SLAM DUNK: Sports Simulation/Slice of life rpg [WIP]

I took two shots total the whole game and both were slam dunks since I wanted to be a defensive minded center that would rely on garbage points on offense.

A shooting drill (two point shot, three point shot), rebounding drill (Rebounding, Strength), Cone drills (Speed, Endurance?), Driving the lane drills (Slam dunking, one on one, and/or aggression). Now that I am listing drills, it seems like the process could be more confusing and lame. I just want more control over what my player excels at. For example, if I want a center that can hit the three point shot on a regular basis, I want to know exactly what I need to do (in character creation) to get my player to that point.

The defensive comments you made are very true. The fact you are only playing to 11 can make your defensive stats almost completely useless in some games if the team makes some quick buckets, I suppose it can’t really be helped unless the games were extended. The game I lost 11-1 only had 5 possessions for both teams (my team had 3 turnovers, might I add).

@lackofmops The multiple choice at once IS a Choicescript option…

http://choicescriptdev.wikia.com/wiki/Choice (brilliant work @vendetta @AlexCosarca BTW) will take you through it - about half way down…

Some things to remember - you can make use it as a *fake_choice if you’re getting someone to select stats or the choice doesn’t really branch the story - saves on using lots of different *goto and *labels…

Also the one pain about it is that the titles for each choice can only be one word (which stylistically can be tricky) but apart from that… YES it IS a very cool option and useful for lots and lots of fun things!)

Really enjoyed this game, hoping you’re still tinkering with it! Although I have to say the random aspect was, though at times frustrating, enjoyable! Although I’m wondering if utilizing a certain action (ball motion > iso play) is favoured by the “system” more. I created a guard w/ a more offensive +athletic play style…had him lose the dribble or fail to get to the basket a number of times.

Will be posting my stats up in a bit as I try another play through with another guard and then a forward.

My final thoughts are mixed. Though I did have fun playing this game, it seems to me that your player is strictly geared towards their strengths and CRIPPLED by their weaknesses. That is to say, my player was the only one to score in the final two games yet his interview w/ the reporter marked him as a less-than-desirable acquisition.

This being said, perhaps my own personal bias and decision to stack skills as opposed to distributing them led to these scores. Regardless, I did have fun playing and I hope you continue w/ this, perhaps improving the play of your teammates and balancing the abilities of the opposite team.

@Bugoycmike
John Fuller is just a bit of fun - don’t pay too much attention to what he says! I tried to make him react more to your responses rather than just your play… maybe I didn’t get the wording as right as I could have done

@TheFallen, @Xt1000305, @Bugoycmike and @everyonelesswhofoundittootough!
I’m sorry you found it frustrating… When putting the model together I had to try and guess what the “best” values would be for each position in each situation… and give bonus/penalties depending on what people *generally* think the best option would be at that specific point of time in the play. It’s tough to do… and get it right first time (or second time or the hundredth time!)

I didn’t want to make it to easy (then there’s no satisfaction in actually winning) and I didn’t want to remove the randomness either. Otherwise you just learn the pattern of clicks and then you win *yay* (*yawn* and also - life/sport isn’t like that) AND I need to leave room for MC growth… the complete game has 4 years (and 3 preseasons) of potential character improvement. If you’re too good now - how do you can make a significant improvement over the course of a whole college career?

Plus (if you’ve followed some of the thread above) the actual simulation needs to be re-written for the college games proper… and the initial MC creation stats will need to be re-worked slightly… I’ve got a better way of layering the stats in my head… (so much to do so little time). When I update, the trials will get a refresh too - maybe I’ll have to drop the difficulty level a touch…

But in terms of storyline - how easy is it just to turn up with random people and play amazing basketball - especially when everyone wants to be the one that the coaches look at… (have you ever played in a team when *that guy* doesn’t want to pass the ball?!)

And I also wanted to have MC’s slip under the radar somewhat… you’ll all have a chance to be the hero by the end of the game… wouldn’t it feel sweeter if you came from being a zero first rather than from being a (slightly less than) hero?

