transparency of how stat checks are passed or failed can increase replayability. The variety of endings is also a bonus, but a playthrough isn’t so long that it becomes tiresome trying to achieve each one.
Honorable mention goes to Fallen Hero, Wayhaven and Community College Hero, which will each likely deserve a spot on here once those series are complete.
I’ve played lots and lots and CoG and HG, here are the stories thatI absolutely liked.
-
Fallen Hero (The writing and the characters are so amazing, when I first played it I was on the edge of my seat everytime.
-
Hero Rise Trilogy
-
Sordwin
-
ZE and ZE: Safehaven
-
Infinity Saga (Shoutout to the author who made an impressive story with equally impressive lore.
-
Pon Para (The author is amazing when it comes to writing)
-
Lost Heir Trilogy
-
Community College Hero
-
Tin Star
-
Choice of Rebels
(Life of a Merc I will also include because it is the game that introduced me to this community.)
Ooh.
That’s a tough one. There’s a lot of good ones out there…can’t say i have favorites, but there are ones i’ve enjoyed more than others, some of them would be…
From CoG:
- Magician Workshop.
- Tower behind the moon.
- Stronghold: A Hero’s fate.
- Choice of Rebels.
- The Hero of Kendrickstone.
As for hosted games, not even going to bother creating the list. Too many of those.
-
Tin Star - Most detailed game with the most variety of choices, which impressed me…
I also love the epilogue’s song! - The Samurai of Hyuga series- I love roleplaying as a samurai. I also love Jun, as a character!
- Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven
- Choice of Robots - I love creating my own robots!
- Fallen Hero: Retribution
- Choice of the Deathless
These are currently my favourites.
I wont seperate these since I rarely pay attention to what label the game is under and look at all of the labels as the same company technically.
Slammed! - Im a big wrestling nerd and just expected a surface level game that just focused on how it appears on TV, but instead got what I finally wanted a game to cover which was the “inside wrestling” part which is kayfabe and it being a co-operative performance mostly between performers and it went in-depth. Really showed how much the writer did research/knew the business.
Tin Star - Great and under-used time period, characters, and ways you could play your marshal. I really liked how companion characters felt really well written and all had their own life they were trying to live. The whole game truly felt like you were building your legend as a sort of iconic name that comes to mind usually for that time like Earp or Holiday.
Im just on the first two games lol so im just gonna speed through from here even though I can go on forever about why I love each of them. No order:
Summary
- A Wise Use of Time
- Zombie Exodus and Safe Haven
- The Wayhaven Chronicles
- Tally Ho
- Unnatural
- Killing Time
- Life of a Mobster
- Life of a Wizard
- Blood Money
- The Superlatives; Aetherfall specifically
- Choice of Kung Fu
- The Parenting Simulator
- Breach: The Archangel Job
- Crème de la Crème
Not sure if we are counting them but some WIPs:
Summary
- The Odessa Dating Games
- Triaina Academy
- Monsters of New Haven High
- Street Jam
- Hong Kong Blood Opera
Is Shattered Worlds good? I came across some reviews stating that it is bland unlike the first installment.
Ehh…I dont want to get too much into it here but I would say just give the demo a try and see for yourself. For me though, I rather just pretend that universe wrapped up in the first one.
First time posting here, my top ten CoGs in no specific order are as follows;
Choice of Robots
Choice of Rebels
Choice of the Vampire
Tally Ho
Choice of Romance
Crème de la Crème
Choice of Kung Fu
Choice of the Deathless

Honorable mention goes to Choice of Broadsides, which was one of the first CoGs I played extensively on my old Kindle e-reader.
Ok, I don’t normally do these things, but here I go! (in no particular order, just going through my phone)
Last Wizard
CCH
Oedipus Rex
Lost Heir
Life of a Wizard
Choice of Rebels
Choice of the Dragon
Choice of the Vampire
Draconic Challenges (technically a WIP, hope it gets finished one day…)

A Pirate’s Pleasure
Heart of the House
Choice of the Deathless
Heroes Rise,Choice of Magic/Robots,Silverworld…has it really been ten years?
Blood Money, Fallen Hero, and I Cyborg are my absolute top 3. I also love both Deathless games, Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven, A Study in Steampunk, Asteroid Run, and Heart of the House. As this is a ten year look back, I might as well mention my soft spot for Affairs of the Court and the earlier Heroes Rise games as they’re what really got me into COG. I’m so excited for the upcoming games, especially with the introduction of Heart’s Choice!
I have played CoG/HG for a long time
-
My most favorite CoGs:
Choice of Romance (My first choice game)
Slammed!
Choice of the Deathless
Heroes Rise series
Psy High
Choice of Robots
MetaHuman Inc

My most favorite HGs:
Zombie Exodus series
Tin Star
Fatehaven
Life of a Mobster
The Lost Heir series
The Evertree saga
Wayhaven Chronicles
Fallen Hero
Hope for more great games in the coming year.
Happy new year
For me…
5 Affairs of the court (I loved Don Torres… I might have been the only one lol)
MOAR!
4 The Sea Eternal (The game just felt mystical from start to finish and mournful but I didn’t even know what we were mourning for the longest time)
3 Avatar of the wolf (I absolutely love the world this story crafted and I loved sacrificing myself to bring the wolf back every time I played… and Bear and Hawk’s reactions when I asked them if I could is one of my favorite moments in COG history
2 Heroes Rise (This was the second thing I read on Choice and I still love it) Bright Magic ftw!
1 Creatures such as we (Some four years ago a friend said hey there’s this app called Creatures such as we, it’s like a book but you get to make choices. I mean to this day I feel it’s the best game in any collection, they didn’t even need a stat screen to make my head hurt from choices. This is hands down the story I reccomend when someone asks why I’ve been hunched over my phone for hours on end… get it cause I’m reading.)
I’ve read almost all of the CoG and Hosted Games and at the moment, my top 5 in order are:
- Study in Steampunk
- Fallen Hero
- Archangel Job
- Wayhaven
- Choice of Romance/Intrigues
