Jolly Good: Cakes and Ale Free-for-All Discussion Thread Where Spoilers May Appear

Hats off to a fellow custom MC namer! All of your picks roll of the tongue so well, I’m surprised they’re not featured in the game itself.

Haha, as far as I know there’s unfortunately no unique scene for this particular end combination, but I imagine the answer is, uh, chaotic. :joy: Especially since Everett went with the earl whose household inhabitants literally include three kids in a trench coat.

That’s a great system on its own though! …Plus it’s probably way more efficient if you just keep track of major paths and other significant choices. There really wasn’t any need for me to note down which free drink from Pilcrow each MC likes the most, and yet that info is there.

Oh gosh, thank you! I’m really flattered that you guys like them! I always spend too much time coming up with character names, and mostly used the already-existing ones in the game to base my ideas around.

Some rambling about naming

Like, I chose ‘Wriothesley’ because I felt it matched well with ‘Featherstonehaugh’ (in that pronouncing it phonetically means you’re pronouncing it wrong, ha), and liked Penrose for (what I see as) an amusing visual similarity to Pamplemousse. Leveson-Louison takes a page out of the Cygnet-Signet and Cowper-Cooper books of identical-sounding hyphenated surnames (with the unfortunate addition of a first name that also has a similar sound).

The reasons behind their nicknames get unnecessarily convoluted, though, so I think I’ll spare you from attempting those particular explanations  There was a lot of overthinking involved. …Except for Lewis’. That one is solely for the hilarious bit of dialogue where you can tell Buck you had nothing to do with his shipment of eels going missing, despite your brand new Noble Gas-given nickname literally being Eels.

Also, would very much love to hear about the names of your MC(s) or anyone else who’s down to share theirs :eyes:

You’re definitely more creative with your MC names than mine ! I say this since aside from nicknames I mostly used the preselected names (and I have no idea to create a good name which fits in the time frame / era ).

But without a further ado,

The names
  1. Charlotte ‘Charles’ Almondine

  2. Galahad ‘Gladdy’ Pamplemousse

  3. Verbena ‘Vé’ Bewforest

Here’s my MC names, as well as a short snippet/headcanon I have about them (Though, maybe it’s just canon, at least to me? Lines are blurry.). I like seeing other people rambling about names!

Sidney 'Siesta' Sinclair

Their nickname comes from how they were yawning as they fell from the chimney. To be honest, I picked Sinclair before I found out there are St. Clairs in the game. I enjoyed the alliteration too much to not keep.

Beau/Beatrix 'Seafood' Van der Zee

Van der Zee is just a surname I like to use for MCs in settings that fit. I do like how it’s accidentally prophetic this time, even if the sea he/she came from is really just a crateful of eels. And yeah, that nickname was picked because of Buck’s extra dialogue too!

Olivia 'Libby' Fletcher

Her American father wanted to name her Liberty but was vetoed by the British side of her family. Libby was a childhood nickname she’s happy to revive. I see her as the most casual of my MCs.

Horatio 'Santa' Montague

I wanted a name that ends with ‘o’ for my Gilberto-romancing playthrough and thought it might be fun to straight-up make him a reference to two Shakespeare plays. With apologies to Gower and/or The Bard.

Edith/Edwin 'Frills' Portendorfer

Portendorfer is just a funny word to me and makes for a funnier surname. Picked it out from an article about English surnames that were about to go extinct. Hope this means there’ll be fewer Portendorfers around to get angry at me.

is that a reference to Sunless sea / Fallen London?

Nah. I am a player of Fallen London, so I am familiar with zeefaring, but it’s a real, if rare, surname. It’s Dutch in origins.

By the by, did you hear about the romantic visual novel Failbetter’s coming out with next year? :eyes:

Thank you for the kind words!! I’m so happy you enjoy my work! Aaah!!

Hee, and I’m so happy you noticed the little tie/scarf of disaster! As per Gower’s vision: “Rory is likely dressed in perfectly fashionable clothes, thanks to their servant, but perhaps with one touch of rebelliousness–a tie or a scarf that is very not in fashion.”

