New Hosted Game! Samurai of Hyuga Book 4 by Devon Connell

Hmm, this is a pretty sensitive topic, and also spoilery, so I’ll put my thoughts under spoiler tags. I had female MC and male Jun, and yeah he is sexist for sure…and vulgar, uncivilized, aggressive, and a lot of other things…though I think he does appear to respect her as an equal (or even superior) when it comes to the sword, and I don’t think he actually desires a sex slave. Here’s why:

Perhaps the biggest tip off is that Jun shows a lot revulsion when he is confronted with actual sex slavery at the masquerade party. So either, he doesn’t care much for it in reality, it isn’t who he wants to be, or he is remembering his own past and part of him wants to change.

During the sex scene before Jun talks about his past, MC says something like “I know we like our role play, but I can’t help but feel like I’m hurting you.” So I’m not so sure Jun is as comfortable with it all as it seems.

At one point early on you can pick a dialogue option, “what does it matter what I think, I’m just a dog…” and he responds “you won’t be a dog forever”. Implying he sees the situation as beneath the MC…he’s just waiting for her to find her self respect (which she clearly lost after the events of book 3). In the meantime, he’s willing to do or be whatever he needs to be to make that happen…even become a demon.

When the MC finally does remember the Jigoku and gets her self respect back, Jun gives her jacket back immediately, and also starts showing his own fears and vulnerabilities more openly…

If you go through with the romance, there is a role reversal happening…where the MC is starting to view the idea of attachments and fate as something less terrible for a change…and Jun is learning that sometimes you have to embrace change, and let go of the things you love to save them. His final act is to literally cut off his own arm and set her free so that she can live, and not be dragged back down into hell.

I thought it was clever, the analogy of the red string of fate as a leash… and it was cleverly written, because every time the string would tighten, I’d get an uneasy feeling and think to myself “that dick!” until eventually I realized the string was just getting tighter and shorter because they were thinking about one another. It was interesting how the string transforms and literally goes from iron chains, to a life line, to something they used to fight with the Jigoku together in battle…in a completely new way Sensei never taught them to do. In fact, Sensei warned them against working together, back in chapter 1, if you told him you and Jun got the apple together.

Thanks for that. I saw a number of things in a similar way but you also pointed out some things I didn’t see at all.

The haori jacket return within the given situation for example.

Can’t express how much I enjoy seeing different interpretations from various people, no matter if I agree or not. It always provides new perspectives.

So thank you, to everyone who provides polite feedback. It’s why I keep coming back.

Yeah, I mainly saw it in that way, because of how the Ronin viewed it as a symbol of “everything they had become”. It’s very important to the Ronin. But the Ronin also sees it as a symbol of how they let everyone down in the worst way possible, and doesn’t feel they deserve the trust the students had in him/her…so Jun/ko takes it away. When it’s given back, the Ronin is no longer wallowing in guilt, wants to fight for others again, and no longer wants to give up. So Jun/ko gives it back and seems to finally accept the Ronin for who they are now.

In a later scene after that…

Female Ronin thinks to herself how she isn’t afraid of Jun anymore and feels like the woman she is supposed to be again.

But perhaps the biggest reason I don’t see Jun that way is because… he literally killed his entire estranged family, including his mother, to prevent the orphan Aimi-chan from becoming a sex slave. He clearly has come to have strong feelings about this, if he didn’t before.

Indeed. the Situation you mentioned last in regards to Ami-chan was a total turning point for me. Not long before that, he was going on about how the weak don’t deserve to live and yet, he saved her.

What also really got me, was the situation after the ‘party’. The Ronin does not feel the thread anymore, and that was only possible, if one did not desire it to be anymore. It showed, that Jun was willing (within the confinements of the spell) to let go of the Ronin, only to kill his family and save a little girl. I think that’s when he truly started to accept the change and see things in a different light - see an alternative to what he had so far. Also the fact that he did not kill Juni, which he easily could have.

I think Jun/Junko is an extremely complicated character to understand clearly, completely not a yandere character type that some people will think of. They suffered from childhood misfortune, using Jigoku, psychological instability to be able to behave like normal people, surely, I thought, all of that insanity they acted could not have happened just by itself, that’s the consequences of someone who seemed to have all happiness in their own way but after all, lost everything once that belongs to them. Moreover, each character has bad and good sides exist simultaneously because no one is perfect, two sides are fighting each other to finally create the character’s existence and that is what I expect in the next two books.

This. Thank you. There is no denying that some of the things Jun (I haven’t read Junko) does it shitty. But I am all about change. And when romancing Jun, he does change a lot. And I get some people be turned off by trying to love and help your “abuser”, as they see it, become a better person. But these points are exactly how I feel about this book.

It was all about the changes we’ve made, forgiving ourselves and accepting our past. And that had a lot to do with Jun(ko), even if you don’t like them.

Also, did someone wanna make a discussion/debate thread for book 4, since like technically this really isn’t the place?

Thanks! @resuri08

And also sorry for posting in the wrong thread, I had no idea there was another discussion thread already going on elsewhere.

No worries. It’s alright! There’s no hard rule about it. You could discuss here or over the other thread. XD

Btw, moving off from the content of Book 4, where would you report technical errors? Sorry I’m a newbie. I caught a number of kanji/kana that aren’t quite right. (e.g. the only one I remember off the top of my head is General Shatao in Book 3 (I think) being translated as “generally Shatao” in Japanese rather than General as a military rank)

Lmao. Google Translate at its best.

Oh, I think normally you would send that to support @ choiceofgames but with a HG I’m actually not so sure…

Really enjoyed this book although I never know what any of the Japanese words mean so feel like an uneducated ronin myself :joy:although I can do 1 to 6 thanks to my blood lust

I’m kinda glad there wasn’t much other RO choices/interactions ( at least not in my playthrough) as would have been an even harder decision to make then Ashley v Miranda :see_no_evil:

But guess that’s a decision for the next book :grimacing:

You have such a great understanding of his character and you reminded me why I love Jun so much.

Especially the moment he kills his clan and mother and saves the little girl, best character development, I was crying like a baby - and then letting MC go and cutting his arm to save her

Haters in this forums tend to “forget” about it considering also what they edited in the SOH tv tropes page, specifically Jun’s one; you madam/sir nailed everything :sob:
