An IF game heavily based off and inspired by CSM and roleplays between me and my best friend. I’m developing this game mainly for her, but she encouraged me to share it, and while I admittedly didn’t mean to release the character creation demo so early, I figured it’d be a good idea to keep it up for early feedback.
I’d also like to make it very clear that the player character is not a child and that they are referred to as a child in a religious sense or to refer to their title (Blood Child). Every major character shown is also an adult unless stated otherwise.
Setting: Medieval Fantasy-- there’s a fair bit of kingdoms, dragons, and all other sorts of fantastical creatures lying around
Genres: Dark fantasy, thriller, mystery
Potential content warnings: Heavy religious themes, implied sexual content and themes, violence, demons & the occult, mental and physical trauma, war, references to/implied torture (past and present), nonsexual/casual nudity (prologue only)
Plot Summary
An order of Devil Hunters known as Blood Children do everything in their power to protect their lands, even if it means consorting with the very devils they seek to kill.
You are a newly appointed Blood Child, who’s life was thrust into disorder when they found themselves forcefully allied with fellow Children in the order. Embarking as an escort on fellow Blood Child Laif’s pilgrimage, you unwillingly discover uncomfortable truths and disgusting horrors.
Characters
Laif Deubelbeiss - M
An optimistic, if not outright delusional young man. He believes that devil may be reasoned with, even if their previous nature has shown otherwise. So long as devils are treated with respect, it reasonable to assume that they will show the same; at least, that is what he believes.
Hailing from Freeland in one of the anarchic countries, it is no wonder he was capable of forming such unrealistic beliefs.
Will you support him in his childish idealism or will help him understand the true nature of devils?
Aadya the Gun Fiend - F
A captured fiend forced into subservience through the Blood Children’s oath of service. She has no visible eyes, the front of her head being the barrel of flintlock pistol. She is docile-- albeit bratty and restless-- and despite the shifty looks from your fellow companions, you are certain you can control her… or is she more of a loose canon than your masters has assumed?
Regardless, you are stuck with her until the end of Laif’s pilgrimage. Shall you treat her as other fiends ought to be treated or will show her a sliver of humanity?
Tydal Heiland - F
A strange, reserved woman with strange eyes and a detached beauty. She prefers to hide her cool gaze under long hooded robes, and yet, you cannot help but feel as if you have seen her before. Hells, you are not even quite sure if she is a true Blood Child or a bored priest who chose to accompany Laif on his pilgrimage.
Will you leave her unquestioned or shall you find why she is so desperately familiar to you?
Lazard - N
A masked leper who’s more business than they are chatty. Their vizard hides all but their eyes-- a creepy visage and a shady figure at that. It’s questionable as to why a person such as them were chosen to accompany Laif; were they friends? Brothers? Or, God of Truth forgive you, a simple mistake from your masters?
Nobody gets along with Lazard, but they seem to be taking some sort of cold interest you.
Xaver Eckielberg - M
An estranged noble man from noble house Eckielberg. He wears a special set of spectacles, most likely stolen from his father when he ran away. He was once next-in-line to be the head of his house, but suddenly decided against it.
He sought the freedom of a Blood Child, and the masters accepted him. He is but a naive Child-- he understands not the responsibilities he has forsaken, nor the ones he has undertaken.
Will you allow him to be swallowed into the abyss of hunger or shall you pull him from the depths of his naivety?
Mechanics
A Blood Child is nothing without their dealings with devils. Weigh the risks and gains contracts at Devil Shrines to enhance your power further, but be careful of what deals you choose to take.
Devils are shrewd creatures that seek to steal your every being-- do not get comfortable with them, no matter how polite they may present themselves.
Other mechanics include:
- Flavor stats & skillchecks: your stats will not bar you from story progression, nor will you be punished for failing skillchecks
- Combat: fight against devils and even other humans (NOTE: combat is optional as you will be traveling with a relatively large group regardless of your companion count, if you’re playing a non-combat focused build, you will be able to skip combat or talk your way out dangerous encounters)
- Companions: travel with up to three companions for extra dialogue and interactions whenever you have split from your main group
- Inventory system: keep track of story-related or miscellaneous items for trade
Romance
Many of your companions and even certain other characters within the game can be pursued to reveal another facet of their character. Be the one to heal their broken hearts, or break them all over again.
All romances are optionable, but add extra flavor to characters. Some romances may also unlock special content.
There are no selectable sexual/romantic orientations, but you can choose to pursue and reject any romancable companion (or go through queerplatonic routes for asexual characters).
