Sailing Game (WIP) - Version 3.4 ~145K Words

Public Demo: CoGDemos

This is a sailing game that I have been working on intermittently for over a year. It is not really a book, but more like a text-based video game. I made the game for my own enjoyment, but it has grown to the point where it likely has appeal to a wider audience. I have decided to post the WIP here and see what the community thinks of it. I have been considering the possibility of moving toward publishing the game through Hosted Games, but I am such a perfectionist that I am not totally comfortable with that.

The game consists of sailing a British Royal Navy vessel circa 1800. It uses real points of sail and attempts to simulate the experience of traveling by sea in that era.

I think you had mentioned this in the author Discord before, but either way I love this concept. And while it’s not a mass appeal one, there has to be a market for the Masters and Commanders out there. Aubrey Maturin novels still sell after all.

I think Horatio Hornblower would approve.

Just don’t ask the reader to define a rhumb line.

Welcome back. I’ll take a look when I have a moment.

Some thoughts:

Relaxed difficulty option should be placed on top. Difficulty levels should be shown in ascending order.

The game is quite repetitive at the moment. I was pretty much just spamming the sail southwest button throughout, except to pump water or rest when the game started to nag about those stats needing attention.

You might want to add some story elements. Write a storyline behind the sailing, have random banter with the crew, find out more about them and so on.

Good luck.

Thanks for giving it a try. It definitely can get repetitive until something terrible happens haha. I think your advice is all good. I thought about adding story elements before publish, but it waits on my interest in doing that. Maybe soon.
