New Hosted Game! "The Courting of Miss Bennet" by Michael Gray

A story has a target audience. Imagine that.

Itā€™s a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, it even says so in the description. Is there anyone who doesnā€™t know what to expect going into that (and just avoid it without leaving 1* reviews if itā€™s not going to be to their taste? No one is forcing anyone to play it.) It obviously has a very specific target audience. The only thing I would have added to the description bullet points was ā€œPlay as Miss Bennetā€ to make it absolutely crystal clear itā€™s female locked. Yes the entire world could have been full on gender flipped but look at the complaint COR gets for that. @Yash If you want a male version, why not write one from the POV of Mr Darcy or something? Or encourage the writer to make one if they feel like it (they may not want to) instead of just saying youā€™ll never read their stuff again.

I really enjoyed this game. Itā€™s well written and absorping and the characters are interesting.

What annoyed me though was when i accepted Collinā€™s proposal the game shifted to charlotteā€™s pov, i wouldā€™ve liked to continue the game while married to see how differently the MC would deal with the events that happens later on.

But all in all itā€™s a great game. Congrats to the author and best of wishes for future projects.

Yeah, it was an interesting choice to switch protagonists. I didnā€™t play much further because it didnā€™t make sense to me how Charlotte would end up with Darcy or why she would be invested in Lydiaā€™s dumb ass. But it was definitely interesting. Maybe Iā€™ll play again and have Charlotte be the one who runs off with Wickham just so I can have Pride and Prejudice: The Darkest Timeline.

I sent this game to a friend, who is Jane Austen obsessed. She absolutely lost it when she found out, and wonā€™t stop talking about this game. Lol.

I liked it as well, as someone who doesnā€™t really like Austen much. It felt really familiar and comfy, but I think it could have been a bit more adventurous in order to give more choice to player.

Iā€™m really liking games like this and Study in Steampunk that are based on public domain stories. I think thereā€™s so much potential with these kinds of games and would love to see more.

Minority view here: I havenā€™t finished the book but the first few chapters actually kinda bored me. Sorry!
I shall explain my reasons -

Yeah. It felt like I was reading the Pride and Prejudice novel instead of playing it as a game, especially in the earlier chapters.
Many choices seem not to matter as itā€™s mostly whether you choose to agree or disagree with what was written.
Also it would have been nice if there were more than 2 choices (or at most 3 choices), which was the case most of the time.
Or perhaps some stats would have also made the choices more meaningfulā€¦ stats like snarky vs. genuine, which then affects the characters responses in the story.

More character customisation would have been good. I understand the need to keep Lizzyā€™s character canonical, but it would have been much more interesting if you could customise the MCā€™s personality, looks, etc.

The book seem very linear (until the choices to choose your RO). Again, I understand the need to keep the story true to the book, but more branching in the storyline would make it way more interestingā€¦ branching like staying for the dance where you continue mingling with say Mr Bingley vs. going for a walk in the gardens where you bump into say Mr Darcy.

Again, I apologise for my unpopular view and negative review. (If itā€™s too offensive, I will delete my post.)

I started this last night and just finished my first playthrough on my lunch break in work.

Went with Colonel Fitzwilliam on my first playthrough because I have a bit of a soft spot for him.

I had really high hopes for this because love Austen novels so much, but I couldnt help but be disappointed. I think the game has a LOT of potential but it was just poorly executed. I didnā€™t think the writing was incredible, but that could be more my fault for expecting something that would fit in more with the Regency period (eg referring to Wickham and Bingly using their first names from the get-go. Thatā€™s reserved for engaged/married couples and relatives etc)

Anyway. I was more disappointed with choices being seemingly pointless unless it was deciding which man to spend more time with.

Also disappointing was the lack of female romance options! Charlotte abd Lizzy could totally have lived as old maids in genteel poverty together. There is even the opportunity for a romance with Anne de Bourgh. Where are my regency lesbians!