This is such a wonderful style!! Ooh, I looove the pastels you dressed Rory in, and the expression on Fitzie is so good!! About inserting images directly: if I’m not mistaken, it’s a feature you’ll be able to use only after hanging and posting in the forum for a while! Welcome, by the way!! :hibiscus:

And also, woooww! All of you are so creative with your names… In all of the COGs and HGs I play, I’ll honestly just type in my real name… I… I like self-inserting, I guess. Haha!

Yes, I did :eyes:. Apparently one of the trailers showed a master … I don’t know what it’s implying but let’s just say I’m :eyes:

Anyways I’m surprised there Fallen London players here  :hugs:

It’s okay :ok_hand:t2: . That’s totally a fine way to play. Heck, sometimes I’d play self-inserts too. (Just with a different name ). In fact C&A is the first time I’m role playing as someone else and let me just say it’s pretty fun !

Aw, I love those!! Gladdy in particular is such a cute nickname for Galahad  I’ve actually misread the name Galahad as ‘glad hand’ so many times in the past, so Gladdy just feels super intuitive. (Now that I think about it, Gladhand could make a fun nickname for a Galahad who has high Persuade…)

Funnily enough, I got Edevane from a similar list! Not to mention, Edith/Edwin’s initials are E. P. while Penrose’s are P. E.; this plus their nearly-extinct surnames means they are now friends in my head. Sorry, them’s the rules. I’m pretty much in love with how fun Sidney ‘Siesta’ Sinclair is to say, too.

Also an excellent way to play! Live your semi-alternate reality 1930s dreams! The only reason I personally never self-insert is because I much prefer not being me for a little while every now and then, haha.

If I was a better fic writer I would absolutely want to draft up a scenario where everyone’s MCs are just hanging out in the Noble Gases clubhouse :joy: As it is, I think I’ll just pleasantly daydream about it for a minute.

Hah, no qualms about that! I mean, unless Penrose was also interested in Fitzie. Then again, they can talk about how dumb they are to fall for their servants.

Aww, you think so. I’m so happy !!

Ahahaha… thanks . I figured that while in the Arthurian myths Galahad is this pure and perfect person who can do no wrong I decided to somewhat invert it with my MC here . He’s very flashy, a total pretty boy, enjoys praises yet no matter how much he messes around he’s a reliable person, which makes it very infuriating for people who try their best at doing something but constantly fails at it.

That describes him very well .

Ooh yes  though when I saw that name it seems to fit a kind-hearted MC who gladly gives everything to those in need and every item they give ranges in usefulness. Like, they can either give you a sock or a huge hint in a crime scene.

To add more fun, why not make a character with the nickname Glovehands to rivals Gloves

That sounds so FUN ! But, if everyone’s MC is in the clubhouse wouldn’t it make it too cramped . Personally, I’d have everyone outside competing in the club games instead. We get to see everyone react in random scenarios WITHOUT setting the clubhouse on fire

Behold, in all of its glory, the wonders that @Shyranno has created!

I asked them all to attend this photo session for your delectation. Some were more than pleased to pose; some did so grudgingly; some insisted that this photo did not capture their best side; others desired to have a replica of their photo enlarged and placed on their night table. It was a lovely night, though. We all mingled, quaffed beverages, and chit-chatted about adventures past.

And so the real question is, how many can you identify correctly, and can you find a) the characters you have heard of but have not seen before, and b) the single new character you have never before seen or heard of, but whom you will meet in Tea and Scones?

Is that Starling at the bottom??? :eyes: Sir/Madam i am looking respectfully

Quite right–bottom row, nos. 5 and 6 are the Starlings. And your respectful look is noted by Starling.

It’s late here, so I’ll be making my guesses in the morning. But Pilcrow! Feathers and their crew!! Trina and Shambles!!! They’re my favourites!

@Shyranno you did a great job bringing all of them to life!

I’m sorry, I’ll try to admire the others in a minute but STARLING!!!

They look scary as hell. And I love it. They are SUPER intimidating, woah. I got it wrong, not blond at all! BUT I’M DIGGING THIS LOOK. Gorgeous. I was already in love, but now I can put a face to the character and damn, I’m falling deeper. They look so… commanding, god :face_with_thermometer::face_with_thermometer:

Fitzie already does whatever he wants with my MC and he’s FITZIE. If Starling gives her that look, my poor Charlotte will really become “a well-trained puppy”, like Fitzie says.
