"Relics of the Lost Age" Post-Release Discussion Thread

I forgot since it’s been awhile when I tried that route when it was beta, but if you didn’t use the power to get rid of the nazi from the island, the british wont take the stone, but I might be mistaken.

I brought Stevo persistently until we got captured by Tibetan Restorationists . I decided to leave him there because I thought “Hey they’re already taking good care of him and I don’t think they’ll hurt an injured person. And the road ahead is going to be pretty bad, I think. Better leave him in a safe place like this for recovery.” Then for the rest of the game, I was told Stevo is dead :no_mouth:, making me regret for leaving him behind.

The Tibetan Restorationits were living in the caves of Himalayas.
And
A man who was attacked by a Bear and has hypothermia needs speciazed medical attention.
And there were no hospitals in Himalayas at that time.
So his death was not that surprising.
Also
It’s obvious that they will kill him because our MC and Zhu just escaped from their prison,so they probably killed him in retaliation.

There is an option of drowning the whole island to the bottom of the sea.

I did the exact same thing, thinking it’d be better to leave him warm and cozy — when the narrative started mentioning he died, I just went “Oh… On a second thought, they probably just finished him in retaliation after Zhu and Spillane escaped.

Next time when a Chinese comes through, they will feed him Finished Stevo porridge

Loving the game so far (sorry I’m such a terrible academic adviser, Sam! I hope all this Nazi-fighting will look good on the ol’ resume.) But I got stuck in Louisiana where I’m fighting O’Shea during the swamp chase and I can’t pass any of the checks even when I have high stats. Is there a way to actually win this encounter or was I supposed to make different choices to avoid it entirely?

Just shoot him or you can also feed him to alligator if you have high athleticism (>7). I don’t remember correctly but fisticuffs 8 also gets you through.

@anon42713113 Yeah, it is also possible to end the game with the island destroyed. If you get the British ending, you’ll just have to tell yourself that hey, at least it’s better than the Nazis getting it!

@get_hect Ways to avoid getting beat down by O’Shea: 1) With Gunplay of 6 or higher, just shoot him at the start of the fight! 2) With Reactions of 6 or higher, try to dodge him. You can’t talk him round, but I think failing a talk test does less damage to you than failing the other tests (-1 health rather than -2).

What stats would i need to play as The Man himself Indiana Jones? Im trying to imitate the movies.:sunglasses:

I think traveller specialist and high athletism and fistfight?

In addition to @lynossa’s recommendations of high Athleticism + Fisticuffs, I would also probably have Reactions as a high stat! Decently high Charm too.

iirc, Indy would probably favor Suspicious, Skeptical, and Adventurous.
Not super sure about Professional/Flippant or Selfish/Altruistic, but I’m sure other Indy fans on here have better insights!

Highly professional in a university setting, but flippant out in the field. As far as selfish/altruistic… he managed to resist taking the freaking Holy Grail for himself, and the plot of the second movie centered around him returning an artifact to a village.

Looking at all of the stats, I’d say:
Charm- medium
Gunplay- high
Fisticuffs- high
Athleticism- medium
Reactions- low/medium
Subterfuge- medium/high

Enough on the “Aryans” discussion. I will suspend anyone that ignores this warning.

Edit: Discussion of the game’s bad guys is allowed, but this narrow scope will be strictly enforced.

How to build an Indy (in my view):

High Fisticuffs and Athleticism. Medium Charm and Gunplay. For the specialism, either Traveler or Survivalist could be argued for. Personality stats are tricky because he actually evolves over the trilogy. Early Indy, for example, (in Temple of Doom, which people forget was a prequel and is the earliest of the trilogy chronologically), he’s very selfish, always talking about fortune and glory, but he gets less selfish as the films progress. He was always Suspicious and Adventurous, and mostly skeptical, although again he gets less skeptical over the course of each film. And I don’t think he was ever very Professional, even in a university setting. Remember that scene in Last Crusade when he climbs out of his office window and runs away rather than facing all those students whose papers he hadn’t graded?!

My first forum post but I just have to talk about this game.

I honestly think Relics of the Lost Age is one my favorite hosted games/choice of games I’ve played. The writing is great and the characters are well-written and have unique, fleshed out personalities. I liked all of the ROs and the dialogue was fantastic. I actually laughed out loud at times. It genuinely felt like I was playing an action adventure video game. Big Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider/Uncharted vibes (Also love the ace attorney reference).

In terms of gameplay, the stats/skill checks felt fair. I like how there are multiple options for which skill you want to rely on, and I like how if you failed you wouldn’t suffer too much.

I haven’t beaten the game yet (I’m on the last section, but this game is so good I don’t want it to end) but it seemed to me that your standing (fortune, glory, reputation, political impact) doesn’t really have as much of an effect as I thought it would. I would also say that sometimes there would be so much text on one page that I kinda started skimming it.

I don’t know much about coding or how plausible this would be, and I know choice of games doesn’t believe in having a save system, but it would be awesome if there was a way to replay individual chapters. This game is huge (which is a positive, in my opinion), but that makes replaying it to see different options/paths kind of daunting.

I’m wondering if you have plans to have this be a series? Or just a duology, as I saw you were making a sequel. Either way, thanks for making such a kick-ass game. Seriously, this is the most fun I’ve had playing a COG/HG recently.

Thank you for the very kind write-up, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it!

The plan right now is to make this a trilogy, like the original Indiana Jones movies. I have a concept for a third book which will pick up on key story elements from both of the first two, end at a satisfying point, and take the action down into the Second World War, which I think could be exciting, so that’s the goal right now. You’re right about the Standing stats, they don’t have a huge impact in Relics, but I kind of designed them to be cumulative: if I do it right, they’ll have a bigger and bigger impact the further on in the series you get.

I’ve had someone else requesting chapter saves too. It’s something I’ll be looking at seriously in the not too distant future. I’m currently on a roll with the next chapter of the sequel, so I want to get that finished first, and then I’ll pause development on that, look back at Relics and see if chapter saves are feasible. So watch this space!

(Edit: also, welcome to the Forum! We’re very friendly here!)

I love this game, played it when it was a wip but purposely stopped before the last few chapters released because I didnt want to spoil myself. I have one question, how do I romance Zhu? I tried once in the demo to kiss him and he rejected my Spillane

It depends on when. If you’re trying to romance him in Chapter 2, then a) it’s very hard to do, because it’s very easy for him to hate you in that chapter, and in fact the most you can get out of it at that time is a kiss; and b) even though he dies at the end of Chapter 2, don’t give up hope. You might find that your prospects improve later on in the game!

I found out that it was very easy for him to hate Spillane very easy in chapter 2 , any tips for him not to hate you and accept his kiss? My Spillane doesnt have a high charm stat, is that part of it?
