damm i did like her more before you said that… xD
¿so if we romance her, we have to be carefull what we said about his brother?
I feel like that should just be a life rule in general. When dating, do not insult members of your significant other’s family.
He’s her twin for god’s sake! Why would you expect to be able to badmouth him and be on her good side?
This sounds like a bug. Either Hunter or Artemis is quick to get aggressive, but you should have an opportunity to say SOMETHING before they jump you. Thanks for pointing it out, everyone, I’ll check it out.
I think it’s fair to say that they already saw you as a threat. By giving that speech, you confirmed their impressions and taught them a bit more about your species (which could come back to haunt you later.)
Yep. As of now, most of them are monster LIs opening up to you (e.g. if you are dating or becoming a close friend of Wendy’s, she’ll talk more about how hard it is to not eat everyone in sight.) Unless you’re interacting in a friendly kind of way with one of the twins, in which case they’ll become curious and start asking you about your species. I’ll see about working on some more chances for you to talk to other characters about your life.
Oh I have a question- How many monsters other than the Wendigo have known geographic origins, or are they global as far back as anyone can remember?
Before the dutch came to Japan, were there vampires et al there, is the reason the Wendigo is caught reading a book about monsters is that all the other monsters in high school were things that weren't native several centuries ago?
maybe in games is like that, but in real life…not many of us like our mother in law, brother in law…etc
I imagine Kitsune have an origin in …Japan? Don’t actually know enough about them to say what country they come from.
Well, the Japanese gave them that name, and if they’re still using it today, then it’s probably their place of origin.
Good guess! Many of the monsters native to the U.S. are now extinct, or very rare. Wendy was lucky enough to live in a bit of forest that was never logged or developed, and because she hibernated when food was scarce, she was able to stay alive and unnoticed. She was also resourceful enough to adapt to feeding in cities.
I’m not sure what you mean about the Dutch coming to Japan? Monsters do travel, either through conventional means (planes and ships) or through people bringing beliefs to new places (for those who spontaneously appear, rather than being born or converted.) So I imagine there were more types of monsters in any country after they made foreign contact.
All monsters have origins. Most of them are even known. Werewolves trace their ancestry back to ancient Greece (Herodotus wrote about a tribe called the Neurians that could turn into wolves) and then spread throughout Europe and influenced the legends there. Vampires originated around Romania, and like the werewolf spread throughout Europe (though for awhile, werewolves were more popular in Poland and places East of there, vampires were more common in Western Europe.)
Succubi/incubi trace their roots back to Medieval Europe, around the time of the earliest witch trials. They were described in Malleus Maleficarum, the most influential manual of the time about how to hunt witches and demons. There were earlier seductive spirits, though, that may have been proto-cubi.
Goblins are Fae, originating in the Celtic isles. Vickie the Kitsune is indeed Japanese in origin, though I think she might be second or third-generation American. Every country or bit of land that humans have ever set foot in has been home to its own monsters.
This is a very good point, and something else to consider is that most monsters have a reason to hide their monstrosity (for lack of a better word) from humans. So while they may recognize another supernatural creature, it is normally in their best interests to keep things secret (I loved one of the responses you could give Victoria for her painting for this reason)
All monsters have origins. smile Most of them are even known.
and
And what is interesting is cultures which had little to no contact often came up with similar ideas/stories. For example, China had their own version of what people call vampires (though they really are their own thing) called the Chiang Shih.
Vampire sort of creatures I really love to include the Adze (not the hand tool) and the Penangallan.
As for werecreatures, while werewolves were certainly given top billing in Europe, you find variants elsewhere. Africa have legends of lion, leopard, and hyena shapechangers, India had tiger changers, and Mayans/Aztecs had stories of werecoyotes and werejaguars. In one game, I actually had werewolves rather rare, and werecoyotes as the top (since they needed animal blood to strengthen their lineage as well as human…and coyotes were much more common than wolves).
What I meant about the dutch and japan was about cultural isolation.
For example, in vampire the requiem vampires are so old that they're global, no matter what the local legends would have you believe. Which means that before any white man other than an Ainu had ever stepped foot on Japan there were japanese vampires.
But in Underworld as an example, if memory serves vampires and werewolves share an origin in 14th century eastern europe, which means that any japanese vampires or werewolves could be traced historically.
Anyway, my question was answered, this world is more like the latter than the former, with known historical origins.
Hey @Sashira I hope you’ve been well! I’m finally on summer break so I can post whenever again! I love the updates that you’ve implemented! I can’t tell you how much it means to me, and I’m sure others, how in-depth you have gone with the sex and gender identity options!
I enjoyed the explanation you had for the demons a little ways back in the forum (post 1494). I’ve always thought of demons not having sexes the way physical beings do, but rather being able to fluidly shift from one sex to another to meet the needs of their prey.
I was wondering what happened to our option to kiss Hunter when he try to find out why he’s so hostile towards us. I’m really digging him and my Omnibus. Also can humans become demons? I know we have or had a parent option so I’m curious whether our demon parent impregnated a human, and after puberty we inherited all our powers or whether we have two parents. What’s your take on demon reproduction?
