Salt & Ash (prologue complete, 10k words)

Growing up in a tiny fishing village, you only knew peace. Hectic nights involved the occasional fist fight, brought on by too many drinks at the local tavern, or a bad business deal between the fisherman and the merchant. Problems were always put to rest before they could make a muck of things until that night. When your village comes under attack, and everything you knew is taken from you, will you be ready to embark on a high-seas journey to claim what was once yours or will you find yourself drowning in your destiny?

Across the stormy seas, every choice you make shapes who you are and who you want to become as you join the crew of a ragtag team of pirates and answer the call of the ocean. Befriend and learn about the crew that offered you a safe haven, and possibly find love along the way.

When you finally corner the enemy ship, will you let revenge burn it all down or will you be the one to rebuild the bonds once broken? Steer through political intrigue and magic as you define your legacy and discover exactly how much you’re willing to sacrifice for family.

I’ve been writing this story for a few months, and I am learning to code as I go so I apologize if there are any mistakes or errors.

The start is fine. I particularly enjoyed the visceral descriptions of a costal(?) village and tideweavers. The stats menu looks very organized.

Be aware that the prologue doesn’t have too much interactivity. There are some dialogue-punctuation typos. Such:

“…this is an example..”

Instead: “…example.”

“Example sentence”

Instead: “Example sentence.”

It’s interesting so far! I like the setting and I absolutely adore Gideon already, and I barely met him!

I did notice the punctuation issues mentionned above and some typos and what not here and there, but I don’t have time to list them all atm.
What did bother me a bit more were pronoun issues for the MC. I picked for mine to go by he/him, but it switches between that and they/them (and uses they/them more often than he/him, honestly).

For example:

Your mother attempts to keep the peace, as she is known to do, “Leave him alone. They finished their work, they’re free to do as they please. Just as you are.”

I have also noticed the stats move VERY little with each choice, and I’m wondering if it’s intentional? If it is, that’s fine - I’ve seen games that only give you 1-2% for each choice you make. But since it’s not common, I prefer to ask if it was intended. Since I can’t see the code I can’t take a look to know if it seems correct.

Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you found it interesting, and I’m very glad that Gideon has a possible fan already. :heart_suit:

I have plans to sit down this weekend and slowly go through it to fix spelling and punctuation issues I’ve also found. I had been so focused on the coding aspect that I let a bit slip by me which I do apologize for, I need to learn to slow down and make sure everything is fine before moving on.

Truthfully, It’s funny you chose that exact section. I was re-reading the demo to add to my ‘needs fixing’ list and spent an hour lying in bed thinking about that part. I realized how odd it sounded with the pronoun only appearing once (unless choosing they/them) and almost got up to fix it, but left it for the weekend update. Now the beast returns to taunt me the moment I check this page, lol.

As for the stats, it wasn’t entirely intentional but I do plan on working with the stat points as I go and figuring out what works best for the reader. I also plan on introducing duo stats that can fall under different categories in chapter 1 along with more options per dialogue choice as well. Do you recommend upping the stats for the prologue? I can easily do that if it does throw you off when you check your stats.

No worries! It’s the first wip so some roughness is to be expected!
As for your question, well that really depends on your intent for these! I don’t mind stats that increase very slowly as long as the game is correctly “scaled” around it. Like for example if at some point you make an early game personality check that requires the player to have 55% on one side for the flavor text to appear instead of just checking which side of the opposed bar is higher than the other, then player may not have reached said 55% yet since the increases happen by only one or two percents. And if you need 20% in a relationship stat with a character, then if increases happen by 1 or 2% at a time, it may be a late game check while in other games it’s not rare to START at 20 or more! But as long as you tailor the checks around it, it doesn’t really matter to me - it’s more about the ease of coding for you!

Haven’t read yet, but will over the weekend. but if you could make the code viewable we could help you finding the coding hiccups easier.

I actually made the code viewable about 5 minutes ago after I read the comment from Konoi and thought about that part of their comment some more. I hadn’t realized I had hidden it. She’s messy, but she’s public!

That shouldn’t be an issue. I do think I’ll up the stats so it feels like you’re getting closer to creating the MC that you want at a quicker rate, but I only plan to do light flavor text for the personality choices for the first chunk. Any actual checkpoints will be introduced later in the story. I have started a list in my story journal to keep track of possible points one can have by the end of the sections because admittingly that was one of my worries when I started.

Thank you for your feedback! I really appreciate it. I also made the coding public if that is something you wanted to look into, I didn’t realize I had it hidden when I uploaded the story.