I reckon Iā€™ll play every route and elaborate on my views later, I just had higher hopes for a game along the lines of Regency Love or The Ladyā€™s Choice

aw thatā€™s really too bad :frowning: cuz i was looking forward to actually buying the game on steam so i could play all 5 ROs and also support the author

Do you think someone who has no idea what Pride and Prejudice is can still enjoy the game?

Probably, if you like romcoms. At least, youā€™ll have an idea of what P&P is after playing. Itā€™s basically the bookā€™s plot plus ā€œWhat if Elizabeth ended up with a different guy?ā€

You canā€™t really go too far off path. Elizabeth isnā€™t going to end up Queen of England or anything. Well, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth did end up as agents for Scotland Yard in one ending, thatā€™s about it as far as I found.

That said, I did enjoy it. But Iā€™m familiar with Pride and Prejudice and got my satisfaction from spiting Mr. Darcy  .

I enjoyed it and I know nothing about this. Nor will I really read the original. But when Iā€™m in the mood for only romance then Iā€™ll go to this one.

Took words right outta my mouth, fam. Why canā€™t I be just single? Why canā€™t I just shack up with my best friend. Why canā€™t I elope with an heiress (oh the drama)?!

I played Colonel Fitzwilliam and Darcyā€™s routes. Like some people I couldnā€™t help but feel disappointed too.

Fitzwilliam feels like a copy of Darcyā€™s route when you reach that part with Darcy. I was hoping we would see more development between Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam.

Also like some people mentioned about the modern slang. I remember when this was in the work in progress sub forum someone had mentioned it but I guess the author decided not to change those small things or forgot about it.

If you want a nice regency romance I would recommend Regency Love and A Ladyā€™s Choice over this oneā€¦

Havenā€™t actually played the game yet, but thought Iā€™d leave this little gem here for your amusement. Basically, I was scrolling through the reviews to get a feel of what the game was like and stumbled across the single most beautiful review of all time.

Essentially, the reviewer complained that the game was unoriginal, because it was just a rip-off of Pride and Prejudice and Zombiesā€¦ But without the zombiesā€¦ I cried.

They were either being sarcastic or someoneā€™s school needs to up their English lit awareness course desperately  (In saying that, this game would probably benefit from a zombie DLC to widen its reader base lol.)

I would have pmā€™d this, but canā€™t see how I can, so if the author follows the forum anonymously:

Having read the recent toxic feedback thread, and realising that I posted above in a hurtful way, I wanted to apologise to the author if you read this thread. Iā€™m very sorry if it caused you upset. Your story was very enjoyable, and that was part of the motivation behind my stupid emotional reaction. I really do look forward to enjoying your lovely work (more thoughtfully next time), in the future.

Itā€™s great! I love it! It is indeed one of my fav. gender lock game now. Though, at first I was really hesitant to play it but I still did! Hah! Annddd I just have to say how much I love the LIā€™s so much theyā€™re all adorable in their own way! I mean just take a lookie at George!(damn heā€™s so adorable that I would wish to never see him ever again!) And oh how can I ever forget Mr. Collinsā€“(Iā€™d rather not talk about him HA HA) And Colonel Fitzwilliam (He is, indeed, a charmer! And is very good to be with) and donā€™t get me started with Charles (heā€™s a great guy! And he truly loves Janeā€“or my Lizzy <3 the only thing I hate about him is his sisterā€“HE HE) and OF COURSE! I would never not mention my ultimate fav. Mr. Darcy( my gosh! he is the perfect match!)

Well wrapping this all up, the game is definitely great! I just wish I have learned about it earlier. But thereā€™s no regrets! I still love it! And Iā€™m sure I will still do no whenever the time is. Iā€™ll be sure to play this again coz I canā€™t get enough of the Pride and Prejudice setting!

Is it available on Steam? I canā€™t find it.

Not all Hosted Games are on Steam. I believe this is one that is not. So it is only available on Google Play, iOS, and the Choice of Games website. And Amazonā€™s little App Store, for whatever that is worth (not much).
