Sorry Mara, but that’s not really an acceptable solution for me. I have had a decent education in English and I could usually catch my most egregious errors when seeing my posts in the thread and it is a serious annoyance I won’t be able to do that any longer now.

It looks like it, since I’m no longer able to do this… and I’d like to agree with the other people who also find the details to be useful. A lot of times, people add on to a post and if I’ve already read it, I don’t want to have to skim it to find what it was. (Or if they’ve just changed a typo, that saves time figuring out what it was.)

My English teachers both at high school and university would be so pleased. And aghast at letting an increasing amount of US English “barbarisms” slip into my spelling and grammar over the years too, no doubt. Or starting a sentence with “And” for example.

Yep, and this is the most annoying bit, since this happens to me practically constantly, for some reason I’m much better at checking my own posts once I actually see them in the thread.

Not really, the number of maximum edits that would be generally satisfactory without the grace period would differ starkly between users from @ParrotWatcher who seems to hardly need any, to people like me and Mara who may need a lot. Really that five minute grace period was bliss for me, I can’t imagine what sort of troubles would have weighed against revoking it, particularly since this seems to be a move which might make a forum dedicated to essentially celebrating creative writing much less legible.

Okay, making say two quick spelling edits and one minor addition in five minutes, something that happens to me with some regularity now takes three precious edits, where previously it took only one or none. This has caused me today, for the first time I recall to run out of allowed edits.

The reason is reached maximum number of allowed daily edits. So I could now let the quality of my posts degrade by not editing them for spelling or grammar after the fact anymore or indeed treating it like work and typing out everything in my office software, but like I said that sucks the fun right out of anything and makes it into a chore.

Okay, I bumped up the daily edits to 200. Does that fix the problem? (And if not, why? I mean, I can push it up to something ridiculous like 1000 if it’s really a problem.)

I’m actually kinda glad that that those details are hidden now? I remember thinking a couple of times that it was a bit faulty that, for example, someone could delete their post for X or Y reason and any regular user could just click the li’l orange pencil and dig up what the original poster had wanted to get rid of. I can also understand that some people might feel that their privacy’s being breached when anyone could see that they caught a typo 10 minutes later and wanted to fix that.

The only exception to the rule that I could think of would be that the first post of all threads should allow you see the details of what changed. I know I used to do this all the time for the Upcoming Hosted Games/Choice of Games Releases threads – it used to let me easily see what got added to the list or was postponed/otherwise delayed without having to wrack my memory.

I think I recalled being a basic user and is able to “peek” to a “deleted” post’s content.
That feeling when you’re able to do that

For the record, a lot of US English features are older anyway, if you really wanted to be a purist about it. (Like saying “fall” for autumn dates to the 17th century.) But regardless, it’s stuff like starting sentences with “and” that would make you sound more native.

Happens to me too. I think seeing it in a new context provides just enough context that your brain stops glossing over stuff that it previously ignored

Would it be possible to hide details for deleted posts, but not regularly edited posts? Or are those governed by the same settings?

In the case of seeing after 10 minutes that someone’s fixed a typo… without details, people would be likely to wonder whether something significant was added, and have to search through it. With details, you can easily see “okay, no big deal.”

And, well, often I like to edit posts to add something on without double posting, and I see others do this often, and I click on the pencil all the time so that I know what material is new.

Actually, I do end up using a few, either for typos, or just things I forgot to say before I hit “Reply”…

But, yeah, @RETowers, could we have the details back? I can understand @Lithophene’s concerns, but I feel having them is more useful (e.g. for preventing double posting) than not.

Haah! Finally I can pry those deleted messages again!

FYI, the color pencil determines the “recentness” of your latest edit. And also the kind of post you’re editing.
Orange for 5 minutes and so, which goes brown, and gray at… 15 days?

And green for wikis.

Posting here since I know we were having a chat a while back about the edit functionality, but did something change again? It used to take about 5 minutes before Discourse would start tracking separate edits. If I tidied up a bunch o’ stuff within that time, it’d all be bundled up under one edit. Now I’m getting a tally each time I notice I missed something. Like this. Or this. Or even this.

The grace period has been abolished but the allowed number of edits has been upped. Now the forum shall truly know and track every bad and careless writing habit we display.
