Lux: City of Secrets - Book 3 of The Evertree Saga by Thom Baylay

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s thought about that! I’d love to see how all of MC’s friends & family member react to and judge the ROs. If not in this book (actually, probably not in this book), then I’m sure we’ll see MC’s hometown later on.

Incredible picture! I love your style. I’ve been trying to draw Dandy for a few days now so that I can draw a few comic strips I’ve had in mind & illustrate a few of my favorite scenes, but I can’t seem to put a face to him😕 I’ve got quite a few faces/ideas sketched out, but none of them feel quite right. I’m planning on playing the books out again and seeing if I can get any fresh inspiration. I’ll probably do that today.

Yeah, me too! im also looking forward to the meeting of family members (particularly with Daisy/Dandy)…ideally after a bit deeper in the relationship. I’ve already chibified my MCs sister (headcanoned as “Honeysuckle”), and D’s “overbearing father”, “underbearing mother”, and the kind enough grandmother who passed away. haha. I might be obsessed. (but to be fair, I play D&D with detailed characters, and write fanfic so…)

just realized I didn’t chibify D’s siblings :astonished: I’ll hafta get on that

Totally agree! I wanna meet D’s siblings who apparently would sell her/him off if they could get away with it. You know, standard sibling stuff. oh the drama :joy:

Reminds me of a fanfic I wrote on bumping Daisy’s sibling in Lux.

Summary

The guards continue to give chase down the alley, safely away from both you and Daisy. A heavy sigh of relief escapes your lips as you turn to her, “Well that could have gone better”.

Daisy gives no response as you see her attention transfixed by something else.

You follow her gaze and find yourself staring at an attractive half-elf, with long luxurious hair, her jet black strands hang by the side of her beautiful face, emphasing her high checkbones. Her supple skin shining free from any imperfections. She is dressed in a long, silver gown that perfectly contours the curves of her tall, slender body.

You would never admit it to Daisy, but she looks almost better than your lover herself.

“Fancy seeing you here. You know you have me to thank for sending the guards in the wrong direction. I mean, I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you, would I?”, the attractive lady snarks. Her grin widens as her bright blue eyes stare condescendingly into Daisy’s, baiting her. “Maybe we can have dinner like old times. That is, if the both of you are staying in this city long enough.”

“Don’t count on it”, Daisy snaps, her blue eyes boring into the stranger’s with contempt.

You’re surprised. You’ve never known Daisy to act so nonchalantly towards an attractive person before, much less someone who looks like this!

“Pity. How’s my favourite school drop out?”, she replies, never breaking her condescending gaze. “Last I heard, you were running with the big circles. I must have heard wrong”, she remarks with an arrogant smirk.

“I had a change of plans”, Daisy snaps as her eyes turn cold. You feel her grip on your arm tighten as she ushers you past the stranger.

“You know, Lux is a big city. If you’re not careful, you might just lose what you came here with.” The half-elf warns, in a unconcerned tone that almost seems threatening.

“Thanks for the tip”, Daisy says and without turning around she quickens her stride almost dragging you along.

You struggle to keep pace and only when out of earshot do you ask, “Who was that?”

“That was Dandelion”, she replies. Her body language tells you she is hesitant to talk about it.

You press the topic further, “she seemed to know you from mage school. Was she in your class?”

“Dandelion Thorne”, your half-elf adds. “She’s my sister”.

While I would love to explore more of the world map, including some of the locations mentioned as possible origins for the MC, I’m concerned that a “homecoming” scene would be too branchy to be practical, even without introducing the love interest to the MC’s family. Just the location and the surviving family member bring us up to sixteen possible branches.

I would be curious to see it, but I’m not keeping my hopes super high.

It’s not something that I find particularly likely either, especially now that you point out how branchy it is, but it’s an interesting thing to think about. There are many little headcanons that can come to mind.

Side note! (Since it just popped into my head) I just remembered that scene towards the beginning of Sordwin where Orion is pacing around his room, swearing in Elven. Do we know of any other languages within the worldbuild? Definitely hoping for more references to Elven/[other possibly existing languages] & hoping we see more of it’s usage.

Though I see how the spoken languages could be more of a hindrance unless used sparingly & in unimportant/background dialogues like how it was used in Sordwin. Maybe some references to written text in books or in inscriptions or something? Definitely hoping to see some language barriers in Lux since it’s a big city. Like, for example, some sort of side character that you have to get information from once that only speaks Elven or something… Or something as simple as a person on the street or some peddler that you try to talk to, but they only speak [language]. Just something small like that to remind us of the difference in cultures throughout the worldbuild.

Hey all!

@Inflation_Risk I love your introduction of a Daisy sibling. I have plans in my head concerning the Thorne family but it might have to wait until a later book if I’m going to do them justice!

@riverleafing Glad to see people are picking up on these little details and getting something out of them. That’s why I drop them in

@Hazel RIGHT?! I do want to do something with the hometowns in the future but it definitely won’t be in book 3. It would be a lot of potential threads so would definitely require its own book.

@Konungrinn I do love fantasy language barriers! It may come up in Lux, it may not. It will depend on the choices you make

As for all the other stuff people have said they’re looking forward to… I think I have most of it covered  I’m on Chapter 7 of 10 for the Sordwin massive edit (the end is in sight!) but in the meantime maybe I’ll post some screenshots of Lux Chapter 1 this weekend…
If I did…what would people want to see?

  • A familiar character
  • A new character
  • New ways to customise your MC
  • Your living quarters in Lux
  • Something career related
  • Pony!

@ThomB
As you’re still doing the edits for Sordwin, should I post some screenshots here of typo errors I’ve found in the last few chapters?

Please do post them on the Sordwin thread, or feel free to send them in a direct message if you want to keep them off the discussion. It’s likely I’ll find most lingering errors in this full sweep but better safe than sorry! Thanks.

Thanks for sharing that sibling meetup in Lux! a very good, fun read! …and stumbling across someone from D’s (or MC’s) past was something I expected would be a good catalyst for some… interesting development

Well before meeting the Thorne family I would first like to see Dandy’s reaction to the mc’s only family (brother in my case).

I’d really like to see or do something career related. Sure the prestige of solving mysteries is nice and useful for our reputation and Luca Imperion is a great starting point for our career (ignoring his interest in the MC). But it would be nice to see how we lay the ground work for careers other than investigator or detective. Especially since we’ve dedicated 90% of our time to solving other people’s problems and mysteries and not that much time on advancing our own career goals outside of working on improving our skill.

Thank you!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! :joy:

I’m curious, what interesting development do you think might happen? :hushed:

10 gold? is that the “cheapest place I could find” in Lux?

bonus: nose-line/birthmark inspiration. Until we get more description, here’s my Eyulf chibi :]

Everyone should pick the place with Eyulf as landlord… just saying… totally not biased in any way :sunglasses:

10 Gold??

oh, I will. He will be the landlord of at least one of my alternate-universe places my MC & Daisy live. …and then I’ll run through with Leah, possibly Oriana and the rest too!
must live all the experiences