I mean its only a basketball game after all - I can’t burn the village / imprison the family / banish the MC to a far flung continent so he can have an epic journey of revenge!

@nine I’ve come to the conclusion that I will have to go through at least one more time so i can post my stats I like this game and i don’t want to be the guy who complained about a certain aspect of the game and then never tried to see if it was a legitimate problem that needed fixing or whether I’m just whining

@Bugoycmike did Greg Oden have to sit out at all due to injuries?

With a beefed up player iso ball worked just fine. I haven’t tried doing iso ball without beefed up stats though. I may have to try that out and see if I can’t have success. Aside from that, there’s not that much iso ball at the college level. I will try and squeeze in a game tomorrow and see how I do.

@GameOver Like Oden’s return to NBA, this is a little late. Least I didn’t join the biggest bandwagon team in the league! Wait…

Jokes aside, how goes the progress on the game @nine?

@Bugoycmike

Rule 1 of SLAM DUNK… Never talk about SLAM DUNK… Oh - sorry yeah jokes aside we-ell…

SD had hit a little snafuu in the sense that I didn’t know how to produce a “stats list”… which makes it impossible to produce a league table (kinda important in a sports game I know!)

Thanks to @CJW’s cool help that’s been fixed and being used successfully enough in another game… which has the most traction at the moment.

The other main issue at the moment is that the actual game simulation model is a little flawed - as you can tell if you play it enough with lots of different positions… And (at the moment) I don’t have the heart to re-write 7000+ lines of code (and it IS mainly code as opposed to text) on my own…

Now - if I had some collaborators then we could look to improve/tweak/re-write/re-develop/publish/earn gazillions… but at the moment another project is easier to do on my own/with the help of @Davo *cough* :smiley:

In short - it isn’t quite development hell - but there’s not much traction on it at the moment! (sadly one can only do so much on one’s own! :(( )

This game is pretty cool. Any further updates on it?

@YoungSweetJones

Well not exactly… but I am currently looking to take it in a slightly different direction… when there’s a development then there’ll be a post!

Aww… meh, I can wait longer.

Will be lurking with my B-Ball and shooting some jumpers until then.

After the trials your current recruitment rank would be 2 out of a lowest possible 8.

Any particular tips on the gameplay? I’m having a lot of trouble understanding what mechanics correspond to which moves. I’ve lost the first match every time I’ve played.

Quick heads up (and I assuming you know a bit about basketball for this)

The best way to play depends on what type of player you’ve created. Look at the skills that you’ve chosen from the trials and base your game accordingly. If you have created a player who’s better at passing but less good at shooting then maybe pass the ball to your team mates more for example.

With all things being equal… shooting is much easier if you are set (ie: not dribbling) and not having a defender in your face… as well as being easier when closer to the basket. If you are not a 3 point shooter then it will be much harder to score 3 point shots…

The teams play differently as you go… They have different play styles, particularly the second team counter attack quicker and better than the first team (especially if you win game 1) so you may need to change your playstyle accordingly. Also, lose and the teams get easier - win and they get harder. It isn’t easy to win 3 times - if you do consider it an accomplishment!

As well as this - there is a random factor involved - EVEN if YOU (the MC) make the right choices at every stage your team may not score every time… or you won’t stop the opposition scoring every time… or you may take the last shot and miss. This is sports not a CYOA book - you can’t make the same choice and get the same results… you may be much more likely to get the same results yes… but is it 100% guaranteed… nope sorry!

The idea behind this isn’t to win every game necessarily (and remember these were just 3 practice games) and regardless of your background you would still be able to be recruited by any team… its just that I like the idea of the MC responding to all sorts of situations - regardless of winning/losing.

Anyway - hope this helps!

Is development of this game cancelled because I really want to keep playing it

For your information, there’s a really popular Japanese anime called “Slam Dunk”, I’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned this to you, but you may run into copyright problems if you use this name. Just a heads up.
