I want to make something absolutely clear: Criticizing a game and giving one’s opinion of it does not “ruin it” for anyone else.
Do not try to shame others into silence by insinuating that by doing so they are “ruining it”.

I am revising the trigger warnings screen since it seems to be causing some back and forth here. I got the help of @Blattella @Fujcog @trevers17 who each expressed negative feelings about it and the three all think the new screen should be less upsetting for people.
Also, as some people have touched on, the trigger warnings screen is made within the style of the narrator of the game, it was not meant to throw shade at anyone but I understand some people thought differently and I’m sure this new one will help you feel better since it was created with three forum people who felt the same way. Now let’s all please stop any back and forth with others over this.
I also have to say I agree with sentiment that the description of the game really doesn’t represent it well. It makes it sound more like a hyper realistic and drama-filled adventure through the hood… When it’s more like a comical and satrical ride. I’d compare it like, it makes it seem like you’re going to get Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, but you get Def Jam.
In Mortal Kombat, two fighters go in saying things like “I will avenge my father!” Or “Lin Kuai scum!”
But in Def Jam, you got an exchange going like: Method Man: “Hey, yo Red!”
Redman: “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah whatup?!?”
Method Man: “You see what I see?”
Redman: “Yeah, I see what you see!!! I see a fool who about to get his ass kicked!!!”
Redman: “We gon finish this shit tonight little bitch! Imma cut your eyes out in put em on my knees and call you kneezy.”
Those both were actual quotes BTW. That type of over the top stuff was all over not just Def Jam but the rappers in it, as back then twenty gold chains and nine gold rings was considered normal rapper style. SJ acts as ludicrous as the rappers did in DJ back then if not more, and it seems the description is not representing that right. That needs to change and I’m putting my attention all on that.
Now let’s get to the mentions.
@ClaimedMinotaur Yeah you’re right, the narrator is supposed to emulate Blaze AKA Method Man so he expresses what you think he’d say in a situation like that, as this game doesn’t take itself that seriously you shouldn’t take him seriously. But Blaze is not me inserting myself, just have to add that, his words and reactions should not be taken as you interacting with me lol imagine Method Man’s face when you hear the narrator chime in.
And thanks man it’s been a while, I still remember you from the original thread a year ago, glad you ain’t forgotten SJ! Or my insane way of writing it.
@TemplarFounder Yeah you right, and I understand you thought you were in for a bit of a different experience. But looks like you still saw the Def Jam in it and enjoyed what it was, that’s epic. You touched upon how a lot of people are expecting stuff like Fight Club and such, yeah Def Jam definitely wasn’t your standard street fighting game in the serious and realistic aspect, I think that’s where the disconnect is going. But glad you’re enjoying your old feelings of Def Jam!
As for the minimal personality and interaction, that too came from Def Jams hard focus on fighting as compared to the story and romance, but if you find a need for more interaction I’ll be sure to add more RO cutscenes in the next update, ya know after I get this description and trigger stuff done. Thanks for giving me your honest feelings, good and bad, while being civil and neutral.
Well that’s all the mentions I see for right now, but let’s some stuff from the original thread you all may need.
Poe: D’oh
Jane: Don’t get careless
Number one: Use your best stats
Jenkins: Your weapon will determine your win
Royal: No losing here
Spike: If you don’t have speed, cheat
Danny: Know your wrestling style
Fran: Her description hides her weakness
Lucha: Your endurance will save you, if not, a background will
Sascha: The best defense is a good defense stat followed by an offense stat
Vampirette: Charge or wait, then choose death
Streak: Know your costume
Kennedy: The answer is right in front of your face, it is something both Streak and the vampirette would be weak to. Think.
Naruku: And everyone was kung-fu fighting!
Keiji: Endurance will not help you here
Grandmaster: Balance 10 in every way
Rich tag: Who is more unorthodox?
Leather tag: Who is the toughest person here?
Ghetto tag: Be brave.
Totsu: No one can last alone.
Royal: Think hard then choose.
Final Boss: You better hope you’ve brought your stats up, buster.

Now my review:
So, like I said, I played the demo and was eager to play the full version. I played, purchased, became a stripper, admitted my love to Royal, died twice, then the game ended.
This game has a lot of replayability. There’s a lot of different routes, choices to make, etc. I actually won most of my fights until I started nearing the end, which was rather annoying, as I thought my stats were decent enough to avoid this from happening. Usually stat heavy games aren’t my favorites and this game reminded me of why. Still, out of my stubborness, I will be replaying until I win against the final boss, which is more than I can say about other games where I die before I make it all the way though.
The cutscene when you’re in heaven is absolutely genius. Seriously, I thought I was dreaming during the whole thing. One of my favorite non-standard game overs ever. Too bad I died shortly after being revived…but the whole scene was so absurd I couldn’t be too mad about it.
As far as romance goes, not really sure why there are so many ROs. I feel like this game could’ve been stronger if there were a handful to choose from and try and romance. I genuinely only like Royal and maybe two other ROs. Hell, if this game came down to choosing between good fighting/plot/stats and no romance, versus good romance but crappy fighting/plot/stats, I’d choose the former…and this is coming from a girl who has purchased every romance heavy game on all three platforms and is writing one myself.