And will we have a way of tracking our GPA in the future or can we assume that our academic skill is similar to a grade point average. Meaning a 30 is like a 3.0 B average?
A GPA system is currently being tested. It’s not working correctly just yet, but it’s getting there. Academics translates to more like “study skills”/“interest in school”, there are individual grades for each class.
A few people have mentioned that some non-combat options in sixth period aren’t appearing. I’ll try to fix that soon.
Humans can’t become demons, though other types of demons (not 'cubi) might be able to possess them like vessels. 'Cubi make their own vessels from the energy they harvest.
You have a parent. They will be visiting over Homecoming weekend. To repeat a point from earlier in the thread (try checking the ‘search thread’ box to find answers in this mass of posts) a demon character will not know for sure where they come from. Demons are fond of lying, so they have been told multiple stories about their origin and parentage.
Something I’m curious about…is human flesh especially delicious to a wendigo, or it just something they have to eat which they may or may not like?
I’ve looked into the Hunter/Artemis fight error in sixth period. Everything looks okay and is passing quicktest. If you try to talk to one of the twins in the alley, they should get irritated but give you a chance to leave. If one gets in your face, you should be able to kiss them or make a quick exit, rather than fighting. And any character with low enough Conforming should be able to smoke in the alley and ignore them at first.
If anyone is not seeing these non-fight options, could you please send me a PM with what your last selectable options were, and preferably also a screenshot of what the screen before/during them jumping you looks like? It seems to be one of those tricky bugs, so thanks in advance for the help.
Both? They need to consume human flesh to survive. But it also smells and tastes like food. (Leaving out the question of monster flesh for now, which they could try but might have side effects, etc.) Even though it’s delicious, they might not LIKE eating it. Think of it like, the vast majority of people walking around are made entirely out of hamburgers, and there are a few more exotic dishes among them that you might or might not like if you tried them.
Just wanting to say I’ve really enjoyed the story so far- I’ve tried three playthroughs- Demon, Vampire, and Wendigo. I am, certainly, looking forward to more- even if there are a few areas with placeholder text at this point in time. I’m intrigued by the diverge/reconverge of your scripting; it’s going to make for an interestingly replayable game, I think, though I imagine the amount of work is rather torturous. How long has it taken you to get this far, out of curiosity?
@Shawn_Patrick_Reed
Take a look at the first post, it is from 3,5 months ago
The post title expresses that this was updated 13 days ago. But even then, what relevance does that have? I asked how long it took to get to this point on the project- total time. It’s a matter of curiosity to measure my own beginnings by.
@Shawn_Patrick_Reed
If the first post about this game was made 3,5 months ago, there is a high chance that Sashira took 3,5 months to get to this point on the project, perhaps a few weeks more, but I guess you could send her a private message to know the exact amount
This was the original post:
Hi everyone. I'm working on my first game in ChoiceScript, a supernatural urban fantasy (fantasy/realistic fiction) with some humorous elements. The working title is "Monster High". You'll be able to play one of five different monsters who are going to high school together. I've also planned a sixth monster class to be released later as an update or as download content (if this works well I could potentially add even more over time.)
I have written text adventures and done basic coding before, so it's progressing really well. I have about 50 pages written and 20 pages scripted well enough to test, and have figured out almost all of the more difficult coding (the stats screen, startup file, character creation functions, and how to make my scenes display the way I want.)
The five starting monster classes are:
* Vampire - Rich, can control people by feeding from them, some physical gifts
* Werewolf - Loyal to their pack, athletic, strong, can shapeshift
* Demon (Succubus/Incubus) - All about romance, has mind-controlled lovers who serve and protect her/him/them; can also change features
*The Misunderstood Goblin (May change species name to some similar creature) - Clever, mechanically gifted, hard to kill, natural mediator
*Wendigo - Fast, can grow sharp teeth and claws, must eat human flesh to survive
There are currently five romance options planned (one from each species you are not currently playing, plus a human - this would go up to six if a sixth class is introduced.) You will be able to select your gender (Male/Female/It's Complicated) and sexual orientation (Straight/Gay/Bi/Asexual), which would change all potential romance options to your gender of choice (or if bisexual/asexual there are defaults for each, split evenly gender-wise.) There is one major date with each (if you are pursuing them) plus plenty of other interactions. They will be altered if you are gay/bi vs. straight, how well your personality matches theirs, your relationship strength with them, etc.
There will be at least three main endings with variations. I am still designing the main "quest arc" of the game, which revolves around whether you prioritize yourself, your fellow monsters, or humans.
I'll update this as I make more progress. I expect to have this ready for play testing in two months or less. : )
As you can see, Sashira had 50 pages written when she created this thread.
(Uh… okay, I guess it might have taken much longer than 3,5 months to get here…)
@Sashira
A little help over here?
chuckles Looks like you came to see my point. Appreciate the humor, I do.
I started the game in mid-January. You could find a more exact date from the “Are you working on a game in ChoiceScript? Let us know!” thread. I posted there when I got the idea for it. It took me another week or two to show some progress, which was when I first posted here on 1/23.
Not all of that has been coding time though; I was down for a few weeks with a back injury and barely working at all, and other minor catastrophes have come up. This week it’s sick cats, though I am doing a bit of work between feline caretaking.