This game is not for everybody, as you can read above or on any app with reviews. It might be too outlandish for some, too gritty for others, but personally, I enjoyed it. I do wish winning the matches was a bit easier, but hey, that’s what the reset option and play again button is for.
naturally, i too also chose the stripper career
@Tevin No I know that’s not how you actually talk (thank god), but you seem to like writing your narrators as fourth-wall-breaking buffoons. So in each of your stories I basically just imagine Deadpool attempting to roleplay.
Edit: Now all I can think of is Deadpool sitting on his couch playing Def Jam and acting it out as he plays
I’m just curious about something here. The warnings talk about forced sexual activity, but i’ve played through the game several times and haven’t seen anything like this. Does that only happen in the straight option? So far I have only done gay characters, which in my opinion needed more romance options lol.
Congrats on the release! I have to say I had not played the game in a long time as a WIP so finally getting to play again and seeing everything that was added has been great! I have to say though I was surprised it was out and when I opened my email and saw the promotional cover art for it, I instantly started smiling and thinking of the glory days of DJ: FFNY.
I have been a bit busy but im slowly getting through different routes so far and they are pretty great. This is officially Def Jam 3 for me. Its sad that only 3 games exist in that series now including Street Jam…and no other games…at all.
Edit: Oh also I instantly pictured the narrator as Blaze when I first played so im glad thats actually who you were going for.
Uh I didn’t really get the game. I had thought the tone would be a more serious take on urban struggles.
I played the demo and I couldn’t get into it. It’s not a bad game at all, just couldn’t keep my interest in the dialogue and didn’t feel like my MC’s choices mattered too much. I know this game was supposed to be written this way and not to be taken as a serious fighting game but it made me cringe a couple times and moments where it was supposed to be funny I didn’t really get. Must be getting too old, haha.
But, that’s just my own opinion. Congrats on the release and I’m glad to see a lot of people enjoyed it.
After playing through the game twice, I feel like it could have benefited with more time in the oven.
At the beginning of the game, I chose the military background as an orphan who never knew my parents. Later in the game, I received a phone call from a person claiming to know all about me. One of the available options was that my parents enrolled me in military academy.
I chose this option expecting my character to call the person out on their bs what with being an orphan who never knew my parents and all, only to read how I realized that the caller really did know me.
The heaven sequence was jarring and came out of left field since it was a genre shift that wasn’t foreshadowed in the slightest.
EDIT: One last thing I forgot to mention were the stats. I think it would have been better had either “Endurance” or “Stamina” been renamed or even combined into a single stat. It’s really easy to get the two mixed up and find yourself in a fail condition because you didn’t know which was the “Endurance” option and which was the “Stamina” one.
I think MC probably had some sugar parents…lol
I actually love the writing, the humor of it all. I literally laughed out loud with the A Series of Unfortunate Events reference because I read a few of the books a week ago. At first I was a bit unsure if I would like the writing, but it ended up good
@tommyboy102911 I think it’s for Sascha, who is able to be romanced by any gender making me think you mean male gay options? The sensitivity reader said her kissing the protagonist and then it getting more intense and the option to make out comes and if you try to slip your tongue into her mouth, she’ll win the tongue war and slip you the tongue instead. It’s standard stuff when two people are making out and they both try give each other the tongue at once but only one can prevail!
More homosexual options eh? There’s potentially three different men for you to romance as a man yourself, next time I’ll try to pump that number up.
@Elseguard oh hey dude I ain’t seen you for a while. Glad you got the Def Jam third game you always wanted since there were never more Def Jam games after FFNY and it seems we beat the studio to the third game! I was a bit nervous about that but we ain’t got much news after that Twitter post, I’m sure it’ll come eventually though.
And you recognized Blaze immediately! Method Man would be proud! Ha but I’m glad a true Def Jammer at heart like you got what the narrator is supposed to be. I hope you love the rest of the routes as much as you love the routes you’ve already completed! Well, not hope, I know you will.
@ghost3337 refer to my last post about the description.
@quarianqueen And that’s cool, maybe Become Mortal would be more your style? It sure has a different audience than Street Jam, considering the frequent posters and likes on it. If not, glad you have SJ a look
@Neverwherehere Got it. As you may tell from the original thread that wasn’t the only time the orphan background created a plot hole, but I’d hoped that copyeditor would have found them all which is why I didn’t go over it again myself looking for holes like that. That will be fixed with the next update.
@Kalpana Why I couldn’t agree more! Great explanation.
@whitebear it’s an acquired taste, glad it was to your liking. The game has a pretty high score on the omnibus app too, seems like a lot more people on there liked it than more casual playas. You’re probably a hardcore gamer then!
Actually there is a third game called Def Jam icon
I do enjoy Become Mortal. Thanks for taking the time to reply and offer a different wip, I appreciate it.
@Gabriel_Arcanjo_Aman Me and @Elseguard were being sarcastic.
@quarianqueen No problem Queen, although I’m not going to update Become Mortal for a while so that may have been a bad move… sorry!
Oh, that’s too bad…Become Mortal’s one of my fave WIP and I was looking forward to more.
I like the idea of the book but the stat checks are too high for me, I don’t like replaying a book trial-and-error so many times trying to see everything.
Did you hire your own copyeditor? Because the HG copyeditor doesn’t edit every game for plot holes: that would be nigh on impossible and is why beta testing is required. HG only vets games for grossly offensive, unpublishable content–Hosted Games are written without editorial support from Choice of Games. Just in case there’s any confusion about the writing and publishing process from anyone reading this in the future.
